I played EQ2 from release and then left to play LOTRO from beta until about a month ago (I went with the founder's lifetime plan). While LOTRO is a decent game, it just got very boring for me around the late 20's. I tried a bunch of different characters as well, but it just didn't work. I went back to EQ2, and have been having a ton of fun starting new characters and waiting for the new expansion. There is no doubt that the early game in EQ2 is far superior to the early game in LOTRO. I can't compare the end game (40+) since I never reached there in LOTRO. Maybe in a year or so I will try it again. If you are starting out on EQ2, take your time and try some of the signature-type quests. They can be a lot of fun.
Same here. Though I left earlier to play Vanguard...yikes. I loved LoTRO from the start. I was totally sucked in, and like you I bought the lifetime sub. I ended up regretting that though.
I grew bored with LoTRO as I progressed, and tried making alts to keep it fresh. That didn't work for me. With very few adventuring options per level tier, I was repeating the same content over and over again, along with the epic quest line. After a while I would log in, look at my champ, log out, log back in with my hunter, look at him, log out, log back in with my captain, and I just couldn't get myself to do anything. So I returned to EQ2, and I've been very pleased with that decision.
The amount of content, classes, and races available to me, allow me to have very distinct experiences with the game. I'm now eagerly looking forward to the next expansion which hits in November.
As for the comments someone else made about SOE charging for content, I'd have to say that's not entirely true. They've always had updates that come almost monthly. Those updates on occasion bring new quests. They also have seasonal content that's free, much like Turbine does. While they have charged for adventure packs, they have scrapped that model.
I think Turbine is great about giving free content, though I would expect them to charge when it comes time to a "real" expansion. I recall Jeff...I think it was him, mentioning something around those lines.
EQ2's expansions have been huge, and you have to expect them to charge for those. Now the adventure packs, I would agree those could have been, and probably should have been free.
Bottom line, download the free trial. The best way to find out if a game is for you is to test drive it.
lower population, clunkier graphics engine, lower draw distance for the world graphics . Otherwise they play about the same. Do quests get gear so you can kill higher level mobs, rinse and repeat.
Do quests, get gear so you can kill higher level mobs, rinse and repeat. This is how alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll MMOS are these days......
Jackdog, don't be an idiot. Every game charges for expansions. You know this, so why are you making such ridiculous accusations? As for the updates, they don't charge for that, they just do it. Where do you think things like additional quests, changes in quests, changes in recipe books, etc come from? They've pretty much completely revamped crafting, for instance. That stuff didn't come in expansions, it came as normal every day updates. As for fanboi, I don't call you that so how about you take the adult road and not call me that? Its called "being polite". I've played this game almost since the day it opened. I know exactly what its gone through. You on the other hand don't like the game and came here specifically to bash it. So why are you here? I don't go to the LOTRO forums to bash LOTRO even though I think its just as bad as WoW, so why are you here?
Now now Moire where did I call you a fanboi, I said I had more experiance in EQII than some of the fanbois here. I don't see me singling out you or calling anyone in particular a fanbois. If the fanbois shoe fits then feel free to wear it otherwise ignore it. On the other hand you feel the need to call me a idiot? Hmmmm bit of a hypocrite there I would think.
Secondly I simply pointed out that Turbine adding large content updates every 2 months and so far at least the first three will be at no additional charge other than the normal subscription fee. On the other hand SOE charges for "adventure packs" such as Splitpaw, Bloodline and Fallen dynasty which were pretty much the equivelant to Lotro's Book 9 content addition . How is that ridiculous?
For other posters How exactly am I bashing EQII in any way whatsoever? What I really hope that maybe SOE will see the light and start treating the it's customers with the same respect that Turbine does the LoTRO customers and quit charging for content additions. Maybe re optimize their graphics engine to make the game run a bit better on mid range boxes ( not a problem for me, I run a small beast ) and possibly merge some servers in order to give the new players to the game a better experiance. I consider this constructive criticism, not bashing.
In my opinion both games have good and bad points, but that is for another topic.
What am i going to find in everquest 2 that is not in lotro!
Please express as many idea's as possible!
Thanks in advance
Just my opinion on some of the things you will find in EQ2 that is not in LOTRO:
1. Crafting is more useful and enjoyable (at least for me)
2. Housing (although LOTRO will have this in a couple months)
3. More armor options available for purchase. Don't need to complete quests as your only means for nice armor.
4. Zoning (not seamless like LOTRO) and higher graphics, so it runs rougher on older systems..
5. Money sinks aren't quite as high (armor repair and auction house fees more reasonable)
6. Some dungeons can be done with small, non-optimal groups (Husband and I could duo certain dungeons and get some pretty nice upgrades this route. Were unable to do this in LOTRO)
7. With harbor bells and griffons, travel times a bit speedier than LOTRO horse routes.
8. Not quite as easy to find groups in EQ2 as you currently can in LOTRO
I spent a year in EQ2 and played LOTRO from beta up until last week, so these are just a few things that stood out to me. I think both games have good and bad points. I never liked EQ2 character models, but others love them. But overall, for my play style, EQ2 was just a bit friendlier. Give it a go and see what you think. Have fun
1. My level 50 minstrel is wearing mostly crafted armor, nuff said
2. LoTRo's hosuing will be in instanced neighborhoods. You will have a real house and will be able to customize it inside and out. Not just a coomon door leading to a instanced apartment/house
3. See number 1
4. LoTRO has lower system requirements than EQII and hasds prettier world graphics to boot, damn if I knowe how they managed it but they did.
5. agreed
6.also agree
7.agree
8. lower levels it is much easier to find groups in LoTRO, high levels are about the same in my opinion.
agree with the last paragraph except I find LoTRO better probably because most of my EQII guild transferred over since we were bored of EQII . Most of us had 3 or more years in EQII, anything gets old after a while. If our guild had voted to stay in EQII I would probably still be playing EQII.

In my opinion both games have good and bad points, but that is for another topic.
Server mergers aren't necessary. The upper tiers are filled with many players, and grouping isn't an issue. Heck the game has loads of guilds people can join to boot. The level game will be sparse on most servers, even with a merge. Simply because this isn't a new game anymore. Heck even in LoTRO we were already seeing signs on some servers of empty newbie areas. The dwarven starting area was all but barren on my server. That will always be true for EVERY mmo that's no longer "new".
As for the graphics of the game. I just can't see EQ2 as having poor graphics. Running the game on the highest or second to highest settings, it looks amazing. The armor quality looks light years better than what lotro has. Now don't get me started on how the armor colors match...that's a different story entirely. EQ2 really needs armor tinting...but at least for the near future they're introducing new slots so that players can make their mismatching armor look decent.
As for the look of characters and mobs, I'd give it to EQ2 hands down....with the exception of a few models in lotro. The warg, especially it's movements in lotro, in the high settings, looks incredible. But in EQ2 most mobs...in high settings are simply awesome to behold. While there is GREAT detail in lotros player models, they are extremely limited in how you can customize them. Take the humans for instance. Every single human mail looks like they're related to agent moulder (sp?) from the xfiles. While the environment is top notch, and I'll give that nod happily to lotro, there are some regions that don't look...well...right. For instance the snowy areas, lack the extreme detail that the forest and swamp areas have. The trees look like they came from WoW. Heck that was one of the reasons I failed to get some friends to play the game with me.
EQ2 is under going a skeletal revamp, which should make future character models look much better than they do. But again, the npc's, and armor are absolutely incredible in the high settings of EQ2. Role a character that starts in Neriak, and bump up your graphics to max. Look at that killer armor that the guards wear. That's jaw dropping stuff. Look at the wargs and the blue flame around them, and the drool that falls from their mouths...that's serious detail.
I think the graphics are better in EQ2. The Hobbits in LOTRO run like they're wearing a messy diaper that they're trying to keep away from their butt, something you'll never see in the Halflings or Gnomes of EQ2..
hahahahaha Thats awesome, i literally laughed out loud and my coworkers stood up from their cubes and looked at me funny

Well... it's not ridiculous... it just does not make sense IMO. Those AP are optional. You don't need them at the moment. Why would you want those anyways when you can get teh base game and 3 xp for 39$?
LOTRO books were needed. That`s why it is part of the subscription. Like most MMOs that get released, it was non complete. Sure, it was polished as hell, but lacking content.

yeah you are worng or misinterpreting the point. The point being is that SOE charges for every content addition from small ones such as the splitpaw and Bloodlines ones all the way up to the larger such as the FAE and KoS. Turbine has gave us 2 content additions with our normal fee now and the third which will also be free is due in November.
Also can you provide me with a link to wherever you can get the core game and 3 XP's for $39. You have to buy the core game for 20 bucks then buy each expasion seperatly . Desert of Flames is 30 bucks, Kingdom of the sky another 30 bucks, Echos of Faydar is 40 at the SOE store. That's 120 bucks just for the game right there. And Kunark is coming in November so that will be another 40. Add in the 15 bucks a month fee and SOE is picking your pocket left and right in my opinion. I paid 50 for LoTRO and another 200 for the lifetime sub, and books 9 , 10, and 11 are free at least. Thank god Turbine came along with LoTRO or I would probably still be fianancing Smed's new sports car.
Also I never said EQII had bad graphics, just the world draw view sucks even at max quality it sucks. The animations are the best of any game I have ever played however. Start adding in shadows and unless you have a top of the line rig ( core duo and 8800 or equivelent ), expect stuttering and crashes.

Neriak and Nektolus was free. I haven`t paid extra for it. And like i`m saying... for the 100 times, LOTRO needed those books... It makes the game feels more complete. Link, sure... again (i think i mentionned the website at least 4 times as of now....) www.direct2drive.com
But we get it Jackdog... SOE sucks and your cool because you don't like them.
Oh and the EOF box can be gotten from Amazon for as little as $35 USD. Screw SOE
SOE does not have a 120$ package. You are making that up. Buying everything for teh ground up from SOE would be foolish and i don`t recall anyone stating that it should be bought from SOE store.

I am not making shit up Matrique add the numbers up on the SOE store. EQII basic package and the three expansioons would be 120 bucks. They should have a package with the basic game and the three expansions for like 30 bucks but noooooooo. It's all ala carte at the Station Storegotta buy the coerew game and each expansion serperatly. Since you can rarely find the game even in the bargain bins any more people will get sucked into buying it at the station and drop 120 skins in this tired old horse. EB games no longer even sells the EOF box, but they still sell Vanguard. I did find it at Amazon though for as little as 35 so if anyone really want to play the game that would be the best palce to get it. Yeah EQII is a real popular game isn't it.Shit SOE should give the core client and 3 expansions away for free for that matter, thats about all it is worth now.

You created a package that did not exist on SOE store. Of course if you do the math it adds up to 120$, we aren't crazy.
Just so you know, EoF is in the top selling games on direct2drive. Not bad for a dying game that no one wants to play. They even have EQ1 in there.
I don't know whats your point anyways...
We get it, SOE is evil and Smed is... hmm... questionable...

Way to keep missing a point dude. I never said they had a package, I said they should have one. D2D has a compilation package fpr 40 USD with the core games and 3 expansions, if you can find the EOF in the bargain bin at Walmart it includes the core game and the other 2 expansions so why does the SOE store make you buy each seperate which would run you 120 USD. Which brings me back to the point I was making that Turbine has included all of it's content updates in LoTRO with no additional charge, while SOE tends to nickle and dime it's customers every chance it gets.
Not meaning to derail but since you brought up EQ1, I just went to Walmarts site and they have EQ and EQ Prophecy of Ro but no EQII products. I wonder if EQ1 is more popular than EQII now?
EQ1 is a far better game then EQ2 if it wasnt for the graphics. EQ2 is just watered down for the casual community who whined in the first months of EQ2 hence they needed to rebuild the combat and the crafting system so every paying idiot could do it. Thank god for ebay and selling my two accounts. At least i made money from sony instead spending it.

Why do you care anyways? Sure, let's tell SOE that they should have the same EQ2 package that D2D have... It does not matter the game is out there and people DONT HAVE TO BUY IT FROM THE SOE STORE. Thats my point. Sure, they could have it... but when we get asked whre to get teh game, we say www.direct2drive.com (and there is a lot of that lately).
As for LOTRO (i'm already done with it btw... can't stand it sorry... maybe it's because EQ2 has more to offer... not completly sure). LOTRO got release unfinished (like all mmos) and NEEDED that content... THere is nothing wrong there. Don't come here crying when Turbine charges you for it's first expension. You know it will happens if the game can keep up (expension are good to re-release a game).

What the heck jack dog, why do you keep coming to this forum to troll flame the game... and offer "facts" which are just loosly based opinions of your own accord.
You have NO CLUE if LOTRO will do these updates free of charge. The game has only been out for 5 months, expansions usually happen a year post launch. Patching the game and adding features that were in the original design document may seem like a huge deal to offer free, but thats a given, SOE, Turbine, Mythic, Sigil, Blizzard, CCP, all do the same update model with releasing games. I bet 3 years down the road with LOTRO and they have 3-4 expansions, the price comparison will be the same. That is if it doesnt end up like another AC2 or DDO,
Turbine's games record - Wins: 1 Loses: 2 Still working: 1
Ohh P.S.
1. Buy the game in retail (Gamestop, Walmart, etc) Buy EOF for 39.99 and get 3 years worth of updates and expansions
2. Buy the game digitally from D2D or other sites of that nature and get the same EOF package with 3 years worth of updates and expansions.
3. Buy the game digitally from SOE store and buy all the expansions seperate. Why they do not offer 1 bundle and 1 each individual I'm not sure. I can see why they offer indivual expansion packs just because if you already have the game just buying the expansion pack is what you need, not an entirely new game account key (which is what package gives you). They are just simply good businessmen, like it or hate it, they resemble M$ in a way, but "I AM" cool with that... call me crazy

Do quests, get gear so you can kill higher level mobs, rinse and repeat. This is how alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll MMOS are these days......
I miss DAoC

Look at the wargs and the blue flame around them, and the drool that falls from their mouths...that's serious detail.
hahahahaha Thats awesome, i literally laughed out loud and my coworkers stood up from their cubes and looked at me funny

Well... it's not ridiculous... it just does not make sense IMO.

Of course if you do the math it adds up to 120$, we aren't crazy.Just so you know, EoF is in the top selling games on direct2drive. Not bad for a dying game that no one wants to play. They even have EQ1 in there.
I don't know whats your point anyways...
We get it, SOE is evil and Smed is... hmm... questionable...
Happy?
