Help, Need mmoprgs for Dial-up. No downloads if possible. Thank you.

For about 4 years now I've been trying to find mmorpg to play with dial-up connection. Please do not list RuneScape.  I've downloaded Knight Online at my mom's office, beleive it or not, it worked pretty well with my dial-up, but sadly, it was like 2 days trial or something, after u had to pay. But i'm looking for free games. So please help me and list free mmoprgs that i could play with dial-up and that the file size is not big, or a game that doesn't need to be downloaded, thank you.

what your searching for is pretty darn near impossible. The only hope for you is another flash MMO, which would be similar to runescape.

Im sure theres other F2p mmos, but they would require a "download".

Umm, i don't really care to download i guess. I just want a game that wont lag with dial-up connection.

There's Adventure Quest, that seems like it would run well enough.

Yeah, I already tied it, tought i had problems loging back in after i registered an account. The server was full or whatever.

2Moons is one of the smallest downloads for a decent MMO atm, if you can get knight online, you can get 2moons

    Any more suggestions?

Astonia 3 probably works well... its old enough that it was probably designed for 28.8k modems hehe... They even have built in stuff for your character heal/defend itsef for people who lag like crazy.

    Are there f2p MMORPGS

     -Yes

Do the good f2p MMOs require a download?                                                                                                                                                                  - Yes, and usually a very large one. Archlord, Rappelz etc etc over 1gb

Can you play them with a dial-up connection w/out lag?                                                                                                                                               -NO, most f2p MMOs are a bit unstable and you get some lag even with high speed connections.

If you need a f2p MMO and are going to be using dial-up and don't want to download anything.. you don't exactly have much for choices. Runescape or Adventure Quest, if you want something better your going to need to upgrade your internet/system/ bla blah blah

May I ask your system specs? this will make a difference also.

I know people who play VG, EQ2, EQ, and WoW on 56k. The thing is forget about wanting to do things like PvP in most MMO's if your running on 56k. I played EQ on 56k for the longest time and it was fine, I would aim for older PvE-centric games that do not assume a high bandwidth connection.

Wurms.  But I haven't played so I can't tell you if it is good or not.

If you are having this issue for four years now, why don't you buy broadband?

  • LydonLydon Member UncommonPosts: 2,938

Maybe they can't afford it or it's overpriced where they live? Anyway...there are many games out there that run perfectly fine on 56K, the problem is getting the game downloaded, which sadly can't be avoided in most cases as F2P games usually have fairly large downloads. What kind of games are you interested in playing?

    2 options for you bro:

    1. Work hard, earn some money, and buy yourself a new pc and a broadband connection. Comcast has a deal now that for 24 bucks a month, 24 dollars man, thats nothing, you get super high speed internet. Then save up some money and buy a new pc. Any 1k-2k machine can run most of the games out there these days.

    2. Play crappy games.

Location people, most of the time it isn't the cost keeping someone from getting broadband. People who live in extremely rural areas still don't have access to it.

Exactly, and unfortunately some of those folks will never get it. It's not worth the money for cable companies to stretch out cable internet to some rural areas where there's a few houses every half mile. They'd spend more putting internet there than it's worth.

Try getting DSL, or if that still is out, then there's always satellite internet. It's no where near as fast as cable or dsl, but it's better than dialup. I think Direct TV and/or Dish Network have internet.

  • Flyte27Flyte27 Member RarePosts: 4,574

Yeah I believe there is satellite internet for Direct TV.

From what I understand the OP is a young person who can't get their parents to see a need for DSL. Been there and thankfully overcame that

To hlep you guys, I have 248 MB of RAM. It's a bit hard to play big games even tough I downloaded at my moms office. It lags like, madly lol. Also I have 2,60 GHz. That should help you guys. And no, I can't buy highspeed internet because i live far away from the city, a place where we have no futuristic rights, . I planned getting DSL but I rather wait till i'm 16, wich is next year, get my liscense and get a job. After I get my cash, i'll probly buy a laptop with wireless internet. But for another year, i'll stick with my dial-up internet. So if you people have more ideas please post. Thank you for the one that already posted.

Wow didn't know Dial up was still going.

Anyhow I remember a few years back I lost my internet for a few days so played on dail up and to be honest only games I could play was Eve and Neocron talking a while back not sure how they would run now.

Eve took ages to buy and sell but worked.

Neocron lagged like hell when zoning and took a while but was playable.

Really about any older game besides Ultima Onilne. Older as in not having broadband as "required" on the box. Also do not pvp. I know many who play EQ2 with dial up, come play with us!

  • KruugarKruugar Member Posts: 43

I don't think there is one...

You wouldn't want PVP since you would lag out and die.

You could play Shadowbane and stay in the safe area maybe? That would defeat the purpose of Shadowbane, but hey, free is free.

Rubies of Eventide was another one with a smaller download I believe.  300megs I think.

My mom lives on a farm , 40 miles from anything , she can get DSL , you have to substation near you. Most unlisted phone companies can help you find one , the lowest tier of DSL right now 132 download / 90 upload , its 8.50  but a 6 month contract.

I d check out Dofus (spelling) I believe its a flash game and its nice. I think its 100 mega or no download. The other option is mobile phone mmorpg / graphic muds. I m not sure how you d find them since most carries only list in them in limited market, and they are one time fee of 10.00.

Some known ones as Lineage 1 , Second Life (i m not sure what its named is , its been released in norway and japan i think). The other possibility is going to wiki and typing in mmorpg list , then look for webbased ones. I believe there are currently 10 left but I m too lazy to look it up.

Marvel Mud , and Ashen Call 1 work on dial up ... I think Marvel Mud needs a telenet client , its found on AOL search engine. Its text based and was fun (I think)

Thanks guys, you really helped me out. I guess i'll just have to wait for another year, get a job and buy myself a laptop with wireless internet. Costs alot but i'll share the bill with my friend who lives close to me. Basiclly I can't play good PvP games with good graphics on Dial-Up, lol.
