Lineage 3 not using Unreal 3 engine, brand new start

GameloadingGameloading Member UncommonPosts: 14,182

"

NC Soft representative Kim said, "It is true, I was shocked when we had to stop the development of Lineage 3 in May; However, we are going to start all over on January, 2008. We are going to put all of our online gaming technology we've earned through the past ten years into this project." He then stated, they will NOT be using the Unreal 3 Engine, but creating their own.

The Lineage 3 Project will begin next year January 1st, and will be announced to the public in 2011."

I expect this game to have a horrid grind, but if they can at least tone down the death penalty for going red, I'll give it a try.

IT's going to suck like the other's too :S I've never played one good Asian mmorpg cause they don't care about character customization or story etc etc. All Asains care about is long grinds and ditem drops from boss mobs and being the best in PVP which doesn't = skill but how much time you play.

Hopefully this will mean that L3 will be the next big step MMO's will taking. Hopefully NCSOFT has learnt from L2's short comings. I hope this game takes MMO's to the next level.

will be interesting to see how this new engine of theirs compares to the unreal 3 engine.

Thank gods, Unreal sucks and it's starting to be shown in the Industry as many companies ditch highly anticipated projects off that engine for their own technology.

Assassin's Creed, Lineage 3, Too Human... and those are just the ones that made it public they did not want to use that engine anymore.

PFFT.. they should get the Crysis engine, but then again they'd shame the godly best engine out there by their POS gameplay. God awful grinds.. come on now.. get with it already.. people don't wanna sit around and grind for a bagillion years... I'd play L2 if it wasn't for the grind.. that's the single reason I won't.. and they wonder why people bot.. WELL JEE YA THINK IT COULD BE FROM THE GRIND? derrrrr...

Hell if I played L2 i'd set up my G15 keyboard to play the dern game for me 24/7 in the background on a seperate computer then play Two Worlds or Stalker on my good PC, but wtf would be the point of that...

    First things first....

MMO's have always had some form of grind some just do a better job of masking it ok?

I'm glad NC Soft is going ahead with their plans to release Lineage III. Perhaps this setback will prove usefull.  AION & Spellborn will suffice till L3's release.

Take you're time and rock it guys...

The source code has been free to everyone out there so i believe there staff weighed there options to steal/mimmick/borrow coding ideas over paying outright for a liscense fee. This just means they have to use older tech ,still not that inferior on any other games they develope,at least until they have there own engine up and running. They coulda bought unlimited use package or several single lscenses,as to wich they must have figured would be of higher cost over the said 4 yrs to build there own.Just like the creative labs vs AUREAL fiascal,i doubt even epic as large as they are would ever follow up 4yrs from now on any liscensee infrgements against another giant like NCSOFT.I would bet ncsoft could almost 75% copy the unreal engine and nothing would be done about it.

There is deffinately a reason for this change and it's almost ALWAYS about cost, and given the fact they have access to the source code,i am sure they weighed cost as there main decision. For anyone that actually believe's in the theory they could build a better engine, remeber that in 4yrs from now ,so will everyone else have superior engines. This is why paying a liscense fee to the company who beats you to the punch is a much smarter idea IMO anyhow.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Of course every mmo has some sort of "grind" but theres a difference in reaching only level 60(which isn't the level cap) within 8 months on L2 and finally being able to participate in the game's "content" (lol) as opposed to hitting the level cap in say WoW, EQ2, or LOTRO casually within 6 to 8 weeks.

Don't worry. The Earth won't end until 2012. That should give you a solid year of L3. . . Unless this mmorpg has a production delay. But that never happens does it *cough*

I see you're point DA however I think we've enough 5 minute MMO's on the market already. I imagine you've been around the block MMO wise so you remember earlier titles like UO, EQI etc required an investment of time before reaping rewards.

Don't get me wrong the only MMO I currently subscribe to is the fast food variety (CoX). That being said I don't want every MMO released to follow that trend. I believe there's still a place for MMO's that require some real time investment in order to fully develop a character.

Ok let's test this logic of yours.

Perfect World vs World of Warcraft.

What's the point of hitting the level cap so fast? Even though there might a whole bunch of quests you can still do when you're capped, there'd be no motivation to it because it would no longer be benefiting your character. L2 got the grind right imo.

I agree that Lineage 2 has the grind right on, but it is way too tedious. Grinding can be made to be much more fun than killing 10000 mobs for 1 level while farming for gold and then using up time setting up a player shop upon the thousands already in town.

I thought the player shops in L2 were pretty innovative and was something different compared to most other games which use a auction house/broker kind of market. Though right now, I'd much prefer to leave my PC off if I could :P

Wow and I thought waiting for BioWare's 2009 MMO was bad enough.. 2011, ouch.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

In a PVE game you'd have a point but this is supposed to be a PVP game. People don't want to grind out on PVE mobs just to be able to PvP in 1-2 years. It's freaking insane for a PVP game to be this way. Hell at least in EVE you can be up and running doing full on pvp in 3-6 months.

This is why L2 is so freaking infested with bots. Everyone bots because it's complete whore of a grindfest that only a nerd with no life, someone suffering from OCD or someone with access to botting software would put up with period.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

4 years is a good estimate on development of a Great MMORPG with a company the size of NCSoft.

You're wrong about Asian Games having lack of customization.  Its Asian games that are now pushing end-game visuals.  Sure in some western games you have 50 different facial sliders.  But who cares how thick you made your eyebrows when you are wearing the same clothes as all the other level 60 fighters?  This is were Asian games really excel at.  They have tons of end-game and game progression clothing now.  Especially with the cash shop model, you need stuff to stick onto the shop that won't affect gameplay and its usually visual effects.

There are only a handful of games without grind and its not really an east vs west difference.
