Call me a noob.. But I guess I'll never understand furries. I guess people like cute things. I guess people want to share cute things. But sometimes the cuteness goes a bit overboard, doesn't it?
I'm not at all trying to discount the legitimacy of likeing furries or even dressing up like a giant purple bear. I assume its more about being a part of a social group of common interests. But why furry creatures? To me dressing up as anything seems foreign but I guess I'm a bit of a baseball fanboy myself (in which I dress up in Giants gear almost daily). Furry creatures seem a bit on the saccharin side of life. Where's the drama? Where's the conflict? What is the purpose of being furry if there is no goal except being cute? Again I am purely curious.
Also, what would a furry community be like in this medium of second life? Would you only allow furries to be a part of it or would you open your doors to allowing others to visit. I'd be curious to pay a visit to such a community because I am so unfamiliar with it.

Gawd, 'cute' is not the word. The more you know, the more you want to run away screaming. It's basically just a sex fetish for stuffed/anthropomorphic animals.
If you want to know more than that, you're on your own. Welcome to the internet and all the shades of crazy it contains. =P
Pietoro you are wrong. Do some research, look into the furry phenomenon. It's not all about sex in anthro suits. It's much more than that. The only reason you and so many others think it's all bout sex is because that's all the media wants you to hear about it. It's the same for any other odd culture or strange fetish or off-the-wall human desire.
Talk to a furry, go to a furry convention, look online at the more mature (Not sexually mature, but socially) sites, you will see the furry community is made up of people who are friendly, helpful, accepting, and fun to be around. And not all furries wear suits. Some just enjoy the artwork, stories, and culture of it.
Second Life's furry sims are mixed, but like Luskwood, it's a PG furry sim. Not all are mature and full of sex, etc. You need to open your eyes, as do many people who just believe what they're told about the culture. You will be pleasantly surprised by what you can learn and experiance.

Everything you just said above applies to all of Second Life when people still try to refer to it as a glorified 3D chat program or just a place for cyber sex. Damn people, open your eyes!
Anyone can, although today is maintenance day :P It was originally scheduled to be down till 11 PST, and now they're saying noon. You can sign up for a free account which is only slightly more limited than a paid one. However, you can get pretty much all the things on a free account you can on paid, you just have to pay someone else for them
You can get land through outside entities who will charge you for holding it, much like a rental. Terms vary from place to place, but typically they want you to pay either in-game using Lindens which you'll have to buy/earn, or through Paypal with real cash.
There is a very sizeable furry community in SL, although it's a bit decentralized. Furry communities are NOT furry only, not most of them anyway. The opposite cannot be said of many of the human areas. If you do want to explore furrydom, be prepared to encounter bigotry. I would say your safest bet would be a place called The Chained Tail. It's both fur and human friendly if a bit adult-oriented, but the folks there can point you at about anything you might want to know about.
I recomend Luskwood to be the furry place to go, it is on the adult grid however it is PG rated area. The people there are very kind and will welcome everyone in as long as they stay PG rated while there. Very new comer friendly.

There is sooo much jealousy and greed and envy, it's the single-most bizarre thing i've ever encountered.
Just watch the episode of CSI where the furry gets run over.
