Star Wars Galaxies: Online Events Dev Diary

The Star Wars Galaxies Official site has been updated with a new developer diary by Online Events Manager, Jason "Pex" Ryan.

Greetings! I'm Jason "Pex" Ryan and I'm the Online Events Manager for Star Wars Galaxies. Some of you know me pretty well by this time, others, not at all. If you don't know me or what I do, that's okay. I've been asked to put up a Dev Diary to indoctrinate...I mean, "inform" you about what I do around here. A bit of "the man behind the curtain" stuff.

So what is it I do here? Well, the easiest thing to say is that I get to be Darth Vader. That's an over-simplification, but it's true. Anytime you see one of the Star Wars characters interacting with players and being generally where they aren't supposed to be, it is me behind the keyboard pulling the virtual strings. I get to be Luke, Leia, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Admiral Ackbar, Watto, Nautalans, droids, Ewoks, etc. Playing these "named characters", as I like to call them, is fun, but it's only part of running events for SWG.

I've been working on SWG since just after launch. Before I was hired, I managed to finagle a beta account while working at another game company, so I've been following the game as long as any veteran has.

Pex ran the live Live Event in Las Vages for Fan Faire.  Great guy.  Though our team didn't win it was a pleasure to meet him.  He does a great job with the tools he has on SWG.

Once for a live fashion show, he helped the crowd stay incontrol by ejecting PVPers out of the show.  It was asked that the audiance respect the presintation.  He 'ported them to another planet so they could continue without the event bothering there fun.

I used to enjoy being behind the keyboard playing a star wars character as well. Course that was two and a half years ago when the game was worth playing.

As not to get this post deleted, I know I'm supposed to support attacks on games with backup. So I encourage folks to visit their favorite search engine and read anything written about swg since 2005. About 90% of it anyway, the other 10% defending the NGE was, I suspect, written by mostly idiot monkey children.

*Games on our site will be treated just as we treat people. Unsubstantiated comments about specific or general games will be penalized in nearly the same way attacks against people will. The exception is that you can say mean things about games provided you back it up with reasons.
Example: "Game X sucks." is not a legitimate comment. "Game X sucks, because..." is acceptable.

    Thank you,

Wow do you really have to seek out every SWG post so you can bash the game..   I'm a vet of the game and yeah I wasn't happy either - but I really don't see the need to cry over spilled milk... Get over it already.

As for the discussion... /applaud Pex....  Pex is the best - I've ran events and been to events and Pex was great.   One of the few bright spots left in the game..

Pex is one of the good guys.

He actually frowned at me at an event nearly four years ago, when I said something that was off script at the event I was attending.

He made up for it by giving me a live event badge, though.  I was at another event where he was pulling Vader's strings, and putting up with a lot of guff fromsome guy in a Jawa outfit.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I just can't get over how many people, who were upset by the changes in SWG, just can't seem to move on. I did not like what happened but I never left and still to this day see many ,many players that have left to go else where and game, come back to SWG. Even though it is not the original game we all came to love.

Instead of telling people to read all the hate mail just tell them to try the 14 day free trial and make up their own mind about the game.

Give me back SWG at sunset and keep adding to it and I would pay twice what it was costing.

I agree, let new comers make up their own mind about the game.

Yeah, lets forget about the past, what happened, who betrayed who... After all, we all know that if someone do some wrongess, OF COURSE it will not do agaIn, we DONT need to see the past to forseek the future, history never repeats itself, thats why I think Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin would be great people to vote for today... Lets forget the past, guys... What you do has NOTHING to do with what you are... Actlually, I am totally in favor to NOT tell the people about the past of anything, includig those historic figures, lets the new borns vote for new versions of those people, WITHOUTH knowing (and therefore supporting them).

Do not listen to those people speaking 'Remember the Alamo', also... Lets the newcomers decide whom they should trust WITHOUT knowledge of the past, its better this way... Lets ALWAYS support people of the past, no matter what they have done, lets just give them more money so they know we dont care of what they do to us.

Of course my  post above was ironic and exagereted, but it shows that a 14 days trial DO NOT tell you what they may do with you. I played for years SWG, not only 14 days, and even so I was betrayed. They just robbed my money, my time, and they may do it again, or worst, they are now promising good things, which are a bunch of lies, because the game is DEAD. All those announcements are bubbles at the wind, nothing is really significant, when it is ALMOST significant its, in fact, some old thing BADLY brought back from teh past. That means that they KEEP ON THE LIES. They DO not intend to make this game better, simply because they lack the personal team to do that, so they keep making things of thin air, vain promises only.

We, the MMORPGers have a strong community and we cant take lightly  this kind of corporation, who treat us all like idiots and then keep treating us like idiots, hoping to gain a few more dollars before they close the door. Lets make SOE an example, DO NOT SUPPORT them or there behavior. They have lost 90% of their player base, they are closing doors, and screaming lies just for more survival time. Pay atteniton, all the announcements made by SWG have no consistence, have no money spend on development, and they still try to copy WoW, trying to do a poor carbon copy of a sucessfull, but empty, game. Lets give our response to them, gentleman, lets tell them to put their 'game' and their 'political treatment of their player base''  where the sun never shines...

Yeah no doubt. SOE and the people they've dupped would be thrilled if the playerbase-in-exile just went away, but that isn't going to happen. You can't screw over such a large group of people and expect to get away with it, especially when said group of people pretty much has nothing better to do than spend all day online.

I can either do one of two things. I can play pre-cu star wars or I can trash the company that took it away. I prefered the first, but with that option no longer available I am more than willing to do the second.

SOE is a lying thieving cancer on the mmo genre and we aren't going to take it.

The game does suck, and they definately screwed many of us over by destroying the game that we bought and replacing it with the NGE. I've checked out some of the trials since then, and things are better than when the NGE was forced upon us, but it's still not the game that I bought and enjoyed, and it's still utter rubbish imho. It still has Benny Hill fast animations and movements that just look funny, and worse, it still has all the professions eliminated, although they did add talents in to the couple professions that they left behind. Oops, did I say talents, I meant expertise. That's right, talents are in WoW, aren't they.

OK, that being said up front, I have to say, that Pex is one of the best they have. I ran a couple events, and Pex was helpful and fun, and what's more important, I think he truly enjoys doing those things with the players. He is perhaps the last bastion in SWG for the players that are still there, and the only guy I would say you can count on there.

    Hello.

Although I have never met Pex, that I know of, I am sure he is more than able to do a fine job. Most of the Dev's at SWG do at least try and do well at their jobs, I have a tendency to blame thier supervisors for the bad ideas being force down the ranks.

I have been a player from the beginning and I must admit I left the game 2 months after NGE laughed. I first left because of the disaster of NGE and lost 7 months of pre-paid game play and an expansion that was worthless. On 2 occassions I came back, hoping that the bugs and poor gameplay was fixed, but I was just as bitter as when I left having lost my favorite game

Last month I reopened my account again and found that almost all of my complaints about the gameplay had been fixed. I still don't like the limitations with my character wheras before it was more freeeform. Or that Jedi is a starting class instead of the UBER class it once was. But to be honest I have found the game to be playable now and I have met a few upstanding people online, so I just payed for a 3 month sub. I understand the sour grapes amongst the former vets, I'm still upset by my loss of money, but I see no reason to take it out on Pex.

I look forward to Pex's Dev Diary.
