Looking for a new MMO...

... and discovering that as of this moment WoW is one of few serious contenders. Out of the overwhelming amount of MMOs on the market at the moment, only a handful can truly be called successful, and of those WoW is arguably at the top. With that in mind, and a nagging curiousity that has gradually turned into incessant desire to see just what all the fuss is about, I have decided I will likely be choosing WoW.

Now that the back story is out of the way...I am by no means new to the MMO market. I played EQ for about 2 years and FFXI for about 3. I haven't dabbled too much into the recent offerings, aside from brief stints in Auto Assault, Matrix, DDO, and Vanguard, all of which disappointed me greatly. EQ was quite some time ago, and the 3 years I spent playing FFXI I enjoyed immensely. However, I had to quit due to time restraints, and from what I hear WoW is generally easier on you as far as how much time needs to be invested. Naturally, I know that some aspects of the game require a player to sit down and dedicate some time to it, but my problem that arose with FFXI was that I couldn't even level my characters if I did not have a good 3-4 hours to dedicate. I want to play an MMO casually, and I hear WoW is the place to do it.

That said, I am here to ask advice of the community here on what class I should pick. I'm sure more than a few people here have also played FFXI, and I am hoping you all can help me. In FFXI I played Warrior, Ninja, Dark Knight, Ranger and Samurai. From the research I've done (not much), I pretty much think I would like to start out playing a Warrior in WoW, but I welcome the insight of anyone willing to give it. I am mainly interested in dealing damage, but I'd like to know what kind of things I need to do to ensure that I can absorb a lot of damage as well as dish it out. And, if that particular course is too complicated/expensive/difficult for a newcomer to the game, then I guess I need advice on a good DD class that will be easier to get started in.

Hopefully that all made sense and I didn't ramble on too much. Thanks in advance to all who read & assist me, cause I am really needing an MMO fix

Yea if you enjoyed EQ then there really is no reason not to at least give the 14 day trial of EQ2 a try and test the water. I've been stuck in WoW for going on 2 years now pretty soon and I honestly hate it. It is a good game and is well taken care of and idk....just how well its polished off keeps from my going away from WoW into any other MMO.

All WoW classes are fun, they can be customized to your likes, but what it comes down to really is the style of play that you like, I am more of a caster lover so I enjoy the caster classes, Mage and Priest are my favorites. I have come to like Warriors and also Druids are alot of fun I hear, I suggest you make a few alts and play the beggining 10 levels or so and you will find out what you want to play.

WoW is fun and worth trying I think, not just because it has alot of subscribers but its something you havent tried before. There are quite a few of ex FFXI players that I have run across, anyway I hope that you like it.

I suppose this would have been a good question to ask in the first place, but it didn't even enter my mind. How much does race factor into which class you pick? In FFXI, your race played a large part in determining what jobs your character could excel at and which ones you probably would not want to choose. I'll see what I can find out on my own, but can you guys tell me what is generally considered the 'best' race for Warrior? I'd prefer not to play one of the larger races, but if they are far better for Warrior then I'll bite the bullet, and I'll probably get used to it. Thanks again.

Race doesn't play a huge factor, I never played FFXI but its not like that at all. All races can do all proffesions its just that every race has different atributes, special abilities rather, nothing huge. For example, Undeads, can break fear/charm/sleep, they can use Canibalize where they eat dead humanoid or undead corpses to regenerate their health, they can also breather longer underwater. Humans have Perception which is an ability that allows you to detect Stealthed targets, they gain reputation 10% faster compared to other races, they have Mace skills increased slightly etc. Its stuff that will help you at times but its nothing huge, if anything it matters the most with the priest class because the priest class can get a coupple of different abilities depending on the race. So far the best priest racial abilities are that of the Draenei but it doesn't mean that you can't make a priest of a different race.

Well, judging by your FFXI classes, you seem to have a thing for close quatered combat. Warriors are great but if you wanna really do some physical damage, I would start off as a rogue. It'll give you a better feel for the game. Don't be swayed by some ppl though. Alot of WoW players will constantly try to downsize that class. But there's no harm in trying it. Good luck!

Yeah, from what I have read Rogue is a pretty good starting class to kind of learn the ropes and still do some pretty good damage so I was thinking of starting off w/ that, but I'm pretty sure I will pursue Warrior once I get the hang of things. Thanks all for your input, I'm just about to log in for the first time  with any luck, I'll have found a new MMO to play.

Judging from what your wrote, a Warlock is your best bet.

    Can farm endlessly

    DPS machine (burst or sustained)

    Massive amounts of HP

    Very good starter character

It is also one of the most complex classes to play, which can be fun for some people, I for one do enjoy it sometimes, I just dont like how you rely on your pet to be part of a complete functoning warlock, could be why I never made a Hunter either but I do have a level 46 Warlock, they can be fun for the right people.
