Am I Dyslexic ?

porgieporgie Member Posts: 1,516

I was hoping that if anyone on these boards is dyslexic they could help me out.  Or anyone who knows something about it.

I'm wondering lately if I am dyslexic.  Here's why.  I have a lot of trouble with reading comprehension.  I always have, but lately it's been getting worse.

I'll give you an example of the things I do.  When I'm reading I often look at a word while I'm reading along the sentence and then I'll think to myself, "that sentence didn't make any sense".  Then when I go back and read the sentence again slowly I find out that I totally misread a word.  It's like I saw the word as something else.  I do this a lot.  On average if I'm reading a single page in a book I'll do it 3 or more times.

Another example is just now I was logging onto WoW to play for a few minutes and the splash screen came up.  Where it says "Expansion II", I read it as "Invasion II".  I realized it didn't make any sense and went back to look at it again to see "Expansion".

This is starting to cause a lot of anxiety with me because, like I said, I'm doing it more and more lately.

This will help you more than MMORPG.com will.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with how much your profile picture looks like actor Ryan Hurst.

I'm not sure who Ryan Hurst is.  But thanks for the concern.  lol.

I'm just a dim witted Italian/Native American mixed up guy.  Does that sum up Ryan Hurst too?

I have problems with that too.  But not just reading, but everything.  Like when someone is talking to me I don't even listen to them sometimes.  I don't do it out of rudeness, I feel bad after doing it, but it's just hard for me to pay attention to things.  Unfortunately, I do it while driving too.  That scares me because I'm afraid I'm going to cause a wreck someday and hurt someone.

i have the same thing here. ill try to listen to some one. and then at the end they ask me a question and i just say "hmm yea" and there like. what? and then i realize what happened. this also happens when i talk to girls >.< but the same thing goes for driving with me as well. but in that case maybe you have ADD. but idk.

There's a chance you could be dyslexic.  But without a proper diagnostic test it's hard to tell.

The symptoms you describe match up to a few other possibilities.  Have you had your eyes checked lately?  Sometimes things like astigmatism can cause symptoms like you are having simply because your brain is trying to make sense of what's being sent to it.  Have you noticed your vision blurred either when focusing on near or far objects?  Or maybe found yourself to be more sensitive to bright light, such as when you're outdoors?

After taking so many rigorous math classes, I actually developed a kind of dyslexia with numbers. Whenever looking at an equation, I'd always look to the right side of it first, and then go backwards. I became so good at reading equations backwards that I started reading entire numbers backwards (i.e., 12 becomes 21). Never had this kind of stuff before, and I took a break from math classes and its slowly clearing up. At one point though, it was so bad, I started getting paranoid at cashiers when they gave me the "wrong" change back.

    ask basic questions like that.

Not so much that.  It's sort of hard to explain.  It's more like my brain will look at a word (not necessarily just single letters or numbers) and interpret it as something else.  I will be reading along a sentence and something like "rebate" will become "reinstate".  Then after reading the sentence I realize how silly what I just read was, go back and read it again, and see that it's another word altogether.

It's really kind of scary.  It's been causing me a lot of anxiety lately.

Having people talking to you and not listening to them is part of being a man.

  • You could have an old fashioned learning disability. There's nothing wrong with your intelligence, it's a matter of signals getting crossed when they go to your brain. I'm sure a doctor can refer you to someone. Learning disabilities are more common than you'd think, and often go un-recognized. I don't know if they lump dyslexia in with them or not. I do know a few people who have learning disabilities. The important thing to remember is if you have one, YOU ARE NOT STUPID. I capitalized that because it seems to be a big obsession with alot of people who have them.

I have problems with getting numbers mixed with letters. I get 5's mixed with f's the most.

It doesnt look like dyslexia to me. looks more like you have a problem with attention or with your eyesight.

i always though Dyslexia was when you see letters and numbers in words upside down and backwards making them almost intelligible. You would also have a problem writing.

but then what do i know . Im not a doctor

What about writing from bottom to top instead of the standard top to bottom? I tend to write most letters and numbers like that and get a lot of comments about how weird it is. I also have terrible hand writing maybe due to how I stroke(LETTERS).

    Edit

BTW before you ask, I'm right handed.

The more you look for 'Whats wrong with you', the more you'll find, if you can just recognize your habits and try to correct them, you'll solve more problems then looking for a reason why and then having an excuse.

It could as well be something as simple as having an eyesigth problem.

The symptoms you describe is very often due to this.

I myself was certain I had 20/20 vision but when I tested my eyes for my drivers license it turned out that was far from the truth.

Man things changed when I got them glasses on, I became accutely aware of so much I never paid attention to before.

Going to an optician and having that checked takes an hour tops and is often free, ( allthough that means you have to buy your glasses from that store ).

At least make sure its not that, before you try to get a diagnose by a doctor.
