Shenmue Online

GameloadingGameloading Member UncommonPosts: 14,182

Those who played Shenmue know that the series, despite being only 2 games, has a rich world (Or city) and deep background. Some consider Shenmue a true classic. Others just...didn't get it.

If you haven't played Shenmue....you don't have a dreamcast.

Shenmue fans were surprised when Sega announced that Shenmue 3 would be an MMORPG, known as Shenmue Online.

The game has been canceled and revived multiple times. However in 2006, an enhanced trailer was released which I think looks quite impressive,

Its sad the game was canceled in 2007.

Hooray someone else that knew of the existence of this wonderful game.  At times it could get annoying but I loved playing it "have you seen a small boy" is the one quote that comes to my head...and I haven't played in years.

I'd have to agree to an extent.  The DC imho was actually a good console.  Developers just over looked it.  Soul Calibur when it was released was one of the best looking games of it's time.  Plus the DC had other great and fun games like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, Tech Romancer, Shenmue, and Phantasy Star Online.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

If it's from sega I wont even bother with it.  PSU could've been a great game, and look what they did with it.  The population is ridiculously low on the game.  On top of that they are charging way too much for the monthly fee ($5 a month sounds good for what PSU offers).   I would have to hear great things about a game made by sega before thinking about touching it.

Shenmue Online was not even developed by the same developers as PSU. Heck, it was not even developed in the same studio. Sega has many different studios.

Sorry i really dunno much about Sega's different studios and what not.  All I know is how they dealt with PSU.  I'm not saying this game won't be good.  I'm just saying i don't really trust sega after what happened with PSU.  Can you really blame me?  I can forgive them for marketing it as a MMORPG when it wasn't, thats fine.  I also would've expected the gameplay to be more advanced that PSO, that's also fine.  What really pissed me off was the fact they had us paying monthly fees, while they had content on the disc, but chose to keep a shitload of it locked.  Again, forgive me for my ignorance on sega's branches.  I'm still going to find any sega online game suspect after that.

Sega has never marketed PSU as an MMORPG. Sega did it this way:

Instead of creating more content after release, Sega developed extra content before release. the reason they did this is because of the Playstation 2. The playstation 2 didn't have a hard drive.

Also, with Shenmue Online canceled, I don't think we're going to see any online games from Sega for a while.

    To Nethaniah:

Its really hard to describe shenmue. It was a very unique game for its time. Its best to describe the game as an adventure game.

Sorry, but they didn't create extra content until solo online story mode was added.  Everything else was locked on the CD.  They have been unlocking everything slowly since release.  Also the PS2 does have a harddrive they just chose not to use it.

    thats what I said sherlock...

And no, the Playstation 2 does NOT have a hard drive build in. Only Final Fantasy XI came with a hard drive.

wow...  you're implying that they created "extra" content ahead of time.  this would mean they had everything ready on the first day, then put in extra stuff after.  meaning, they had all the levels ready to play from day one.  all the expert jobs were there, available, for everyone on the first day.  oh yeah, and moatoob was ready to go to the first day.  S-Rank mission?  oh yeah, first day?  All the PM models?  Or even the shit needed to reset the PM?  None of that shit was there.  Please tell me about all the extra shit they made besides solo online missions, which I mentioned.  I wasn't trying to make this into an argument... I was just talking about how i felt about sega after this game.  You have no clue wtf youre talking about and come off as an asshole.  Talkin about "sherlock."  maybe you should know exactly wtf youre talkin about instead of acting like you know.   Tell me I'm wrong.  Prove to me I'm wrong.  Since obviously I don't know what I'm saying.

Yes, all content  (Everything you mentioned) was already on the disc, it was just locked, and Sega unlocks the content over time. Sega never "Added" anything to the game, they just unlock. it works like this: Sega made Phantasy Star Universe, locked away a bunch of content and unlocks content every few months to keep people playing (and thus, paying). Its a well known fact and I'm surprised you didn't know this.

As I already explained to you, The Playstation 2 (And a number of Xbox 360) don't have a hard drive, it would be impossible to patch "new" content.

You're just being silly man....  this is what you said, " Sega developed extra content before release."  Having content locked on CD that should be available is not extra.  What you're saying is, the content that was available (and when I say available, I mean ready to play... not sitting on a CD locked from players) the first day of launch was the whole online game.  If that's true that's even more of a reason to not trust sega with any online game.  Come on man.  Stop trying to make me look stupid by saying "Sherlock" and "I'm surprised you didn't know this."  It's obvious by my posts that I did know content was locked.  You're just being a prick for no reason.

Ofcourse by extra content I meant content that was not playable,in this case, locked away, or else it wouldn't be extra content...
