Tell me about your MUD

I was looking into DragonRealms, because I seen someone talk about here once on the forums. I went to do some research on it and they are charging people $25/mo for Premium service (member) and $45/mo for Platinum. I thought it was an outrageous amount to pay for a non-graphical game. Hell, I wouldn't pay that for a great graphical game.

So my question is, what MUD do you play? I understand the majority of forumers probably don't play and has never heard of MUDs, but I know we have a small number of MUD users on the forums. Please tell me about your MUD and if it is worth playing.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

Well my mud has a lot of clay in it.

I hate IRE MUDs. I don't know why, I just can't stand them.

When I mud, which is still relatively often, I usually just play Dystopia/Godwars MUDs. They're pure PVP games and I never feel like RPing anymore. Back in the day though, I played tons of RPG MUDs, though the only one that I remember was called Realm of the Magi, which is now dead.

DartMUD and Armageddon are the two best IMO. Both are RP enforced with permadeath. If you really want to know what MUDs are all about then log on to either one. If you really want to be part of a virtual world and not just playing a game, log onto either of those MUDs. If you've never seen a movie that was better than the book, log into any MUD on Top Mud Sites.

Okay, I tried aardwolf and I under estimated how complicated MUDs could be. I was hoping for a little bit of GUI or some sort of interface that made the game easier.

Is there a MUD where you have one side of the screen dedicated to showing your stats, spells/actions available, and what you have equipped and in your inventory? This will help reduce the scrolling of text. I couldn't keep up with the text scrolling in aardwolf. Maybe MUDs just isn't for me.

Gotta admit, having graphics and being able to use your mouse for most things is a huge advantage. But MUDs allow for more immersion and aren't bound by the same limitations of graphical MMORPGs.

Sounds like you need a good customizable MUD client. ZMUD and TinTin++ are fairly popular. I was partial to GMUD until it stopped working on my computer.

Couple of quick tips: 1) Turn on ANSI color text. You'll be glad you did. 2) Your stats usually appear on the command prompt. Most MUDs let you configure your command prompt to display whatever information you might feel you need.

    Hope that helps.

Ansalon Online [based on the world of dragonlance] my favorite MUDD of all time                         http://www.mudmagic.com/listings/redirect.php?id=760

    Welcome to Ansalon,

Ansalon is a MUD thats been around for a long time.  One of the oldest DragonLance MUDs around, and certainly the most 'in theme' of those. It has the good fortune to be the pet project of some very dedicated folks who simply want to share their love of DragonLance and role-play with others.  Ansalon has the benefit of thousands of hours of very fine-tuned code and constant upgrades according to the wishes of players. There are always immortals around who are very helpful and open to the constantly changing wants and needs of players.

Ansalon is always looking for new players with new stories to tell and new conflicts to insight. Speaking of stories, check out our stories page!! Thousands of stories from 1999 through now! Read them by author, updated as they post!

New Players are encouraged and with them in mind, Ansalon offers detailed maps and lots of

people willing to help out and give advice so that folks unused to Ansalon don't have to struggle through the often painful process of learning a new MUD. Our Newbietalk channel is seen by all immortals, helpers, and anyone under level 15. Unfound helps are reported immediately to the staff, and often allows us to help directly with creation if there are issues.

There is a great new 'USE' command for almost any object you find, give it a shot! Ask questions on the Newbie channel (or OOC), get all of the free maps from the school.. READ the creation email that gets sent to you, it's created based off of your character. Not only does the email give you the log and pass, but also a little starter help information.

We fully encourage clans and other organizations.  Many of these groups are looking for fresh blood as well.  Its very possible for new players to rise to leadership positions given hard work

and a lot of interaction with other players.

LOL!  MUDs, wow.  Yeah, my wife and I met on one (Tho it is defunct and desolved now, as that was a dozen years ago, or so.) but yeah, some ones that were good in their day were Aardwolf, Medievia, Realms of Despair.  Even Ark of the Covenant was decent once upon a time.  That was then, this is now, and I could not tell ya how they all are now.  I am sure they are all still up and fully active though.  That list is a broad base, all very different from one another.  I got around. ;)

To get the most from MUDs, you not only have to have a good client, but also be able to programme it. It's possible to get your health etc represented as bars, and make sounds trigger as warning for certain text. You can even create mouse-click buttons for your various skills.

For most games, there are pre-made scripts for Z-Mud (or other clients) available for download, but you're going to need to customise them to fit your character's particular skills and equip[ment.

Essentially, MUD PvP can be highly complex and will often end up being a battle of client programming skills. From my experience it can also be the biggest and most challenging PvP buzz you'll ever find online.

I used to play at Another World, that was ages ago. Me and a friend actually built an 800-room dwarven city and dungeon complex in it. Geez, haven't thought about MUD´s in years
