Heres how it its been:
Eq2: lvl 25 Berzerker
The Good:
-its not wow, I hate to go with the grain
-I hear it has good crafting
-harsh pvp penalites
-ganking
-you can grind if you want, dont have to quest
-If a game forces me to be a rogue or die in pvp, this is the one with the best rogues
-game has a pretty solid pace in my experience, no need to farm for money etc...good flow to things....
-good combat speed
The bad:
-unless you are willing to revolve your rl schedule around/be accountable in any way besides moderate fees to your guild and twink, pvp is one sided against you, unless...
-you play as a hated rogue type...they are pwnage in pvp over anyone(as expected in a ganking mmo, but not to this extent!). Got annoying getting ganked by ppl 3 levels under me though and only hitting them once.
-To the best of my knowledge, no charge ability to lvl 25.
-long travel times for quests
-dont remember ever getting decent gear drops or being rich enough to buy even 1 item of decent gear, and ive lvled 3 toons to 20. I hate gear but it makes grinding more tolerable/economical
-game is sooo lvl-based its sickening(except for rogues, they always win )
-lore/setting/graphicals style is a convoluted abomination
Why I keep leaving- not able to defend self in pvp even in seemingly favorable encounters(we're talking about lvl 15's-me- vs lvl 12-them- rogues ok, its not like theres much skill involved at that lvl even though I suck... irritating quests
Why I keep coming back- its like wow without being wow.... man those pvp kills are satisfying
Wow: lvl 18 warrior
The Good:
-RL friends play
-Love the undead lands, music.
-crafting is easy, relaxing. WOW made it accessible.
-combat system is best ive seen in the mmo's ive liked besides swg
-no worries about population
The bad:
-silverpine forest is irritating though impressive, forced into dull barrens (even has a crossroads, wc, and long, forgettable terrain just like eq2, its a total ripoff)
-impossible to craft items/armor with first toon because craft recipes require un-affordable purchases at auction house, even if main ingredients can be achieved through other profession
-soo loot based, its all anyone talks about. The game is diablo2 on steroids, minus what made d2 great-dynamic fighting
-lvling is not as fast as I was lead to believe...quests are just as convoluted as eq2, just as much pointless running
-seems like grinding is a waste, you have to do quests, some of which are good, but for most, see eq2
-terrible drop %'s for quest items often
-game promotes grinding....grinding another alt....grinding tradeskills...grinding rep...grinding pvp....raiding...if you do what the fanbois tell you and just "smell the roses" and pretend like the game will take care of you if you do what the game on its face requires, you will be a nothing in the game...people will ridicule you...you will not be able to afford lowly npc armor sets...I had a weapon, npc bought, which did the same damage as any weapon my lvl can use w/o stat upgrades- meaningless things-and someone actually gave me gold to buy a new one because he was so "embarrassed" for me
why I left: used to leave because of gfx, just starting playing seriously but inexplicably getting bored. Please, convince me to stay.
why I come back: actually, why I keep trying...rl friends play it, no paranoia about population issues
Daoc: lvl 35 Heretic
the good:
-favorite mmo overall
-solid pve
-great pvp
-the best lore
-has my fav quest ever in it (legacy)
-not too gear based
-its war, baby!
-Heretic class is the best mmo class ever.
-spell fx
the bad:
-no one makes use of good pve, all they do is grind solo-this includes solo quest grinding
-no one will help me with legacy...had a blast on the soloable part though
-game seems more like counterstrike than an mmo with the rvr obsession...ruins immersion just like gear obsession in WOW does
-population is fine...for now
-rvr is overrated although still great...its like a giant resettable wow bg in practice...its not like any side actually does things that can be percieved as winning or at least dominance, its a never-ending stalemate back and forth
-Ive heard there's crafting, but never seen anything resembling it at my lvl
-melee combat BLOWS
-repetitive landscapes
-top-heavy game...even on classic
why I left- no faith in rvr to still be rvr by the time I ding 50...I need zergs
why I keep coming back- the lure of rvr, the awesome setting/music/spell effects, my awesome toon, the fact that its so underrated...
SWG: lvl 20 commando
the good:
-combat
-guns
-scifi
-star wars
-spaceships
-its soe, and I love supporting them to piss everyone off
-legacy quest
-best quest dialog of 4 games
-still some semblance of a population left on bria
-noobs like me might get lucky in pvp now that the game is less item/buff based and more random/psychotic in its damage dealing
-crafting dead? who cares, the combat will keep me occupied/well funded!
the bad:
-even in-game population wont stfu about how dead the game is...i know you got screwed but other games suck and this shell of a game is better than they are
-the game is ipso-facto dead because of the pore-clogging vets refusing to let new players through
-i hear quests get scarce
-I think anyone who talks about pvp in space these days is on the soe payroll...ive been playing on an off for 2 years and have never seen it ever
why I left: no lvl 20-60 pupulation, totally top and bottom heavy...if they had more entertaining quests id be happy. space combat was depressing...fun but so much unrealized potential. dont want to put time into a game with no future, just like daoc...
why i come back: game might have no future, all the more reason to get what i can out of it now...(same w/ DAOC)
So what the hell is wrong with me? Why cant I stick with one game? What am I really looking for? Whichgame should I just suck it up and stick with?
plz dont say "play other genre's", Ive been playing every pc game genre under the sun since Commander keen and still do in conjunction with mmos.

Quit them all for 6 months, go pick up a copy of nwn2 or something.
When the new batch of games comes out, play one of those and burn your old games so you don't go back to them.
That should do it.
D.
lol thanks.
I would never play an auto-attack single player rpg like nwn though, Ive suffered through enough of than in mmos. Even turn based is better.

That's why you hack it. It's easy to find the dev concole controls. Kinda fun to mix your characters up, give them abilities from other classes, etc.
I probably spend more time creating characters for nwn2 than I do actually playing it...I've never gotten past chapter 2 yet, I keep playing with the character generator, lol.
D.
You never played the game that started all the mmo's ? : )
I went back to everquest after 5 years , but it does take alot to learn the game.
allakhazam.com helps alot for spells and loots.
It was and still is the only true fantasy mmo out there. I enjoy it and i will until something better comes out.
If you like quests the ones on eq are actually interesting. If your like me and like to kill and adventure than Everquest is for you.
It is complicated but not too bad, Just alot of spells and places and items . 16classes that all are awesome. Stick to the old zones and it's much fun. Maybe not graphically the best , but neither is pac-man.
lates yo : ) wow got boring after 1.5 years everquest took 3.5.
I like your points on most the games. And yeah with wow's succes there will be a million new mmo's in the next few years!

YES I had the same problem w/ nwn 1. TOO many options, I was never happy with the one I chose. The gameplay of course hardly made me excited to get down to business, though.
NWN 2 is one of those games I will someday buy but never play for more than an hour total.

I'm in the same boat as you.. lol
I've finally quit DAoC for good. It was great to me for a few years, but it's time to let it go.
I'm currently subscribed to EQ2(lvl 22 Bruiser), and I enjoy it a lot. I too have a hard time finding good gear because nothing drops or everything is too expensive that players sell. EQ2s population could use some help it seems. Well, the majority of the population is probably just at the end game areas. I rarely see anyone hunting where I am. There's always something to do in EQ2. There's tons of quests, if not too many haha.
Today I just re-activated my WoW account. I keep coming back to this every now and then. I have a 38 Priest, but I'm thinking of rolling a Warrior instead.
I seem to have trouble sticking with just one ever since I left DAoC.
Looking for something new.
thanks, I did try an eq demo once, maybe I'll try again.

I kinda get the impression that some people feel as if they HAVE to play MMOs. I know, I know - you dont want any suggestions about other genres, but maybe, just maybe, you should try something totally different. Computer games are just games and if you find that you cant stick to a game, maybe its because you have reached a point where MMOs just dont cut it any more - happened to many others before, me included.
See, I still read these boards every once in a while, simply because it is interesting to see what's going on, but I quit online gaming a good while ago, simply because it bored me. Its like eating the same kind of food every day, even if its your favorite dish - eventually you'll find that you just had enough. MMO'ing is like a habit and i personally found it a bit difficult to let go - you just get used to come home, start up the computer and level your toon. But really, you should stop if you realize that it doesnt really hold your interest any more and find something else to do. Otherwise its just a waste of time.
Just browse through the boards and look at all those threads complaining about how MMOs are not what they used to be and what not, but really its just a sign that people outgrow the games that played such an important role in their everyday life and now dont know what to do with their time ...
definitely a good point, but I am relatively new to mmo's and the "mmo experience" you guys have had I am still looking for. If I could find a game I could STAND lvling to cap, maybe I'd find it . Almost found that in shadowbane with their lighting quick lvling, except I couldnt stand sucking up to the immature psychotic guild leaders to get the ganking protection that lvling requires.

Buy Two Worlds tomorrow. Play it till November. Buy Hellgate. Be happy forever.
That's what i'm doing except I got BioShock till Two Worlds lol.
Two Worlds is like a Diablo2 clone with a little bit of Oblivion thrown into it.
Another substatute for Two Worlds is Titan Quest.
This is only good if you like action based games and not turn based (MMOs are turn based except a few that are action based.. not many). No more auto-atks ftw
[ Played ] 2Moons, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Everquest II, Guild Wars, HellGate: London, Lord of the Rings Online, Rappelz, RF Online, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Last Chaos
[ Playing ] Everquest II
[ Waiting ] Aion, Age of Conan
I know exactly how you feel. The only game I've played to a decently high level is L2.
Whenever I ask people why they keep playing these games(I have played very close to EVERY one) they always tell me either, community, which I can understand, or End-game. If the game isnt fun before you get to the End-game, its not worth playing. That response got me a lot of immature responses.
All I can tell you is, hopefully some of the next gen games will make everything better. No mmo out right now has the ability to hold people. I'm sure a WoW lover will say something about WoWs population, but consider the fact that most people started playing mmos on WoW, and most people stick with their first MMO for a while. Regardless, wait it out, or find a place where you can have fun just being in the world of the game, instead of just playing it. Get with a good guild, find an area you like to chill in (I loved Nif in RO) , and if you love PvP or PvE, choose your mmo wisely.
I hope this helps you. Good luck mate.
Wait for a fairly new mmo-game. The big MMOs of yesterday are either barren or gameplay and people are too far ahead in advancement.
As sample DAoC in its first few years was the MOTHER of zergs. Battles with 3x 40 and far more ppl daily, same in Planetside.
So I thought, these huge battles are standard in MMOs and moved to the next one, two, many. But I never had this zerg-feeling again.
I hope, WAR will make this a bit possible, though only 2 realms. I am not sure, if AoC can handle this.
I want EVE Online mixed with pre cu SWG.
-----------------------------
SWG - PrePub9 Jedi mastered all professions - June 26th 2003 > Nov 15th 2005
EVE Online - 24 million SP - May 6th 2003 > Early 2005
PlanetSide - BR20 CR5 - May 23rd 2003 > Sept 2003
MMos and online gaming are a good *somewhat* clean source of entertainment - it beats pi**ing ones' money down the toilet at the bar and killing off several hundred brain cells.
If you feel you need a break - your choice; if you crave it and become consumed by it - once again your choice. So I am somewhat agreeing with you while disagreeing *snort*
I wouldnt compare it to favorite dishes etc - need food to live - don't "need" entertainment. I wish I had enough time to not know what to do with my time.
Peace,
x

Here is what you do. Play an old or crappy MMO, I find F2P asian MMO's are perfect for this. Play it exclusively. Marvel at the shotty controls, the lack of community, the lack of depth, the horrible grind without any sort of breadcrumb quest line. Try that for maybe a few weeks and then go back to your game, say EQ2. You will appreciate the game a lot more than before and will find a greater enthusiasm for it.
It's sad, but it works. We become bored with games even though they are high quality, play something old, even single player (Diablo 1 I usually do) and when I get sent back 4 hours of gameplay for neglecting to save I realize how lucky I am to play games with autosave functionality or MMO's that require no explicit saving or loading.
Go back and play Final Fantasy 1 and realize how painful it was to buy potions one at a time. We only appreciate what we have when we no longer have it.

I'm the same way. I have:
EQ - one day I'll learn how to play this game. There's so little direction.
EQII - love the game, but it's difficult to find mid-level players
COH/V - great game, but I'm done playing it after 1 or 2 instanced missions
LOTRO - great game, but few people are in my level (low) to help me with an epic quest
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
If this is what you like to do, what is wrong with it? I fail to see the problem here.
Play DAoC. Roll a Mid character. The fun begins. DAoC has the most unique and fun classes out of any game I've ever played. RvR is amazing and I'm not one who is all about PvP. I prefer PvE and some PvP but in DAoC I'm all about killing everyone.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
Im back in DAOC after jumping around to various mmo's also, all of which left me unsatisfied. The Bossiney cluster has plenty of action. The TOA servers need to be merged again as the population is too low, but Mythic is not responding to this need at the moment. But anyway, I'll be playing DAOC until Warhammer comes out. But I would recommend checking out some non-mmo's coming out, such as Bioshock which is an awesome game.
If this is what you like to do, what is wrong with it? I fail to see the problem here.
I dont particularly LIKE doing it. Id like to experience endgame for once.

I think this guy vazzaroth expalained it best:
"I'm addicted to the concept of MMOs, not any one game. If I am not subbing to something, I go through withdrawls."
This is probably me. I spend more time researching mmos and lurking forums than ive spent in all my mmo's combined. I'd still like to find one and stick with it, though.
Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.
I have a similar problem, but not quite as spastic as yours.
I have played recently:
WoW - Level 61 Rogue, Level 60 Warrior on PVP server, Level 60 Warrior on another PVP server, Level 60 Rogue on a different PVP server.
LOTRO - Level 43 Captain
EQ2 - Level 38 Wizard
DAoC - Level 50 Vamp on ToA server and leveling a druid on Classic server
A couple of MMO Betas.
Those are my recent accounts I have played. I just can't find a game with the same pull as the older games. IT seems to be getting worse and worse. The games that have kept me the most are:
Asheron's Call - 4 years
DAoC - 3.5 years
WoW - 1.5 years
LOTRO - 6 months
I hope that WAR reverses the trend.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
