What is the BEST free MMO out there?

What is the BEST free MMO out there? What does it offer that makes it the best?
I'm really looking to get into a new MMO. I have tried everything out there New Release wise. Never tried any of the Free ones.
Or If there is just a cheap one that flew under the Radar, Reccomend that. Can;t go by MMORPG Ratings since EVERYTHING is a 7.2!
So If you could all reccomend some to me , I would appreciate it.
Things I'm looking for in my New MMO:
1) A High Populations ~ I like to play with lots of other people in the game world.
2) New Player Friendly ~ Either has a ton of new players or existing players are always looking for new Playrs to join their "Flock"
2) Some sort of Housing/Player Cities would be nice.
3) Nothing "Japanesey" ~ I'm ok with a Japanese game, but the ones that are really heavy into it I don't like.

EVE online? That's all I got.
1) There's only one server and there's usually 20,000+ people on at one tiem.
2) There's a large corp called "EVE University" that teaches new players the basics. There are also some small jobs new players can do in the bigger PvP corps.
3) Not much. Corps and Alliances can build their own space stations when they take over a system.
4) It's space.
Edit: Oops, I can't read. EVE isn't free.
right now i'm playing perfect world on the chinese servers, it's a decent game but meets none of your requirements.

1) No high population "free" games come to mind, of course i consider high to be 500,000+ actives (L2,WoW etc)
2) New player friendly? Are you kiding the only noob friendly games are like LOTR, maybe guild wars and WoW somewhat.
3) Housing - DAOC has a nice housing system , but if it must be free try shadowbane. Keeping mind all of shadowbane's servers are pacrlm zergfests now, besides mourning thats just a cheater / dupe FC gear/stats server.
4) Japanese game ? Wouldn't know i don't play PAC-realm games for obvious reasons (they suck), not to mention western and eastern players tend to not get "along". Thats not even mentioning the language barrier.
Anarchy Online. The basic game is free to play, meaning you get the FULL game that was originally released and the PvP add-on pack and all the updates to the game ever since. What you don't get is the 3 official Expansion Packs. You can DEFINITELY play without them. The game went 2 years before any of those expacs came out, so you've got that much content to play with and it's a TON.
I recently went back and found the main cities full and robust, tons of people of all levels. Tons of Froobs (free account players). You get a player apartment but it's really not much to write home about. There are player cities in the game, but you cannot build one without one of the expansions. You can however participate in defending those cities if your guild has one. There is also something called "towers" which is a type of pvp land control, you have FULL access to this with your free acct.
AO is an amazing game, just graphics are a tad dated due to being old.
I highly recommend it.

When I played I didn't see a single soul. And I hear if you don't have the expansions you can't be competetive in pvp cause the exp adds new levels and other various things to enhance your character further.
There are ALOT of F2P MMOs to try out there. I personally have tried a very good majority of them but your not going to find what your looking in any F2P game. Things like player housing are unheard of in F2P games, currently DaoC and Eq2 come to mind, both p2p and LOTRO has instanced neiborhoods in the works
As far as f2p with good populations, thats a bit easier to find. What are you interested in though? pve,pvp rvr?
When Rappelz was in Open Beta I really liked it, just a fun game and a nice change between the p2p ones I subscribe to. Regnum has RvR if your more interested in that, and for pve im yet to find much of anything worth playing. RYL and RYL2 are both free to play.. Silkroad and KO... I could name a hundred, but it all depends on what your looking for.. but don't expect p2p quality in a f2p game, I looked for a long long time, just doesn't exist. you could try GWs, but its already launched 3 games which still have to be purchased.
try out Arch Lord, you can get your free key right from this site.
Your assuming the OP doesn't mind the genre, I personally cannot stand SCIFI.. so AO, is bottom of my list

Im more of a tradional fantasy guy myself, but AO definetly has earned its dues, alot better as a p2p though, from what I hear

That list is heavily outdated. Last time it was updated was in September 2005. That's 2 years ago.

lol good luck bro there is no free game that fits what your looking for you are being to picky for free stuff. Like a bum asking if he can have a nice juicy steak and eggs when someone is offering him a sloppy joe from school cafeteria the bum hasn't ate anything besides garbage for months and he is gonna be picky about some real food. Your that bum.
I am going to have to agree on AO. Best free game out there for sure. Ppl are very helpful in the noob channels and they revamped the starter areas which helped a lot to give you a better understanding of the initial game. It is a quite a challenge to understand the depth of the game.
I'm not sure how packed the cities are anymore since there are so many expansions, new zones, player housing and towns ppl tend to move around but for the free accounts they would be in the main cities. Basically you have to be patient with it because the interface is a bit overwhelming at first as well as stated the graphics are dated. Play it an hour or so.. let it sink in a bit then go back to it later or another day etc.. it will grow on you.

Shadowbane is your best bet.
Guild WARs also you have to buy the game off the bat but after that its free to play. (no subscription)

I would vote Guild Wars the best, who cares about the 50$ or whatever it is, go buy it
just a one time thing...
Also you may want to try Archlord now that its 100% free!
shadowbane fits your requirements, but it has terrible pve. pvp is good though.

lots of free mmorpgs out there, but you have to understant that all of t hem need some sort of incomes to run the servers and internet connections, so they will always find ways to force you to buy ingame stuffs with real money.
the way I see f2p mmorpgs out there is, you can play the games for free, but in order to enjoy the game or compete with others, you will need to pay. I guess that will take away the fun factor you are looking for.
currently there are a few mmo out there that are free to play and sorttt of without catches, you could check them out
1. shadowbane (not a really high pop game, don't play this game if you don't like to pvp, since it's a ffa game so everyone can gank on you, and there WILL always be peopole hidding in town to gank you when you train... it's quite fun if you are into pvp tho)
2. ao is not really bad
3. guild wars is.... sort ..... of free, but you will need to b uy a lot of expansions, and expansion usually comes out every 4-6 months, so it's just like paying a monthly fee -.- it's fun tho since the lead developer was the one who design WoW
4. those "wink" servers out there that you can play RO or L2 .
5. Shattered galaxy is reallly fun as a mmosrpg. it's like warcraft 3 but can play with hundreds of people at the same time. you should tried this game.
can't really think of others....if you aren't picky it should be easy enough to find tons of decent free mmorpg out there tho, personally i would recommend fly for somehting o nline where you can fly on a broom or some thingy... it's not a bad game, just a bit linear and takes a long time to level up
If one were so inclined, there are many more games than that.
