Am I too casual?

maniacfoxmaniacfox Member UncommonPosts: 171
A friend introduced me to WOW about 6 months before TBC came out, I really enjoyed it and for an adult that has a job/life I thought I put quite a lot of time into it.

But then TBC came out and I hadn't even hit lvl 60 yet, so by the time I was getting close it looked like nobody was playing the lvl 60 instances any more, Nax.... what? And not just the instances, the lvl 55-60 zones were almost empty, hell, just look at the green drops you get in Outlands.

Anyhow, I kept playing in the knowledge that I would get to 70 eventually. High on the newness of TBC I even rerolled a brand new belf and decided to level this as my main, but now it looks like just as I will be getting this character close to 70 the next expansion will come out and the limit will go up to 80!

I don't just have one character but I don't have more than 5 and I play 2-3 nights a week, maybe more on weekends. I think this is quite a lot in the perspective of my life.

I feel like I will never catch up without increasing my play time a lot. I know people at work that got to lvl70 within a month of TBC coming out, but these guys are like 10 hours a night, 7 days a week, WTF?

I am too casual, does anyone else feel the same?

YES. I feel like the only people who think this game is "easy" are the old-time mmo'ers who lack aforementioned job/life. I doubt the game will hold my interest in the months it will take me to get to 70 anyway.

I don't know think so.   Me and a few others have been playing WOW more than a year now.   We play maybe 5 days aweek, 2 or 3 hours in the evening.   We are in no hurry in hitting level 70.   Why rush?    We enjoy a slow pace and not worry about the level.   We do things together or solo.   It makes no difference to us.    Only one of us has hit a level 70.   I"m close but in no hurry.

So you are not that casual as we are, in my opinion.

Figured I would put my first post here.  Hi Im new.

Anyway, I relate.  Playing games is about doing what is fun for you.  Thankfully WoW has a lot of variety of things to do for the casual gamer.

As far as the instances go, I have friends who level past them around ten to fifteen levels and then just solo them for loot.  Of course Im talkin the smaller ones, not the massive ones near end game.  At any rate, the rule of thumb should be have fun.  *shrugs*

As long as you're enjoying your game time, there's no such thing as "too casual." The only drawback to moving at a laid back pace is when your friends with more ingame time blaze ahead of you and you have no RL friends to party with. When I played WoW, I had a ton of free time and worked nights, so I had a lot more gametime then my friends. I actually created alts that kept pace with my RL friend's levels so we could have our own fun when they had a chance to play.

Otherwise, enjoy your time and leave the silly competitive B.S. up to the juvenile "L337" crew.

Agreed - play at your own speed.

The game is about having fun, not a race to the finish line!

yeah alot seem to rush towards end game because thats what they find fun, if you really want to do end game stuff then i can see why your feeling that way, i really don't care for end game raids, i do 5 mans and thats it, i have lots of alts and am on a low pop server and i can only play early mornings so there are even less people on, but i eventually find a group here and there, and i got some friends who play so we figure ways out to do instances without the so called perfect groups...anyways i'm casual gamer, and honestly i don't feel left behind i just got my draenai priest to 57 and my old rogue main sits at 61 he did one quest in outland lol....be a long time before i really do any outland stuff.

I like WOW, atm, but I don't believe its a game that caters to casuals. If it did there would not be raids.

Raids can be casual, theres no rule that you must raid 5 nights a week, You can leave the 25man raids and just do the 10man raids at endgame... thats Karazan and the soon to be released Zul'Aman. just dont expect to progress as fast as hardcore-nolife-nojob guilds.

An experienced 10man group can clear Karazan in 4 hours.. I am sure any casual can squeeze that into a sunday, if not than there is no MMO thats casual enough for them.

Thanks for the feedback guys and I totally understand what you are saying about taking it easy and stuff. But... it looks to me as though all the cool stuff is aimed at the raiding crowd, all the fun new content is in the raids, all the awesome new mobs are in raid instances, etc. etc.

I have seen most of the 1-50 content, so it's not that I'm desperate to get to 70 it's just that I want to see the new content because it looks fun, I want to get value from my TBC upgrade and also for fear of losing interest!

    Does that make sense?

On a side note I notice that Blizzard have announced that they are going to increase the xp gain curve pre-WOTLK, hurrah!

Not trying to start a fight or anything, but i work/ go to school, and I used to play MMO's and based upon what I used to play this is way easy.  You dont have to group, like in old school EQ or UO.  you dont have to run around in constant fear of losing all of your things (old school UO).  The think that makes wow great is that you can pick it up and figure it out at your own pace, you are not required to do the raids to get leveling done, while grinding is the fastest way to level (and get goodies) the questing helps break up the monotony.  I have not done any of the raid content and I still find myself enjoying the game.  I had this same argument with my former roommate who told me and i quote "I dont care about other games, i haven't played any other MMOs so to me this is hard" so I doubt you'll even listen to my points, but oh well.

yes you're to casual, once you hit level 70 i don't know how you're going to enjoy the end game, and i'm not talking about just the raiding.

but like some said, just take your time.

Actually I find a lot of the normal 5 man end game instances to be quite fun :-). If you play them casually, and don't overdo them by trying to get to revered in one day, then you'll probably enjoy the instances as well.

WoW isn't very casual friendly at all, but then I havn't found an MMO that was!

I don't think the MMO is entirely at fault though, its more the mentality of the player not willing to except people who are unable to put in the time.

To wank, or not to wank. The ultimate MMO sacrifice.

As long as you enjoy what you are doing who cares what others think of you, I personally like the leveling process and in your case its all new to you, I remember when it was all new to me I loved it. The 5 mans can be pretty fun and as you get closer to 70 there will be even more of them to do for you.

Alot of people love to hurry and level, and be the best, they want to get all the gear and try to get revered overnight so it turns into a grind and they get burned out. Take your time and do whats fun for you, there is no way to compete with others in MMOs because clearly whoever has the most time on their hands has the most epics, and having more epics doesnt mean anything anyway (even htough to some people it goes way over their head), I'd rather have a few epics and have a rl with friends and family than sit in my computer all day with no friends and have a set of epics.

The game does get pretty boring. All ways wanting to be the highest level. But as you race through to 70 you dont know how much fun is being throw down the drain but racing to 70. Once you hit 70 its all about raiding and the best guild suited for raiding. Your pretty casual for not playing as much. Those guys you work with are losers.....still can play 10 hours a day..... what about family... Ive already lost interest in the game.. Ive just recently quit last week..  GAME GETS FREAKING BORING AT 70 FOR THOSE WHO THINK IT GETS BETTER....

You have a point there, I have run across mothers who have babies and are there for every raid and are on more than me (im single with no responsibilities) it is really sad that people value the game much more than the family, and others hire babysitters so they can play WoW, how can you be home and hire a babysitter? I dont know. WoW may be addictive but it is not WoW's fault that people dont prioritize their life, if you care more about some epics who are Blizzards properties anyway more than your family you need to prioritize your life. Your kids will grow up fast and you will regret not spending time with them but playing a game that you will one day quit.

I agree that once you hit 70 the main focus of the game is to raid and get gear but you can do other things as well, I know a few people who raid when they can and even though they may not be far into progression they don't care, they play with their friends and enjoy what they do, like I said before having epics doesn't mean anything it just means you have more time than the other person. I got 70 on my mage a coupple of weeks ago and already have 4 epics soon to be 5, a coupple are crafted and some are from heroics and pvp rewards, you really dont have to raid to get decent stuff. I don't raid anymore either I actually have never done Karazhan or any other raiding instances in TBC and I did Botanica for my first time the other night. I am having fun so far, some of the things are still rather new to me and I will play until I get bored again and quit. Wtlk is also around the corner and im sure the leveling part of it will be fun.

Just do what makes you happy, dont try to compete with other players because you will never win, there is always that looser who lives of Doritos and never leaves the computer chair, they will have more gear and things than you but who cares, at least you have a family who cares about you and one night you can go to the bar with your friends and have some quality time, I would much rather live in the real world than World of Warcraft.

first of all: it is not true that raiders get all the goodies. Get to outlands and then you will see where the goodies are, right there, for everyone to take. outlands is freacking awesome.

    2) calm down. wrath of the lich king is not coming out tomorrow. 6-9 months still.. maybe more.

    3) so what if you do not reach the max level? i started playng at retail and guess what, I HAVE NOT REACHED MAX LEVEL EITHER. in 2+ years. I do not feel bad or anything, i enjoyed my game time and would not give a damn if there are dozens of level 70 with super epic gear.

    golden rule: have fun.
