To play or not to play?

I'm getting a new comp pretty soon(alienware) and I was thinking about playing a different mmorpg and I was wondering if I should play Wow or something else.  I'm mainly interested in pve, but I really do enjoy a good pvp game though.  So, should I play Wow or somthing else such as guild wars, everquest, lord of the rings... please help me decide!!!!

LOTRO ... then WoW ... then life ...

    wow compared to lotro

wow wins just for fact it has more of an easier way to get to grip with everything

i have played lotro and though it needed alot of work as a mmo it felt very cold and lonely.

whilst wow has a big player base it has diffrent servers depending on what you want to do

    RP -  roleplaying  -  i am 100% roleplayer so i am addicted

PVP -  if you like fighting against real people

PVE -  if you just wanna sit down and play the game without having to worry about rping or pvp

How about playing the trial and speaking to a few people in the game itself and then make an informed choice? You can listen to the players and the haters of the game on here, but until you actually play it yourself you just won't know.

I wouldnt reccomend it. I'd say WoW has reached it's peak, and thats not a good time to get into a game. there is a new wave of games coming out in the next year, id recommend getting into one of them at launch, and seeing the whole life of a game

Hmmm, only a couple of years old, just had it's first major expansion with a second huge expansion coming next year, constantly updated with new content, largest player base of any western MMO, yeah that's a game in decline if ever i saw one, It's auto assault all over again!!! PMSL!!!!

Yes, by all means try other games as i said in the post above, as you will only know a game after you play it but to hold out for the 'next generation' (always makes me chuckle) of games and jump in at the start is risky. No-one, but no-one knows how these games are going to be on release, even those people playing alpha or beta tests don't know what the final product will be like overall.

By all means consider the new games, but don't discount all the existing ones.

I don't think thats what the guy you responded to is really saying. He is saying that there won't be as many people in the lower noob areas, or people to level up with who are first timers. Most of the low levels you see are probably vets lvling alts who will mostly ignore you as they speed from quest to quest maximizing their time.

It might not necesarily be that way, but that is generally how it is. With new games coming out in the months ahead, I'd just do trials of various games until a new one comes out and play that instead.

The only three games I think I'd recommend right now in the fantasy genre would be EQ2 WoW and LOTR. There are other games out there that are good, but they are a bit dated.

Vanguard might be ok to start brand new in a couple months or so, I hear its not quite the disaster that it was anymore, its slowly crawling out of the hole it was left to die in.

I could probably understand that if it were true, but on my main server alone (Aggramar, one of the oldest) there has been a big influx of 'new' players. People leave and people join MMO's all the time and having the major popularity and player base that it does, this is all the more true for WoW.

As far as new games are concerned it is all going to depend on what sort of player you areas to whether you would see the same effect as it won't take long for the ex-beta players will take over ther servers.

yeah i wasn't saying the game is in decline, but it has reached its peak. everyone is endgame, new players will never get to play the old raids. Wouldnt you agree that you would  get more out of WoW starting 2-3 years ago than now? Getting to see it grow into what it is? Learning everything that everyone who plays now has known for 2-3 years? and if someone is buying an area-51, why wouldnt you recommend a game that takes advantage of the quality of that system, and that he could see from day 1? especially with these games coming out. I didn't mean what i wrote to seem offensive to WoW.. i didnt think "peak" was an insult, but hey, i cant see whats in everyone's head. But on that note, I do think WoW's best days are behind it.. there won't be any more 1million subs jumps for it(outside asia anyway). I dont think its anywhere near dead, but with WAR, AoC, TR, GnH, Aion, TCoS, Huxley, PotBS, SUN, and DF on the  horizon, I think theres only one way for it to go.

jahar is right, i started playing it in the summer, im lvl 50 warrior and i feel that im playing just to catch up to everyone else who already have lvl 70 chars and are pvpin non stop or in arenas. there is still game content, there are people still raiding karazhan, and still gettin into TBC, but for you, starting a new character now would be a waste (imo). the game is at its end and with a new expansion coming out NEXT YEAR, god knows if the game will be around with all the new releases (AoC, WAR, TR).

it still is a brilliant mmo, but theres so much more coming out soon, i dont think you should get yourself stuck into WoW otherwise you will waste your time and money.

im just playing the game til something else good is released, i.e Warhammer something else.

    I disagree strongly.

Even nowadays, the amount of new in wow is still strong. sales have never slowed down and you can be sure the people buying the boxes are new guys, not the veterans.

in my server too there is full of newbies. some are of course alts of veterans but others are real new people that never played before. beside, the veteran alts are not all jackasses.... and they know the game, so they can help the real newbies along, at least that was my experience with my guild.

So by all means try the game and there is an advantage in starting a game late: no early game hassles. seeing a game grow is a nice thing sometimes, but there are also negative sides to it, called lack of content or in case of wow server queues and server instability, all things of the past.

now you can ejoy a mature game with none of the problems that troubles launches and with much much more content for all levels. and do not care if the others are at level 70. you will get there soon enough, levelling up in wow does not take years.

Of course play!  We live in age of WOW. Its a shame not to try it while its here!  Your kids will ask you "hey daddy have you played WoW?" You better answer YES!

    Hehe

I've been a WoW player for quite some time now.  As are quite a few of my RL friends.

I've been in MMOs since 1998 (scary that it's coming up on 10 years) and WoW is certainly topping my list.

I definately say you should play it.  Some games aren't for everyone.. but  that doesn't include WoW

Either way, best of luck to you!

  • RushagRushag Member Posts: 39

Im playing MMOs since 1998 too. First one was Ultima Online. Maybe because of lack of experience many people dont understand how phenomenal and unique WoW compared to other MMORPGS. WoW is The Beatles of MMORPGs =)

Sorry if i sound like fanboy, its not actually true. There are many good MMO around. Try them all but dont miss WoW.

I don't mean any disrespect directly, but statements like that worry the hell outta me. There is no assurance that any of these games will be as playable or friendly as WoW at all. I still remember all the hype and player anticipation for Star Wars before it was released and how it was going to wipe out every other MMO on the market and what a damned disaster that turned out to be!!

I have said it already, but it bears saying again that no-one can guage how good these games are until they are at least in the very last stages of Beta, but in reality until they are released and actually live up to any hype or promises they have made. Press, fans and game producers themselves can talk a good game all they like, but until it goes to market and actually sells it means nothing at all.

  • If you've never played wow before, you should give it a try (trial ftw).  The end game sucks though, so unless you want to raid, you may find this to be a killer later on.

I'd play WoW if I was you.  You'll be able to level up, meet some people, get the hang of it then the expansion will come out.  If its anything like Burning Crusade (first xpac) you'll be back on a level playing field with everyone else and will be able to experience new content as the rest of the community tries the content.  I've been in two guild that were very successful, one was pretty much at launch and the other was after I left and came back for expac. The guild was like clearing BWL before expac but ripped through Burning Crusade.  If its anything like the first one, you'll be on equal footing gear wise with people that have played for years.

I have played Lotr recently and wow for a while now, I do suggest you play WoW over Lotr , better pve and pvp in my opinion. Lotr seemed like the quests were pretty repetitive and I know WoW has alot of quests like that but I have 2 level 70s, a 60 and a level 52 and I am still leveling another toon for shits and giggles like they say but in Lotr I only got to 25 with my Hunter and i reached a level of boredom that I couldnt explain and it was odd because the community was pretty good, and the graphics of the game are awesome. There were alot of group quests and sometimes finding a group meant spamming the chat for at least an hour, sometimes if you were lucky 30 min.

Both games have a 7 day trial however and there is no harm in trying out both.
