Are we still excited

majochmajoch Member Posts: 599

Who all here is still avidly looking forward to this title, or is some of the sparkle beginning to fade a bit?

I will put myself somewhere in between at the moment.  Patience is a virtue I should invest a little more in.

Well, what else is there to be excited about? As much as I love Funcom, I'm a bit wary about how AoC will be at release. There is WAR, which I am keeping an eye on because it is Mythic + Games Workshop. I play Games Workshop games, I have a WH40k Witchhunter Army and a WHF Ork army and I love their lore. However, WAR will be completely PvP and could get tiresome after a short time, especially if I have games like Unreal Tournament 3 and Team Fortress 2 to keep my competitive nature in check.

I like my PvP, but I also like my RP, and right now Hero's Journey looks like the best game coming out for RP'ers. Until it is released I will probably be sticking to CoH/CoV, which I have just gotten into.

I'm with Solrek on this.  There just aren't many games that support role play.  Maybe Age of Conan and Chronicles of Spellborn would be nice, but AoC never struck me as female friendly and I've never reacted well to decapitations..  Spellborn's character art style..  makes me a little sick somehow.  A little twisted.  Good style, just not good for me.

I have the highest expectations for HJ out of any other games...

Next would be Aion, with the potential of some features I really like (in particular, I'm talking more about the changing environments, introduction of new materials, monsters, etc. as players kill monsters, mine minerals, etc.... the idea of world progression) ... Even though, it doesn't sound like they're going to get those features to be as good as I'd hope...

TCOS has some interesting concept and AI... But the combat doesn't look very appealing to a spectator, even though it might be fun to play... (They haven't released anything on how quests works or how the game "really" plays like...)

I'm still interested, but I'm trying not to set my expectations too high to avoid being disappointed. As for avid excitement.... I think I'll save that for when the game gets a little closer to completion so I don't get burned out.

hopeful, but not holding my breathe. If it comes out I'll give it a shot. But I've been waiting too long with too little info for HJ to be at the top of my wish-list anymore.

Ever since the removal of Suwari, and the almost total lack of any new info for the past year or so, I'm firmly in the "Meh..." camp. If I get Spellborn later this year, I'll be there for a few years, and I don't play more than one MMO at a time. So unless CoS is pretty bad, HJ won't be seeing me sign up for a while, if ever.

I was extremely excited for awhile. I braved those play.net forums which tried their very best to repel me, contributed to discussions, posted a number of times on these boards, read every detail on the unofficial FAQ site, and....well, I'm looking forward to Chronicles of Spellborn now. That's not because it sounds like it's going to have significantly more going for it than Hero's Journey, but because it does have a similar level of avatar customization from what I've read (as well as a similar approach to it), and it seems much more likely to be released. Nothing's ever certain, but Hero's Journey has really gone dark since Melissa Myers left. Without information and visible progress, it's extraordinarily difficult to keep up that "oh boy!" attitude.

I may still try Hero's Journey if it releases, but I'll need to be unhappy with whatever game it is I'm playing at the time in order to switch, and tiered pricing is a definite deal-breaker for me. So, I guess we'll see. I really like the idea of the dynamic quests (Journey system) and the incredible avatar options, but the luster has already begun to fade from the rest of it for me. Honestly, I'm not even all that sure about Spellborn; I've reached a state of "fantasy fatigue" that seems to be a more persistent condition than I thought it would be. Right now, the biggest point of light for me on the horizon is the White Wolf/CCP World of Darkness game, but we know literally nothing about that aside from the general theme, so there's no telling if it'll be what I'm hoping it'll be.

I do definitely hope that this game launches, and launches well. Every well-made game that enters the marketplace raises the level to which its peers must also rise in order to compete, and that's usually a very good thing for consumers.

Just want to add, that if EA Mythic does WAR and RvR right, people that never would consider roleplaying, will automatically role play. Think about Realm Pride, Defending the realm against enemy invaders, ...
For example, you are minding your own business, but suddenly some important POI is under siege, so everyone in the guild and alliance is like, help we under attack, call to arms, lets go defend.
It is sortoff a natural RP experience where you dont have to "try" to roleplay, you just get sucked in.

Also true RvR is really something different then UT2004 or whatnot, even tho I like to play UT2004 once in a while :p

Anyone who is used to waiting on Blizzard to put out games shouldn't have any problem waiting for this one.

    I'm still eagerly awaiting it.

I was very excited about HJ when it was first announced back in ermm.. like '98?  Then I got excited again at Simucon 2000 and 2001 when the CEO of Simutronics announced "you will be playing this game this year".  Now it's 2007 and the game seemingly has not progressed much past high expectations and fantastic graphics.  I'm not excited anymore.  HJ = Vaporware.

  • SolrekSolrek Member Posts: 63

HJ is not vaporware, some of us invest many hours a week into its development. I think it is worth pointing out a few things that are public knowledge. Simutronics had to make a completely new engine to support the features they want in their game. During this process they got a lot of interest from licensees, which means they had to expand. The current version of HJ is a second iteration, the game that was announced initially was dropped. Simutronics is a privately held indie developer, which means they do not have publisher milestones, marketing bullet points, and stockholders to contend with. Simutronics, unlike many new and past MMO developers out there, has a proven track record.

When I started in the game industry at Maxis, a little prior to when EA bought them, I got a chance to work in an indie company and saw the same things being said about us by our fans. SimCity 3000 (scrapped and rebuilt) and The Sims (7 years of dev)  were taking too long to develop, would be flops, etc. Having experienced working for EA afterwards, I can say that it is very different. Many people are comparing HJ's development to how big publishers like Microsoft (AoC) and EA (WAR) are doing things, but in a small company development gives way to passion, not stock-holder expectations.

True you dont have stockholders breathing down your neck but you have a player base who cares, who is inquisitive and want to know. Sure we owe you nothing at this point but there's something to be said to keep your potential player base and such aware of devlopments.

Not at all, this game will have  loyal player base regardless...

I will not be excited until I can get a handle on a release year. Somewhat like getting excited about playing games on a holodeck- might as well be excited about something that is in reach. :D

I've been following this game for at least 4 years. I guess I would say I'm still looking forward to it...but developer spin aside, "we have passion for our game" is great for them. I'm glad they are passionate about their work. It doesn't really tell us much more than "we'll release it someday when it's ready." Citing other successful games and stating "those had a 5-10 year release cycle" also tells me nothing about THIS game. Technically, I don't have a problem with that, I can't imagine the amount of work that would have to go into developing a title like this. But am I still excited about it? I can't afford to be excited about it because we don't have a release decade yet much less a release year. Sooo...maybe I'm a future big fan of HJ, but as of this year, there's really nothing else to say about the game that hasn't been said. Excitement? On hold...for now.

I'm excited about the game. But that doesn't mean much because i just stumbled on the game within the last month. It looks like this game could have alot of potential. But I'm not holding my breath.  I was excited about GnH and look what happened there. Oh well excitement never hurt anyone or did it hmmm...

Try to keep in mind that lack of response or regular updates does not necessarily denote lack of production.  Quite the opposite, usually.  Game development is always very hush-hush, this is just tradition.  But long periods of silence should be interpreted more as "they're in progress of meeting a milestone" not so much "Oh they quit and don't care about us."

We're working on it... our priority is to finish the game so people can play it, not tease them endlessly with little updates.

Personally I'm Very excited... I can't wait for this game..!

I do wish, as many others thought, that some more information were available and foremost at a more regular basis - however, no information probably means they're working on the game and focus on that.

in my opinion, even though it's put as 2007, I wouldn't think it to be released until 2008/2009.. probably mid 2008. Speculation though, of course, and as many say we don't have That much info.

I was pretty thrilled about HJ when is was announced at Simucon '99 and again at simucons '01-'04. Now that they are making money from liscensing the HJ game engine I am wondering if they will ever release their own game and whether their will be any room left in the market.

Read one of the monthy newsletters for Warhammer Online and tell me again how a game can't advance in production and keep people informed at the same time. They release more info in one month than HJ ever has. But then, that game is actually going to see the shelves, so they have things to write about.
