Congratulations to NCsoft and ArenaNet who announced today that Guild Wars has reached the 4 million mark in units sold since its release in 2005.

Bellevue, WA. Aug. 21, 2007--The Guild Wars® franchise of online roleplaying games has broken the four million units sold mark in just over two years. Published by NCsoft® and developed by ArenaNet®, the Guild Wars series (consisting of Guild Wars, Guild Wars FactionsTM, and Guild Wars NightfallTM) has set the standard for online co-operative and competitive play with award-winning content and a subscription-free business model. Since the first campaign launched in 2005, Guild Wars has developed legions of loyal fans who are hotly anticipating the August 31 release of the game's first true expansion, Guild Wars: Eye of the NorthTM.

"ArenaNet's fantastic work on Guild Wars has helped make NCsoft the leading online gaming publisher in the world," said Robert Garriott, CEO of NCsoft North America. "Guild Wars players continue to join in droves and stay loyal to the franchise thanks to a business model that makes for a very accessible product. Guild Wars is not really a true mmorpg, but none the less it's fun and free to play.  I hope to see more games like that in the future. Guild Wars prove that free to pay games can be viable and that you don't need to charge peoples to be succesful.

Guild Wars tried something innovative and different.   And they succeeded in a genre filled with miserable failures.  Kudos to them.

Congrats to Anet. Keep up the good work. I been playing this game for 2 years, the graphics are better then most big mmo's out there today as well as their pvp is very good. Guild Wars 2 will be a non subscription mmo which I am looking forward to.

Not to disparage the game, but it is NOT a MMORPG, it is much closer to the diabol genre.  But they should be congratulated for finding their niche and doing well in it.

last time I checked, MMORPG stood for Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game.

    Guild Wars

    Massive-Yes

    Multiplayer-Yes

    Online-Yes

    Roleplaying-It can be

    Game-Duh

so, therefore, Guild Wars is an mmorpg...

nonetheless, I love this game. I don't understand with the success of this game, f2p mmorpgs are still trying to scam ppl with item malls and monthly payments...2 WORDS...RIP OFF

    Grats A-Net!

hard to know how good 4m is. Don't really know the sales of other mmos and how many of those 4m have bought an extra expansion or so? I liked the game though and its good to hear its still getting new players.

Gratz to ArenaNet. Only one question which popups directly, is it active accounts (people who log in every once or twice per day and play for some hour) or is it just registered accounts, because many buy the game and then play it for a short while. The problem with f2p games are the fact that it's hard to see the exact number of people who play the game.

Well, Diablo II sold 4 million copies in approximately 1 year (source), but then again DII has only one expansion/add-on. The number of copies sold of the GW add-ons would be interesting to know.

It's total number of boxes sold. They don't say whether it's sell-in (to the retailers) or sell-through (to end user), but I doubt it would make a big difference. Surely not all those 4 million play actively, or at all - some might not even have installed it ever. Still a good number. :)

The game is not massive. you're never playing with a massive amount of people. In fact, you can't even play with a massive amount of people.

"Guild Wars is not an MMORPG," said Jeff Strain, producer of the game.""

Even the producer of this game has already confirmed this game is not an MMO. Now just let this subject die and accept the fact its not an MMORPG.

    lol pwned.

Grats to Guildwars though :) I think it has something to do with it lacking a subscription fee though... as opposed to it being because its a perfect example of what a... erm, non-mmorpg should be.

    Guild Wars

Massive-Yes NO massive means being with 100's at the same time in the same zone in guildwars you only get upto 7 others in the instanced parts which make up 90% of the game the other 10% is basically a 3d chat room with vendors.

    Multiplayer-Yes

    Online-Yes

Roleplaying-It can be     If you enjoy the terrable community yes.

I did give this game a go but the community turned me off it.

Last time I checked massive meant at least 24 people playing together in one place, which Guild Wars has - Alliance Battles.

I'm pretty sure it requires a lot more than 24 people...unless you want to claim games like Battlefield 2 or even Resistance:Fall of man are MMO's.

Hum I bought factions a while back but could never get into it, maybe ill install it now and give it a whirl, but id rather w8 for GW2 which sounds so much better, the biggest thing that turned me off GW, sounds silly, is i cannot jump and i am glued to the floor, I guess playing WoW for so long coming to GW felt very restrictive.

I think it was one of the requirements for suggesting a game to be added to the list for this website. There was a loooong debate about it in the past where it was decided that when it comes to MMORPGs, 24 people in one place at one time is deemed massive. Plus, last time I checked there could be hundreds of people in a town at once, and regardless if they're just trading or not, they're still playing the game.
