The one thing MMO's love to copy from WoW....

...is the website.

Many don't know this, but before Voyage Century was published by IGG, an english website was already live. The website lay - out and font was ripped off from the official WoW website.

Seems like VC is not the only one.

Then don't post in a thread about a subject you don't care about.

does it affect you, your gameplay, the experience you have on a site/game? so now we are complaining about cookie cutter websites? OH NOES! i guess everyone using vbulleting, php, or other such template websites should be ostrasized as well?

On this forum, people talk about a lot more then just the gameplay and experience of the games. We also discuss the business, customer support and PR parts of the games, and yes, a website. When a "proffesional" company publishes an MMO, one might expect they develop their own website, No?

possibly...but does this logic extend to those consumers who use prebuilt website software like php and vbulletin which come with a standard template?Frankly...if it is done correctly, has a good search engine, and good stability, the rest is just fluff to me

About the only thing I like about WoW is the quality they put into their web site.  There is no doubt that they have a very talented web design team and graphic artists.  Personally, I don't care for anyone that copies the work of another and uses it to make money, although some people would say that copying is the sincerest form of flattery...

Thats just software, but this website clearly stole the front and lay - out of the World of Warcraft website, in an attempt to draw more players to the game.

how do you know that blizzard just didnt buy a template as well? i dont see anywhere that it was made by blizzard solely. (i know its highly unlikely...but there are companies and software which strictly make and maintain websites)

It is pretty much the same layout... but it's all good.  I don't really care about the website as long as it's decent.  All I care about is the game.

According to a company in China, Blizzard ripped off the font from them.

    Go figure.

Well, it's a pretty good layout. It's clean and easy to use. I don't got much against it. If you should copy something, copy something that's good.

They love to copy that word, "of."  Lord of the Rings, Warhammer Age of reckoning, City of Heroes, even EQ2 is jumping on the "of" bandwagon with Echoes of Faydwer and Rise of Kunark!

    Blizzard invented the word "of."

Maybe they are using the same portal software, or maybe the portal software one is using is a “clone” of the portal software the other is using.  In any case who cares is perfect world is copying anything

Honestly, as long as I can get around the website and it's not a huge eyesore, I'm not really worried about other MMO sites copying it.

Now, the one thing I do like about the WoW site is that it seems to be ever-changing.  I work a little bit with web design and development, so I tend to notice when they move something.  They just changed quite a bit recently, which is nice.  I like to see that they work to make it a little better as time goes by.

Some MMO sites stay the same for years.. where's the fun in that? :)

Either way, as long as it doesn't look like someone just threw up some neon HTML with broken links and graphics, I'm happy.

  • I assume you mean the look.  Because armory was stolen from EQ2 by Blizzard if we are talking functionality ;)

No, Blizzard did not "invent" that website layout, Iv seen it done ever since i started playing MMO's at Allakhazam's back when it was only for EQ, DAOC Herald has had that layout from the start as well, same with AO, same with countless other websites.

    FAIL

You have to remember one thing:  If Blizzard did it, Blizzard did it first.

What's really funny is how the English language stole the name "Blizzard" and used it as another word for "snowstorm."

I'm actually more disturbed by that horrendous music video on the Perfect World web site. I visited Korea recently and I have to say they have THE most shittest, garbage music I have ever heard, it's absolutely horrible. I'm not sure if this music video is Korean, but it sounded damn similar.

Are all Asian countries like this? They're music is this horrible blend of corny, syntho, pop, happy-happy shit.

Which was stolen from Magelo, an amazingly popular third-party site developed for EQ1 players before SOE even had anything closely resembling it.

Also if someone stole the layout of a site I developed (to the extent of whats going on here) I would be massively pissed off.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Are you looking at the layout here?  The Perfect World site is almost an exact duplicate.  Those other sites you mentioned are similar but not anywhere near the same.   There are afterall, only so many ways you can lay out a web-site, and fantasy MMOs share a common theme, but as the OP pointed out, it's as if someone looked at the WoW website and said "copy this!"

I think Tolkien might have something to say about that considering he wrote LOTR over 50 years ago
