Question:  Can you de-mast your target?  If so there is your solution to slow combat....Does the game engine take into concideration round shot, double shot, canister, or chain shot?  What about splinters the size of your arm?

Personal combat...can I kick them in the balls?  Poke the hilt of my sword into their eyes?  Call their mother a two bit whore and then prove it?

What about fire?  Wooden ships burn...

Sombody said they did good for duplication of  that era, just how good did they do?

We have Heavy Round, Bronze Round (does more damage), Stone Round (does less damage, but cheap), Star Shot, Bar Shot, Chain Shot, Canister Shot, and Grape Shot.   Rounds do mostly hull damage with some mast and crew, Star, Bar, and Chain do mostly mast/rigging damage with some hull and crew, and Canister and Grape do mostly crew.  All have different ranges of effectiveness.  Oh, and there are swivel canons too, with a large angle of fire but a short range, for when you are preparing to board.

We don't have kicking them in the balls, but the Dirty Fighting school of combat includes elbows to the nose, foot stomps, slashing low to affect their mobility, etc.  Fencing is more the elegant Epee type of swordplay, and Florentine is two handed with a sword in one hand and  a dagger/shortsword in the other.   You can also have an offhand pistol, but that's really only useful as an opener as reload times were long.  We have plans to add a "hook" school of fighting for if you have a hook on one hand, but haven't gotten that in yet (and won't before release).

We don't currently have burning ships and flaming shot.  On the idea list, but a lot of extra work.

We also don't have scurvy :)  There's a limit to how accurate we *want* to be.

I had a chance to play the beta. I wasn't impressed to be honest. IMO this game will biff once it comes out in a few short months. The control of the ships is decent, but the combat system is like Sid Meyers pirates on stereoids. And we all know how sid meyers pirates played.... But again thats just my opinion. I've like games that everyone else has hated b4, so I'm sure this will appeal to a base of players.

VC has ramming and greek fire throwers, with point-and-click maneuvering.

PotBS only has cannons, but with location specific armor (front, back, left, right) with keyboard maneuvering.

Aside from that, they look like they'll be pretty similar to me.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

You just need ta wait till the game is fully released... I still don't know everything about the gameplay on this game... still trying to figure it out... But overall i really hope this is a good game.. I also would like to know how big the world is and slow combat.. im fine with that..

But how the game fully works.. I would like to know that... and hopefully it comes out soon enough... Im all for patience but takeing forever .. just ain't my thing... but i'm sure that the designers are doing fine right now... They're doing awesome so far.. i've not tested the game but i can asume that a game like this will sucseed.

I just wanted to say tat Hattrix obviously hasn't got a clue about any MMORPG except for this one, He said Aion was just another fantasy MMO based on L2 and thats not true in fact it has no grinding quests and you can fly and It's not an MMOG like wow or L2 its an MMORPG you CAN actually affect the game server and it's far more better than he thinks! sorry, but he needs to get information!

Since PotBS takes a step away from a lot of the mmorpgs we see today, I think theres definitely going to be an adjustment period which includes getting used to the combat pace.    It worries me a little, but I feel like most interested gamers will have the patience and commitment to adjust.    It might even make for a more mature community.

I also enjoy more strategic thinking and a little less twichy gameplay, the slow but graphicly stimulating ship combat is what I was hopeing for.

  • juv95hrnjuv95hrn Member UncommonPosts: 12

Well we all have different taste. Personally I long for slower, more strategic playing with tactical choices where skill (hopefully) is more important than uber-gear and grind time. Skill based avatar combat and skill based ship combat, what more can you ask for? Also the graphics look excellent if you ask me. Participating in a PvP 25 ship harbour competition battle with previous guild strategy talks sound like a wet dream for me. I have read a lot about Napoleonic (a bit later I know but still very similar) Naval warfare and this seems to go a long bit towards simulating this. Add player controlled economy to this and It's by far the most promising game out there. If I could pay extra to keep any bunnyhoping, leet, kids that write "lol" etc out of the game everything would be perfect. I expect most of the unpleasant elements of other games will not enjoy this game and I so look forward to not playing with them.

Eagerly looking forward to open beta/release!

I read somewhere a while ago, that the 25vs25 port battles will be fought by randomly picked people, not by whole guilds/societies. Not sure if this is still correct, but it would be a realm>guild decision.

It's random from the pool of folks who have contention points. The more points you have, the better chance you have to get in. I'm not a giant fan of it, but an organized guild who works together to gain unrest up the wazoo will fill a majority of the spots.

Maybe that's why you sucked at WoW? Who in the heck wants a slow paced game? Slow minded people? I don't get it.

I will wait until I see more to judge the game... the trailer and screenshots I have seen have changed my mind.

not really, i would say they've put too much of an arcade spin on the sailing to keep peoples interest.  enough of it in fact that I've lost interest in it.

We haven't kept things *that* accurate.  As youll find from reading threads where people who want strict realism have complained about it, travel times on the open sea are significantly speeded up compared to reality.  We tried realistic sailing times, and frankly it sucked.  In ship combat, though, sailing is more realistic.  However once you've got a few skills to choose from under your belt, there's plenty to do.  As Isildur has posted, it can be hard to keep up with all the things you need to do, let alone all the things you could be doing.  Sure, it's not going to be as fast paced as an FPS, but that's the reality of ship combat.  If you want an FPS, our game won't be for you, even if there isn't any grass growing.  On the other hand, there are a lot of people who don't want a game to be twitch based.  They want a game where strategy and tactics overcome blinding reflexes.   For them, our game may be more appealing.  May not be for you, or for everyone, but that's why there is room for more than just one game in the industry.  And for more than one opinion about what makes a good game.  I hope you check it out and give it a try (the avatar combat may be more your speed), but if not I'm sure you'll find an MMO out there that's more to your liking.

I love how so many people have access to the internet yet none of them want to do research on the games they are looking at.

    dear Rick:

The ship combat from what (admittedly little) I've seen; reminds me of a modernized "privateers" - which i mean as a compliment.

The hand-to-hand combat looks; if nothing else; innovative - the idea that SOMETHING is happening in combat other than the old MMO staple of just exchanging blows until someone runs out of hit points.  The balance mechanic looks like an interesting way to represent other factors.

(  I was actually directed to PotBS because of my blog on boring; same-ol combat im mmo's)

maybe some of the other games will take a hint; as heavily as they rely on combat; and make combat at least somehow related to swordsmanship and skill rather than hit-points/ dps contests.

Thank you for trying something innovative.

Some people might not like it, but I didnt mind.

    Slow combat!

    Finally

As I see new trend in MMOs is fast actionlike combat , which makes no sense to me - as RPG gamer i am interested in tactics over action.

So slower combat with much more focus on tactics - sounds like dream to me

And as for avatar combat - I am glad to hear its good !

VERY well said! I always prefer tactics over a mindless clickfest.
