Age of Conan=Shadowbane 2.0

I've been reading information on AoC and it seems ALOT like shadowbane: player made city's, City vs City Warfare, dark lore atmosphere..... Am i reading to much into this or is AoC just an improved version of shadowbane? (which isn't bad tbh, i looved SB H/C rules )

Well in a sense it has some features that SB had yes. Is it SB 2.0 no, its an entirely different game. Your generalization is a little over exaggerated, it'd be like me saying WAR = DAOC 2.0. Which is true in the fact it borrows some features from the other game, but its not all about that. Every MMO, EVERY MMO copies / improves upon other MMO's in the genre.

80 levels to gain for PVE. 20 levels to gain for pvp. PVE Player Cities, PvP Battle Keeps. Pve raids, pvp raids. You are reading too much into it, it would be just as easy to argue that AoC is like WoW because there are humans and has pvp and pve.

Try not reading too much into it.

Damn so many reply's so fast

Well i read the FAQ on the AoC main site and there are indeed similarities but yes also a lot different things. If that "Real Combat System" works out (have my reservations, either its awesome or it will suck completely) i might try it out. I Will be playing on an FFA server though (Free Killing for All)

Real combat systems are far superior.  Not only does it allow for "true" player skill to be shown but it also allows you to use strategy, no more of monsters/players being 20 feet form you and still causing damage when their a dagger melee.

Shadowbane was "Decent" if there were no bugs and actaully had faster paced combat.  I really dont care much for point and click cause normaly the fighting is so slow, but if it had faster combat i would of still played that game.

Well, IF implemented well, a Real combat system would be better indeed. But there are sooo many ways to mess it up i'm having my reservations... (anyone know any beta info regarding that or is NDA actieve?)

SB combat was awesome imho, i really don't mind slow combat if it means you can think more about your actions.

(and being a HC with 50% block meant you reaaaally had time to think before they killed yah (EVAAAAAAAAC) )

AoC is actually like.... wait it hasn't launched yet.  Ahhhh kinda hard to compare a game I never played to somthing.. hmm...

But they have gameplay footage of it.  Alot of it too, so its better than trying to argue for/against Darkfall ONline (which i would always fight for and cant wait for).

I would much rather have a Twitch combat game than a non.  I would choose Asheron's call (darktide) over shadowbane anyday.

AOC will have very good combat but its hard to say how they'll make PVP.  Balance wise I hope you would definately (like in darktide) be able to fight 2v1 and the 1 can win if he plays his cards right.  Otherwise i believe a game fails if not able to.  Thats what I call player skill, instead of relying on levels and equipable items, you rely on a short range of skills and outright combat moves that can get you in and out of danger as you please (if the attacker allows).

All MMORPGs evolve based on the past.   Certainly there will be features from previous games, that's unavoidable.

Every MMORPG can trace it's genetic code back to earlier games all the way to MUDs and then back to primordial games like Atari's Adventure :)

I completely agree, to say anythings goign to be completely original an dbrand new to anyones train of thought is completely outrageous to say.  But what im saying is not just taking a games UI, gameplay, skills/talents/attributes, slap some different models and slightly different animations in and call it YOUR original game that is so different from the tohers when you find yourself doing the same exact runs and raids that you've done in earlier games.

My impression is that this will be a Shadowbane/Guild Wars/Horizons hybrid.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

my impression (if loot and item decay are tossed in) this will be a shadowbane(pvp), SWG(crafting), and wow(pve) hybrid.

if decay and looting isn't tossed in, hmmm, i would say wow + daoc = aoc, without the RVR.

You know, DAOC has decay in it.....  so perhaps WAR will as well.... but no looting in the traditional sense in either game.

This is like WAR = WOW, they have there similarities, but in fact are baseless assumptions.

I don't think any MMO within the next 10 years can be where you are talking about. Lag is a reality that isn't that close to gone yet. Never mind server connections and client connections, no MMO servers can handle sending out packets at the speed they need at all times.

If somebody is lagging in front of me, I'll be right freaking on top of him [on my screen] and I won't be hitting him because he's "out of range". Same seems to work against me with some fool lagging behind me will be 50 feet away on my screen and hitting me. Ranges of 10 yards (or whatever) on melee are created because, due to lag, melee classes will get owned 80% more than they should because <player> is "out of range".

If AoC has a range of zero on melee it *will not* and *cannot* work. The only way it could is if they enforce under 100 pings and ensure any packet loss users are also not allowed. Pure client side combat could remove the problem for melee, but would make the poor ranged guys take damage from people 200 yards away. Don't even get me started about the hack-happiness of client side combat.

Either way, I look forward to the release of AoC to see how they do! :)

    T.:

Found your comment of quite some interest - the lag limitations on innovating combat systems has been debated "at" me a bit lately - and i was directed to the whitewolfclan site re: Pirates of BS

with both AoC and pirates; I'm wondering how much they can get around lag and connection issues...

myself; i've seen games "instance" combat/adventures with some success (compared to just walking in The City Of Lag)

i don't know a thing about shadowbane but I'm really looking forward to some challenges to what i consider a RUT of all-but-cosmetically identical combat systems.

shall we try to keep High Hopes?
