City of Heroes/Villains. You can get both games for I think $30 and a free month to play. I found the community to be helpful and if you can find the right Supergroup you'll have all the assistance you need getting started. (I also recommend looking at fan sites for more information about any game you play. Some have guides and advice.)

Lotro is a good MMO for newcomers (easy gameplay, quick achievements) and it has a friendly community.

www.worldofwarcraft.com is the newbie island of mmo's, good place to start, then you can move on to more sophisticated game.

I would also agree that LoTRO is probably your best bet.

The game play is easy, the quests are straight forward, and there isn't a large focus on loot.

It has simple game mechanics and a great community.

I would stay away from WoW not because it is a bad game, or that it is hard to learn, but because the game and the community are just to well developed for new players.  I think you will feel lost and like you always have to play catch up.

Since LoTRO is so new you will be growing with the game and its community.

The three listed above would have been my recommendations for good starting games....though COH/COV is in the decline stage atm.

I'd definitely try out World of Warcraft or Lord of the Rings Online first, then if those don't feel like the right thing try out City of Heroes/Villains for a quite different experience. Most seem to fall into the group who like the WoW/LotRO style, so I'd recommend those first.

For a first MMO, WoW is the way to go. It's really easy to pick up and get into.

try WYD Global . .it has easy user interface so you will not get bores.  . as a beginner you must start to an easy game to familiarize the flow or concept of MMOs

    just a suggestion . .

If you aren't especially into graphics, try Gemstone IV, http://www.play.net/gs4/

I would also say WoW, LOTRO, or CoH, CoV.  And CoH/CoV is not in the Decline stage.  I have been playing since it first game out, I'm still playing and the population has been the same since the initial decline when WoW first came out.
