I am thinking about starting up WoW again. I've done the PvE thing from 1-60 and it was fun and all. I have been considering a PvP server this go 'round. Given there are so many of those servers, there has to be something really interesting there. Can you all enlighten me on the positive and negative aspects of life on a WoW PvP server? Thanks in advance.

as far as i know the main ones are...
negative:
- getting ganked/being corpse camped/killed just after finishing a mob by higher level charachters.
- being unable to call for backup if you are new to the server.
- once you get to high enough levels to kill lowbies/mid level chars you are most likely killing someone's alt and they may come after you with their main.
positive:
-being able to gank lower level players once you're high enough.
In my opinion PvP servers can be a lot of fun some of the time, eg. fighting off the opposing faction while questing in STV. it definately gets the blood going when you're attacked. On the other hand, world PvP is dead besides quest/grind spots but it might vary server to server. Also, it can be incredibly frustrating being killed by higher level chars/getting 1 hitted out of nowhere.
Really the only difference between a pve server and pvp server is you get ganked while trying to level up and you get to gank lower level while they try and level up. It really is a joke lol..

Heh heh, look at the jaded people that played to level 35, lost a few PvP fights, and think they know what the game is all about. I especially love the single "positive" point of the first reply being "you can gank people lower level than you", it's just typical of someone who isn't very skilled at these kind of games.
You can and will be able to kill players higher level than you if you know what you're doing and the situation is right. I'm not anything special in PvP but I've defeated players several levels higher than me simply because they weren't prepared or weren't very good. PvE fights are typically short and if you're not aware of your surroundings then getting ganked is a failure on your part. If you do get ganked then the revenge mechanic comes into play, which is satisfying and compelling.
World PvP is about denying people access to areas, this is your turf. And maybe you're outnumbered, well, tough shit - this isn't duelling, it's PvP. It's about bragging rights, and despite what the people that really just need to l2p say, most of the time high level characters ganking are not an issue. When levelling my priest I encountered high level gankers, perhaps once a week, if I was playing every day, and never did they bother to kill me repeatedly.
Well I've never played on a PvE server but I don't understand how the PvP objectives in world PvP would work. Capturing the towers in outland for example is very good fun, and when people die they drop tokens which can be turned in for rewards. If you hold the towers you prevent other people from doing the daily PvP quests there, and earn more marks for each kill defending it.
Even with a mob on you, it's still possible to kill a ganker and I've done this many times. Many people that come to a PvP server expect to be able to grind constantly with under 50% health or no mana and wonder why they get ganked, it's because they don't belong on a PvP server.
Most of the people that complain about PvP completely miss the point. The combat is fun, it's a battle of using your abilities at the right time. Every class has some kind of crowd control or counter ability, for example priests can dispel, paladins can prevent casters casting, and so on and so forth - but only if done at the right moment. What use is a 4 second silence if you've used it too late?
Ok, so PvP isn't for everyone, but those calling it pointless and boring simply do not get it, at all. And that's fine, I don't get Backgammon but I don't say things "LOL TEH BACKGAMMON IS POINTLESS", PLAY A REAL GAME LIKE CHESS LMAO!!"
I honestly think that most critics just aren't cut out for PvP, or understand it at all. If you want balance and never see a player that's stronger than you, play counterstrike. This is a roleplaying game, just like PvE has mobs you need to level up to beat, so does PvP. That's the entire point, and you guys just miss it, or whine because you got ganked. Seriously ---> Hello Kitty Online that way.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
Right because we all know there is so much world pvp going on in WoW pvp servers. I mean SW/IF/ you name the big city it is a open pvp war every night. People dont do BGs/Arenas anymore in fact I dont think anyone ever did. Fact is there isnt much of a difference between the servers at all and if you cant admit that than your just a fanboi I WFTPOWNER pVP LAwL!1!11!
Sorry but when people say there is no point to WoW pvp they mean that you dont win or lose anything when you pvp. When you die in pvp in order to get mana back then there is no point (people do it all the time). What happens when you win AV/WSG/AB/EoTS does it effect the game or world in any way? Do you move closer to a world objective? What happens when you die in open pvp? Do you lose xp or drop your armor?
Now if you want to talk about pvp then dont act like your some great pvper because you pvp in WoW lol. Oh you play capture the flag, king of the hill, race to the end kill X sides boss and get in line for the next one. Now go pvp and when you die you drop that EPIX armor you have and lose 5% xp everytime you die I bet you wont be a pvper at all but we could find you in any number of safe zones or instances to stay safe.
Sure WoW is fun to a point but it is pointless there is no ifs ands or buts about it sorry. I play it for the good old fun of pvp but I never think Im some great pvp because I know and can admit that the game really doesnt take a lot of skill to play.

PvP servers are fun in theory and can be fun, it is risky to quest and what not. I have a level 29 horde alt in a pvp server that I dont play much anymore but regardless to say I see people level "??" which means they are at least 10 levels higher going after me, and I don't know why someone would be such a coward to attack someone not even half their level. You will see alot of that going on, something about people getting off of killing low low level lowbies I never understand but there is alot of that going on in pvp servers.
Other than that they are pretty fun, world pvping is fun, when you dont get ganked by a level 70 but if you are battling people around your level range it is fun indeed.

I keep a level 37 Hunter parked in Stranglethorn vale just to PvP, a few guildies do too and we harass the horde town and after a while some nice PvP springs up with 20 or more players.. its good fun.
Grinding in SV in a PVP server reminds me everyday why I hate alliance ... aka it's fun ...
Fair enough i didnt really put much thought into my post, i just wanted to give him a quick outline instead of a wall of eyebleeding text.
I realise it puts me across as someone who just camps people lower than me which isnt true. However, there's nothing wrong with killing people lower level than you. It's a PvP server, and you'd be foolish to think you wont get killed just because you are a low level.
Directed at sarechasm: I recommend going PvP. In my opinion it is more fun and although it can be hard work/frustrating (for all the reasons given in this thread) it gives another dimension to the game. It can also be funny/interesting at all times when grinding. For example, trying to communicate some sort of peace treaty only to see them get 1 shot by a hunter just around the corner.
I leveled my first char on a PvE server but after spending some time at the level cap i started to really enjoy PvP and it sucked being restriced to BGs, so i rerolled.
roll PVE server
More players (usually) and no fear of ganking when all you want to do is level
There is PLENTY of fun and interesting PVP to be had, in BGs and in the open world, on a PVE server you just get to chose to participate unlike a PVP server.
Just type /pvp and you'll turn on your PVP "flag" and thus be attackable by enemy players.
Hang out in the world PVP areas of Outland and high level Azeroth zones and you'll get plenty of action.
WoW PVP has a lot of problems, it's too gear dependant and too dependant on level.
Yes, sometimes a lower level can beat a higher level, but rarely. It depends on what class you are, what class they are, how big the level difference is, etc.
If the other player's level is listed as ?? you won't win. Period. Been playing WoW since the first week it was out, started on a PVP server, done plenty of PVP on the PVE servers too.
I'd rather have choices then be forced into anything.
But, usually everyone who PVPs on both PVP and PVE servers does it in battlegrounds and the Arena. If you want epic world PVP, wait for AoC, WAR, or sacrifice 6 months of your life and play Lineage II, or go old school and get DaoC
Just my opinion..
Say you're running around in Desolace thinking you have the whole map to yourself, and you see someone from the opposing faction approaching from the distance.
You say:
Will he, or won't he?
Or more importantly...
Will I, or won't I?
That's good stuff.
Oh, yes, the ganking does happen, but not nearly as often as people tend to think.
To anybody trying to say PvE servers and PvP servers are similar, play on Mal'Ganis. It's very clear you play on a PvE server and are trying to cover up the fact that you play a game called WARcraft, on a little lawyer ball server. It's essentially battlegrounds all over. While there are some places that people aren't around, there's places like Hillsbrad and Plaguelands. Nonstop PvP. It was even crazier pre-xpack, since all the population was there. On Mal'Ganis, level doesn't stop people from attacking you either. Lowbies try to gank me, packs of lowbies try, all levels attack all levels. It's fun, plain and simple. You can go ahead and wait for someone to flag themselves, I'll just kill 'em.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Much appreciated.
There are times I wish I had chosen a PvP server. Then I remember on EQ how the super twinks would just run around pwning everyone. Then on DAoC's Modred the level 50s would actually camp the level 20s.
Trust me, I understand why people want to PvP. The thing I don't understand is why a person 10-60 levels higher would go around whacking people. It doesn't involve skill, and it doesn't give rewards. Then the PvP server players try to say the want fair fights. Sure, you do.
I guess when your opponent has only 7k HP to your 12K you take off gear? No, you don't. You want to crush the opponent into a pile of dust. Yes, its exhillirating when you win with 10HP left, and it was a good fight. However, I've never seen anyone try to make a fight fair.
I've seen groups demolish entire zones of low levels, I've seen level 70s camp level 20-60s. I've seen level 70s look for people who are PvE, so they are easy prey. The rare, very rare person will wait for it to be a fair fight, so please do't insult us with that.
PvP is about getting the upperhand, and taking your enemy down with as little risk as possible.Unfortuantely, too many people do it with 0 risk, and find it enjoyable. Those of us who don't want to waste our energy ganking some pathetic level 20 go to BGs. No point to a PVP server, except to gank lowbies, when we have BGs that pair us with people of equal level and intent.
Of course there are quite some annoyances in there as well, but don't forget: random PVP gives you quite some memorable moments. I raided my way almost to the end in WOW (pre-TBC), and of course some boss fights were all exhilarating fun, but whenever I think of really good WoW stories a lot of random world PVP encounters leap to my mind. It's a different, much more personal sort of thrill.
And level 60s one-shotting my level 15 alt as they pass by always gave me a chuckle - as long as they don't decide to camp my corpse
