WoW or Guild Wars- Please Help!

I have played a couple trial WoW accounts but nothing on Guild Wars.

Please help me! I am trying to decide whether to play GW or WOW. Please let me remind you that I am not asking which one is your favorite. But instead which one is better for me. I would also like a well thought out short explanation why you picked which one you did, not just a "WOW FTW!!" or "GW noob stupid question". Thanks. Im gonna explain what kind of MMORPG I am looking for.

Skill vs Luck:

There is no MMORPG that is all skill and no luck, but im looking for the one that takes the most skill, and the one that is the most challenging. I wnat to be challenged, not just play through the game knowing ill be top level pretty soon.

Quests:

I LOVE Quests. But...it gets old....deliver blah blah blah to blah blah blah, kill blah blah lbah and bring back blah blah blah. You know what I mean. Of course, there will always be Quests like that but it gets old when every single one is that way. I also like a good storyline in MMORPG's.

Community:

I could have just played a regular RPG, but its the social aspect of MMORPG's that makes it so popular. I want one with a good and helpful community. Not everyone is that way, but certain games have certain types of communities.

Graphics:

I already know that GW has better graphics, but I knew that someone would mention it if I didnt put it in here.

MMORPG Type:

Im the kind of gamer who wants I think people call it like the "sandbox" MMORPG Type. The kind where your basicly doing what you feel like doing with little direction or guidence. Im not sure if either of these games are really that type (WOW doesnt really seem like it) but Id like the closest to it.

Thanks!

Guild wars is less of a sandbox than WOW.

As everything... EVERYTHING is instanced, except the trade areas.

Just with my own personal experience I had a blast in GW.  With WoW I can never play for very long without getting bored.

first i would say this: I dont play Wow anymore, but i did. same with Guildwars. so im not looking better at 1 game because i find it fun atm, because im done with both games. so the things im saying is somewhat neutral and really what i think.

    1.Skill vs Luck:

There is no MMORPG that is all skill and no luck, but im looking for the one that takes the most skill, and the one that is the most challenging. I wnat to be challenged, not just play through the game knowing ill be top level pretty soon.

i would say GuildWars 100%, there is not anything u gotta think about, its all clear! (im not saying wow aint taking skills) but GuildWars is ALL about skills, everyone got same items same lvl's and same "spells", so what make 1 team better from the other? skills. its what its all about, in pvp at least., and dont get me wrong pve also takes "skills", but ey? we are talking about AI here.

    2.Quests:

I LOVE Quests. But...it gets old....deliver blah blah blah to blah blah blah, kill blah blah lbah and bring back blah blah blah. You know what I mean. Of course, there will always be Quests like that but it gets old when every single one is that way. I also like a good storyline in MMORPG's.

storyline, well wow have a pretty solid one i think, its quite nice and go's really deep, if u got the time to read what the npc's say and such. now guildwars has a somewhat more poor storyline, but is easy to forllow and dont take much time at all.

    3.Community:

I could have just played a regular RPG, but its the social aspect of MMORPG's that makes it so popular. I want one with a good and helpful community. Not everyone is that way, but certain games have certain types of communities.

no doubt here for me, WoW's community is ALOT better, guildwars community is really bad imo. enough said.

    4.Graphics:

I already know that GW has better graphics, but I knew that someone would mention it if I didnt put it in here.

    5.MMORPG Type:

Im the kind of gamer who wants I think people call it like the "sandbox" MMORPG Type. The kind where your basicly doing what you feel like doing with little direction or guidence. Im not sure if either of these games are really that type (WOW doesnt really seem like it) but Id like the closest to it.

WoW: its a huge world, ur really free and u can do a ton of stuff, all sort of small things, once u get near the end its all getting old and u prolly wont do much more then arena battle's (pvp) and raid 4 3-7 days a week. and not to forget some daily quests witch means they are repeatable - also boring in the long run, but good money.

    Guildwars

i split pvp and pve because there dont really have anything to do with eachother.

pve: well, u cant do much other then fight, do mission and quests, there is also "raid" aka, Elite missions, and when ur done with the campaign u will be able to take the mission at hard mode. cant tell much detailed about it, as i never really took a deep look into it. tho i played GW abit over a year.

    pvp:

u can walk right into the game, and be max lvl's unlocks skills though wins and such, play 4on4 - 8on8 - 12vs12. anyway, i dont wanna go much into details here, because i could go on forever, but its the most skill based "mmorpg" i ever played! no doubt about that. - no need to make a char and lvl him, u can play just as good as any pve-char  can in pvp. and ofc one of the most importend things, there is GVG... GuildVsGuild, witch is 8on8. teamwork > everything.

My last word would be, dont give up on it... its really hard to get into because there is like1300+ skills, so its not easy to learn fast..

my vote was: Guildwars, and that is because u wont find another game like guildwars, but u will find 100 others like WoW.

I haven't played GW, but I would suggest you play it instead of WoW since Skill vs. Luck is so important to you and questing needs to be spot on.  Sounds to me like you'll get bored of WoW after a few minutes of playing.

As you may know, GW and WoW are not very alike. Actually they've got nothing to do with each other. I've played Wow on trial and didn't find it appealing enough to make me subscribe, GW though, I played on a friends account one day, between it's release in April/May 2005 (never remember the exact month) and decided to get myself a CD-Key for having my own account. there after I bought both chapters that followed the 1st (Prophecies), Factions and Nightfall, and at each chapter I found still new features that would make me stick to the game for over uninterrupted months. With factions came all the Alliance Battle stuff, and faction missions, with nf came the hero stuff and the highly improved NPC AI. And also there's the title stuff, achievements you may get (mostly on PvE) that will be used as rewards in someway in Guild Wars 2.

I kind of fear the Guild Wars 2 will loose some of it's appeal but that's not under discussion here.

One of my favorite points about GW is TIME. I don't know about you but I don't play MMOs all day long, and for a subscription game this is a waste of money which I already do with D&DO. SO Even though I may spend long times of absence at GW, I am sure I won't have to sign up again for playing it when I decide to go back and I am sure everything I've achieved will still be there, no matter how long I stay inactive.

The community IS a problem indeed. If you're playing PvE you'd rather make some friends for doing it. Even though with the hero stuff things got lot easier, it's still easier to go with real ppl, and there are really some assholes playing that as if it were a matter of life or death, and they tend to be quite rude with starters. GW takes a while to get used to, it IS a game based MOSTLY on skills, but not only your char skills, but you own skills as well. It will take time until you learn to vary your skills to make the "build" usefull for what your doing, pve/pvp. you can find sites which give away some tested builds but it's not the same as making you OWN build and see how it works (or not), change it according to what you are planing, see how it affects on group playing, and unless you find a friend to help you out, this may take a while and you may get pissed at ppl that treat the game as a way of life, instead of fun.

For PvPing you may just join the parties and have fun. (I highly recommend buying at least one of the PvP packages also if your going straight to PvP for the starting skills has a few build limitations that may give you a hard time at first)

If you diced to buy GW, I'd say you buy the platinum edition, that is to be released with the xpack Eye of the North, before and if you like it, there after buy both other chapters aswell, it is worth it.

I find the storyline of Prophecies far more involving than that of Factions and Nightfall, so I recommend playing it through. Factions and Nightfall story lines are not bad, but it seems to me faction plot was made up in a hurry, nf though is a bit better, but still the first one owns it.

As has been said before you may find hundreds of games like WoW but I am yet to find a game like GW, so this means my vote goes for GW.

If you're not going for GW i recommend you go for free trials of the most played MMORPGs before subscribing to any. At that point I'd say, try for WoW yes, but also try D&D Online, Lord of The Rings (pretty neat one, loved this game), City of Heroes is fun but not my kind of plot, Matrix Online is a bit outdated but it's wortha try if you come across any trial, and Star Wars Galaxies, well, it can be fun, but it has seen better days.

You may also go for Free2Play MMOs, like Sword of the New World, Fly For Fun and Tales of Pirates, Space Cowboy, Rapplez, there are other ones around but these are the only F2P I've played so far.

    Best of luck,

    Fare you well.

As for what you are looking for in a game, I would say that Guild Wars is definitely it.  Being competetive in PvP takes much more skill in Guild Wars than in WoW.   The only thing you will be disappointed in is the community.  I have played many MMO's, spent probably about a year in GW and have to say that hands down it is one of the worst communities in any MMO I have played.   I have however found a great guild that I have been playing with for almost 6 months.   It is like finding a needle in a haystack though.

I have decided to do both. Since GW doesnt need a monthly subscribtion u just buy it once. If I decide I like one but not the other then I will quit one, thanks for all your opinions though.
