I'm in a hurry and didn't read the replies, if this has already been said just ignore me. OP, seen Acclaim's Top Secret? They're hiring talented people at the end of that. I'd say that's a pretty good shot. And if some of your ideas make it into their final game, you can use that on your resume. You might want to look into it.
Well that's a crock of crap. There is no way possible I can make my number one dream come true: creating an mmo. Let me start off by stating that I'm almost 30 and have 10 years of mmo playing experience. I'm not a 13 year old kid fantisizing about making a video game. I know what mmo'ers want in a game. I have literally hundreds of "reasonable" ideas that when strung together would both blow players minds and bring the mmo world back from the crypts. The only experience I have is reading about what mmo'ers have wanted for almost 10 years on forums. I have no programming or art experience, so I'll never be taken seriously. I wouldn't even know where to start if I wanted to even attempt to create a game. All I have is an 80 page notebook filled with ideas that would take an mmo to the next level, and a dream. I guess I'll just leave the game creating to the devs with experience; the unoriginal teams out there that are hard at work creating the next wow clone. So to all my former teachers and my parents who always told me that nothing is impossible; I say up yours. Try to create an mmo.
There is no way?
You are either limitted in thinking or just too damn lazy to go to school and work your way up the ladder.
See you can do anything you want to, you really can but it takes your grit and will to do it. The "good life" fairy doesn't exist.
You need to go to school if you want to make the "perfect" game, so perhaps if your dream is the ultimate mmo...get off your ass and go get some schooling.
Stop playing games.
There guide-line to making your dream come true. Takes alot of time but if it's really something you want then you'll do it.
I'd like to disagree. I set my mind to creating my own studio and, low and behold, I have it. I'm learning programming, and have 0 artistic talent... I can't even draw stickmen very well. Not only do I have my own studio making a SP/MP game, but because I kept at it after I accomplished this task, I also got the funding to make my own engine and tools as well! IN ADDITION:
I've been approached about making a MMO by said investors. They came to me, not vice versa.
If you truely put your mind to it, you can accomplish it. You obviously haven't put enough of yourself into your goal, otherwise you'd still be at it. Don't give up, if you give up then your mind was obviously not put towards it... in which case it's good that you didn't start the project to begin with.
We don't always see eye to eye but I have to say CG is completely right, proven by his recent success.
What you need more than anything right now, is to put all the free time you have into learning anything you can. This includes, History, Sociology, Psychology, Geology, Geography, Core Sciences, Mathematics, Programming, Theology, Management, Critical Thought, AI and a plethora of other subjects. While doing this try to find like minded individuals, in which case I am one.
I personally wouldn't go to school at my age, for me it would be more hindering than helpful. I learn on my own, try to improve daily, and make detailed plans for the future.
Don't listen to quotes like this,

If you put your mind to it, work hard, and surround yourself with talented, honest, and dedicated individuals, you will certainly blow this industry away. It honestly wouldn't take much to do so right now.

Oh yeah, I rule. I think it's payweek... isn't it? it's all blury like and I'm not sure. Did I already do payroll? What day is it? *screams, aneurism, coma*

Hey, that's still true. I'm fending off the MMO development for now... I've put up a really good fight involving costs and continued development and chance of return with the recent news headlines of multiple failing MMOs... very convincing arguement. Keeping in mind I've been on a Professional MMO Dev Team, I'd rather not go back just yet.
So I stick by that statement.

NOTE im NOT trying to be rude or anything...just trying to keep it "real"
every gamer and their mother has ideas be it fps/rts/mmo`s etc...
but reality is....you WONT get far with just ideas you need more buy some books / get back in collage and learn some programming / drawing / modeling...its never to late so dont think that your to old for it etc...when your done do NOT think that you automatically will be hired by some mmo company
start out small you DONT have to start out with a mmo...as you may already know...developing a mmo costs A LOT of money
try to get yourself hired by a company that works on SMALL projects...be it rpg/fps/whatever you like
the OP is obviously wrong there is a guy who is a millionaire living a great life far beyond that of an average person or even a lawyer just by selling pet rocks dude.... You can do anything you put your mind to and actually put 110% effort and never give up most ppl expect someth ing big to spark right away.
Oh yeah instantly i'm gonna be a game developer with no school degree's and a notebook of idea's. If the OP was serious about this he would start up school. I'ts never to late to start school.
well, you could always take your envisioned system and create a pen/paper game out of it to see if the games classes/skills/etc hold water. submit this to a forum of people who share the same interests. Take it to dragon con or any other game con/local game shop and play the game at a table/room. its not that hard to get a group of people together for a couple hours.
if your serious about doing it, you might want to join a community for this. theres numerous independant MMO designers and a large underground network of people with the same ideas as you (not literal ideas, but with the same aspirations)
at least this way you'll know what your up against a little better and maybe meet people who might be willing to help you with your idea. game companies dont spring from one mans effort and just putting out classified ads for programmers and artists. usually its a collaboration of ideas with multiple people who have met each other long before the project is even written out on paper.
my point is, if you really want to do this get involved with a forum/community of people with the same dream. learn from their mistakes, listen to their wisdom, meet friends and future partners.
oh, and if you want to be creator. .youd be better off with a business degree than some of these half-baked "game creator" degrees. At least if you dont succeed you can apply that in other fields.. its universal. Art doesnt require a degree, it requires a portfolio.
some people have the impression that if they can model and render then they can create an MMO and manage it. Thats grunt work.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
sounds to me like you arnt truly setting your mind to it. if you truly want to make your ideas a reality show it to some gaming companies or somthin. once you clear your mind of negative thoughts you will start to think clearer and have more common sense.
Hey, Allhollows, if you're still out there, why don't you post a brief outline of what your MMO idea is to give gamers here a chance to see what they think. I mean if you have 80 pages, you must have put a lot of time and thought into it and if the response is positive, you will know whether or not it's worth pursuing.

Go check Hero's journey, they hire folks to create content for the game. Some of the folks they hired are paid, but some are hired as volunteers.
Might be worth checking into.
