I am surprised, because I actually also agree with that list. However, WoW is listed as 1. and 6. In some ways, that makes sense, if you think about it. WoW has features to it that I think are great and awful (e.g., accessibility is a great feature and one reason why WoW is so hugely successful but the graphics leave one wanting more).
How can Planetside be on a list of overhyped failures? The game has never had any real hype and never been advertised. 4 years after release it did get a free trial I suppose
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
So i read an article that talked about a top10 worst mmorpgs ever.It was a USA list and i am not sure if it's mentioned in here allready.I'm not saying if i like or don't like the top10 list i'll just give you guys the names. From number one being the worst and then down.
1.Everquest 2 2.Shadowbane 3.Starwars Galaxies 4.Dungeons and dragons online 5.Anarchy online 6.Planetside 7.The matrix online 8.Asherons call 2 9.The sims online 10.World war II online It's appearantly from a USA gaming magazine and the ratings mostly about the amount fo time and cash it costed to get the mmorpg started and then the subscriptions it had afterwards.
As mentioned if it was posted allready a while back i'msorry i just found out about it.Can't say wich magazine it was since i do not know.
You should probably have Vanguard in the first place.
I would put the list like this:
1. Vanguard
2. The Matrix Online
3. Anarchy Online
4. Asherons Call 2
5. Dungeons & Dragons Online
6. Shadowbane
7. Star Wars Galaxies
8. EverQuest II
I'm not including the others since they are not really MMORPG:s
Edit: changing place with Anarchy Online and The Matrix Online
1. Asherons Call 2 2. Dark and Light 3. Roma Victor 4. Shadowbane 5. The Matrix Online 6. Dungeons and Dragons Online 7. Guild Wars 8. Horizons 9. Vanguard 10.Star Wars Galaxies: (after NGE) - It was a great game prior to that, but the NGE is the only reason it's on the list.
And this list is for Major titles that released. Not this crap like ArchLord or RF Online or some of the other crap asian mmo's. Those are automatically known as crap so they aren't in this list.
Well...there you have it my friends. Just my opinion.
It's appearantly from a USA gaming magazine and the ratings mostly about the amount fo time and cash it costed to get the mmorpg started and then the subscriptions it had afterwards.

I don't agree at all with AO being on the list. It was not that horribly hyped: I was already a heavy gamer at that time and I never heard of it in development. I tend to keep my ear to the grapevine too. It certainly wasn't as hyped up as EQ was. AO also had what was for the time fairly decent player numbers once FC worked out the most major prbs in the game. True that it got bashed by the critics of the time... How much money did FC put into AO's development? I heard it wasn't that much but I don't know what the figure is.
I also would not put Planetside on that list as it was never hyped. EQ2 shouldn't be on the list either. Yes EQ2 didn't net as many players as SoE hoped for, and yes it was hyped a lot, but it enjoys good ratings now and has a decent playerbase.
I agree with those who said VG should be on that list. That was the most over inflated cash cow game ever released and it flopped badly with both critics and players. DnL should be on that list as well seeing as it was really hyped and turned out to be an absolute pita. Wasn't there even something about the company fibbing on number of players and trying to forcefully acquire fanbois in order to put down the critics who were negative towards it? Ragnarok Online should also be on the list since it was really hyped, but went into a prolonged beta, got hacked and its source code made into free versions of the game before it was even released ( I knew some people who had freeshards in RO before its official release). I think that RO was played in its illegal free form by more people than ever played the real game.
WoW and LotRO on the list? No way jose! EvE on the list? Ditto... EvE prolly had one of the smallest budgets ever for its development.
Other games that could make that list: Auto Assault (fairly hyped but didn't make it though it's not a bad game), Horizons, and ArchLord. I don't know enough about Silkroad Online to really state if it was hyped and flopped badly.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
Can only list games ive played. So here we are in no particular order the worst MMORPGs ive played.
Face of Mankind
Rubies of Eventide
World of Pirates
The Matrix Online
Dark and Light
Anarchy Online
RF Online
Saga of Ryzom
And here are the best MMORPGs which held my interest the longest. Regardless why i quit them or what i think of them now, i played them the longest and liked them at one point of another or i wouldnt have put years+ into them.
My top 10, 1 worst, 10 least worst, not including those really small MMO's 1: Dark & Light 2: Realms of Krel/ Mourning 3: Dungeon Runners 4: Savage Eden 5: Tibia 6: Shadowbane 7: Runescape 8: Horizons 9: Star Wars Galaxies - NGE 10: face of mankind
Game, how the heck does D&L beat out Mourning??
At least D&L had some sort of working product, Mourning was purely a scam from beginning to end, and they are still trying to this day.
Also, I have realized that the majority of people adding to this thread have overlooked that the OP listed the ten worst SUBSCRIPTION to COST games, the list has nothing to do with gameplay, merely the amount of subs to th cost of production.
However, I think it has created a good outlet for all to gripe about their most hated titles, so unless the OP says otherwise carry on.

Because I actually liked the "world" in mourning. It had some pretty spots. Sure it was crap..but it was pretty crap (well..sort of)
Because I actually liked the "world" in mourning. It had some pretty spots. Sure it was crap..but it was pretty crap (well..sort of)
Nothing will ever beat Mourning for me, as its very unlikely anyone will ever be able to pull off a 5+ year scam like that again. The fact that they purposefully built the world drastically different merely to scam the industry is enough for them to take the lowest place on any totem pole.
That and they are still out there trying to scam...
top 10 "best" MMORPG's in my opinion.... how does one qualify an MMO to be rated? Fun? That is why we play games yes? Too have fun?
So yeah that's the angle I am going to approach this at. My top 10 most "fun" MMORPGs.
1. UO - Siege Perilous - Shaduwklan! lat oomiez feer da pok'rz ab chop'rz ub da Shaduwklan krimp! (been a while since i tried to speak old school siege perilous orcish sorry) Actually way too many fun UO experiences to ever list. From Siege perilous to Great Lakes and clearing through dungeons with friends, massive Faction PVP, decorating our Guild tower..
2. World of Warcraft - had some really good times in world PVP and some really fun raids. Also met some great people and just had a lot of fun sitting around chatting. The first time through the leveling process was fun and interesting to finally get to level 40 and get a mount, to finally get to level 60 and start the "big boy/girl" content... and the first time a boss went down in a raid was always fun, though the wipes getting there and then repeating it week after week got too boring after TBC.
3. SWG - 5-6 player hunting parties. Nothing like hunting for a while, setting up camp and healing/buffing with music and dance for a while, then heading back out on the hunt. Hanging out in the Cantina chatting with people. The all our wars that would break out when a bunch of Imperials ran into a rebel cantina and started trying to shoot the place up. Good times. Lots of fun exploration too.
4. Earth and Beyond - It was fun to just travel in that game, making money doing trade routes and exploration XP runs... I don't really know why either lol
5. Guild Wars - Fun to hop into a premade level 20 PVP character and go at it for a while, also some of the questing / storyline was fun and entertaining.
6. FFXI was a lot of fun when you actually got into a good party and train killed mobs and really felt like you advanced your character, but too rare of an experience (for me anyway) to keep playing
7. Ragnarok Online - I actually had a really good time playing with my bro and his GF running all around slaughtering hundreds of funny looking mobs, but it was way too boring of a grind to do solo. I really like how you'd level a character to max then start over again as an advanced class, all uber powerful and everything
8. hmm... drawing a blank now....
Yeah I'm not going to hurt myself by thinking too much harder on this haha.
9. Dreaming about playing WAR (I know it's sad)
10. Checking my Beta application status on WAR daily (sometimes more) which is sad too
My top ten worst, 1: SWG:NGE 2: SWG:CU 3: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 4: Auto Assault 5: AO 6: Ragnarok Online 7: DnL 8: EVE 9: Guild Wars 10: DDO Just my personal opinion.
this list is not teh point of thsi post i just wanna comment on it
. EVE does not deserve to be in here teh rest do
my list is
1. world of warcraft
2.guild wars
3. dungeons and dragons online
4.the matrix online
5 the sims online
6.final fantasy 11
7.shadowbane
8.anarchy online
9. ultima online *i just didnt like it i guess but i know youl all disagree*

sorry but that list is waaaaay off eq2 should not be in the ten worst, in fact eq2 is one of the best since its revival by SOE....and games like DnL and VG should be on the list. SWG should be a bit lower (prolly like #8) post NGE. Roma Victor, RF online, Horizons, and a few others i could think of should be on the list
I agree with you. I personally do not like EQ2 but I do accept that it is incredibly popular amongst a surprisingly large group of MMORPGers and it has a good rep amongst the general population.
Meanwhile games like Dark & Light, whose launch was greeted with such anticipation, are hnow judged to have been colossal failures at almost every level.
Originally posted by Meltdown "Top 10 Biggest MMORPG Busts of ALL-TIME!" "Thus I based my list on the MMO Games that failed to live up to their hype or deliver on promised 'feature' list." It's not "Worst mmorpg top 10 list", stop calling it that. And yes for failing to live up to hype he is spot on for most of it, even though these games are better than others out there. They just hyped themselves up way too much.
Not only did the op get the title wrong ("Top 10 Biggest MMORPG Busts of ALL-TIME!"), he also got the order wrong.
I've given up taking advice from this site completely. When I saw EQ2 as #1 I thought there would be a flame fest. But most people agree with it! This being after I heard a whole bunch of statements saying EQ2 was an amazing game just not as popular.
Not to mention everyone here hates WoW and it turned out to be a great game for me.
Never again will I ever take in and consider opinions on this site.

WoW is not that great of a game, but it does have its positive sides. Would never ever want to play it again though, it just sucks completely now that i became more 'experienced'.
As for this site. Most people are complete morons so you're doing yourself a favour for not listening to game advices. heh.
The poll takes into count the cost. EQ2 if you guys remeber took a LOT of money to make. Way more than WoW by a large margin cant remeber the mag. (Maxium PC?) but it broke down the cost of both those MMOs. On release and even now WoW has many more subs along with a number of other games. The poll isnt really just what is the worse game but more of a success poll. EQ2 is number one because it cost so much to make and keep running and the subs just dont add up. The problem was that if you remeber EQ2 thought they could bank on the name and people still wanted pve based games. The biggest difference between WoW and EQ2 released at almost the same time. PvP WoW had it and EQ2 didnt there for WoW did better its that simple. EQ2 tried to make up for it later on by releasing PvP but as we all know now its to late.
If a game is going to do well in the modern market it better have a PvP system of some kind EQ2, LoTRO, and D&D found that out the hard way. Im sorry for all you pve guys but its a thing of the past if people want pve they will play games like Oblivian, Bioshock ect dont have to pay $15 a month to pve. Now you offer a good PvP system with competition for players you bet they will pay $15 to E-sport it up! Thats the truth like it or not.
Just watch WAR vs AoC. WAR pvp focused game and AoC pve focused just watch WAR will make AoC look like a fart in the wind.
i can honestly say i thought WoW was the worst pice of crap to ever be released upon our green earth it has no depth the graphics are almost cell shaded*which i am conviced are just lazy not good but thats a whole nuther rant about wind waker* and when i was able to make lvl 40 in 2 days all i could think was "screw this too easy" and i moved onto better games like lineage 2 and eve online. now i have played just about every p2p mmo on the market at least once and i must say WoW deserves to be destroyed for what its doing to gamers everywhere and i hope everyone will cover me on this that we should boycot this stupidity so that we dont get anymore idiots saying how l33t they are with there lvl 70 newb ganker
