I don't think it will be too long till we have network like speeds over the internet, I would say roughly 4-8 years, depending on breakthroughs, services and market reaction. As a MMORPG takes 2- 3 years to complete they can soon (2 years time?) start using a variation of "Moore's law"
At the moment we are facing the "Clone war" of MMORPG's, the one that can pull off the best clone wins, pretty sad, but it's true.
2D's have a major advantage, as they lack the Z co-ord it's a lot simpler to deal with the traffic, a game server and client both have less data to deal with so you could have more people on screen/s server at the same time, also as it's a fixed screen angle it's much easier to debug, making a more stable environment yet have a greater population. In the end a 2D can work on a slower computer and connection, gameplay can be concentrated on as there will be less graphical bugs, and yet even though it's a isometric view you can make it look very good (ie. AoE2).
Vengi is very right in that last post of his. But for some reason only the Koreans have a brain. Maybe some Canadians will get the idea and make a good 2d MMORPG, but I really dont think we are going to see any United States companies starting developement on a 2d game. Most of them are under the impression that 2d is outdated and there is no consumer demand for them. Its going to take a fledgeling team to put together something like this in North America.
Oh, and it took 10 years for dial-up modems to become a standard in the American Household. High speed internet such as Cable and DSL is not yet a standard for most people, so its probably going to be another 15 years before we see the really high speed internet as a norm.
I don't like 3d at all. The camera view gives you a disadvantage. This is just my opinion but I don't like it. Someone can sneak up on you from behind and attack you and by the time you turn around to attack back, you're dead. This is what happened to me in Shadowbane sometimes. I just don't like 3d. 2d makes me feel more in control. I like 2d.

I assume you're waiting for WoW then since its basically the same style graphics as Warcraft 3 with a lot of the same characters just made into a mmorpg. The 2d graphics that flow are what I like to see versus some 3d game that would make my poor computer so slow I couldn't even get going. Although I do like to be able to swing around my character to get a good look at everything... hmm.. now I seem to have thought myself into the middle...

I dont think there are a lack of good programmers out there, but a good programmer alone cannot produce an MMORPG. He needs the backing of a company with lots of money, and these companies do not take the risks involved in creating good or new games
MUAHAHAHAHAHA"
my reply: not really. I friend of mine is a lone programmer, creating his own MMORPG as we speak and doing a hell of a damn good job of it. He has no professional history, and no financial backing. He's just a good programmer. Of course he's looking for more programming helo, and he isn't an artist and is looking for artists as well. 3d and 2d.
Game companies also have more positions than just programmers and artists. they have positions for game designers, the ones who actually blueprint the whole game out and tell the programmers what to program and the artists what to create. Sometimes the artists and programmers have little control over what goes into the game.
2D bleh, what is this 1985? come on ppl lol. A mmo should have both content and awesome graphics. we have seen it all and want more, not more of the same.

You can have a 2D game with awesome graphics, the difference between a 2D and 3D game is more much more then just about graphics it's really about gameplay.
In 2D games it is easier to control the world around you as there isn't a moving camera...2D games have alot going for them if they are done right.
Back in the 1980's there was real progress with games, now it seems there isn't any new ideas, at least nothing groundbreaking in game play terms.
At least the games made in 1985 were fun lol
