Are there no MMOs for Dial-up?

McwallenMcwallen Member UncommonPosts: 70

I eep looking for games that someone on a dial-up connection could play, because a friend of mine wants to get into playing MMOs, but all I have found is Runescape and Trickster Online. Some people have mentioned Guild Wars, but he has already tried that so I can tell you it doesn't work. Are there any other MMOs that WORK, preferably without incredible amounts of lag but he could live, that someone on a dial-up connection could play?

majority of the MMO's you mentioned in other threads should work for Dial-Up or atleast they used to. My cousin played with me on EQ2 with dial up just fine. DAoC, EQ, UO, Ragnarok should all work on dial up unless they've changed that recently. I'm not sure about DDO. Hell WoW would probably work on Dial Up as well.

It would also help to mention what kind of computer he has.

well, world war 2 online is playable with a 56k modem (but you need to actually get 56k), but that's an mmofps sounds like you are looking for an mmorpg.

check out www.realmserver.com The Realms is the original graphical mud for Sierra before it got sold twice. It's a really fun game I spent months playing it.

By the way this game is very dial-up friendly

Nearly all games will function fine on a dialup connection, with the exception of extremely crowded areas. The problem with the games nowadays is the extremely large patches which are nearly impossible to download on dialup.

    Now with 57.3% more flames!

dial-up is pretty outdated now.  most people can get cheap broadband connections depending on where u live.  i pay $30AUD a month and get unlimited hours and 5gb of downloads.  pretty cheap for all that.  your friend is probly finding someone with the game he wants that is fully patched and burning those files onto a disc.  thats how i got a few of my MMO's as i did not want to download for 8 hours before i could play.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

At various times in the past few years due to location (thank you rural Missour) or money issues I've been forced to game on dial up. Most any game can be played on dial up, as said the factor is the patches. Patches will kill you and sometimes take days to download. It's a pain in the rear, but atleast you play.

The best luck I've had with dial up in Final Fantasy XI, very little dial up created lag. Worst I had was Vanguard, that was a chore. WoW played fine on dial-up accept in crowded areas where there was some "scooting" and other connection lag but patches weren't that bad, especially with their new background downloader I'd imagine.

There's also a wealth of free MMOs that should play fine on dial up (Rappelz, Flyff, ArchLord, 9dragons) but those all require one big download to start with. For initial downloads or for very large patches I found a friend who let me bring over my PC and borrow their broadband for an hour or so or use a memory stick (I used my ipod actually :) ).

Ultima Online should work just fine on dialup.

pahya  ffxi isnt dial up friendly , the POL is such a piece of crap and square cant manage a mmorpg. The current disk released (3.99) takes  8 hours on T1 line. I used dial up on FF XI when I was first in arkansas , the zones would take 15 to 20 minutes to load , the updates would take 3 to 4 days to download , (mostly because POL chokes on bytes.)

Most games are now sending 89 kbs of information or more , I believe some are as high as 120 kbs now. DAOC last time I played sent 7 kbs , and UO sent 2 / 10 kbs (Kingdom reborn). The updates are now massive for these games , 200 meg to 1 gig is standard for updates.

Lineage 1 / Lineag2 / City of Hero per download some update content (100 megs over the month)

Lineage 1 is probly the best for dial up , it was design for very low end users in Korea. Most of the data is fairly small 400 meg (because of mp3 files with new updates). all the text , all the sprites are design in HTML fashion so you talking 8 kbs or less.

who can't afford 20 dollars a month for frikin 1.2 mb dsl?

Well you can get "light" broadband, or atleast here in Florida for about $15 bucks a month. That's hardly more than most dial up companies, just skip the hassle and go for that.

I have played Guild Wars with many people who have dial-up.  It takes a few moments to load when you enter or leave a zone but besides that they never had any problems.

Many of areas of the US, believe it or not, still do not have access to anything other than dial-up. Even where I am the choices are dial-up, or $50 a month for cable. While $50 might not seem much for most it most certainly IS a lot for some.

And personally, I never had a problem aside from patches with FFXI. I played on dial up for a year, part of that on a 21.6k connection. I did however, have my initial update on broadband.
