Question for Rick Saada: Has the NDA Been Lifted?

Question for Rick Saada: Has the NDA Been Lifted?

The reason I ask, is because numerious threads on this forum seem to be giving out a great deal of "Closed BETA" information.

If it has been lifted, GREAT!

Very good question. I was wondering myself. Has a release date been set yet as well?

I don't believe the NDA has been lifted nor has a release day been set. All that has been said is that they're looking for this Autum for a release and we'll get some solid info on "Talk like a pirate day", which I believe is this or next month.

I call upon the godly powers of RickSaada to answer these questions in full!

    NDA is still in effect.

Release date information being held up by European distribution. They plan on doing a simultanious release in Europe/US so everything needs to be nailed down before the date comes out.

Rusty has said however when you DO get a release date. It will be rock solid, 0% chance of changing.

Looks like others have already covered this, but to recap:

    1.  The NDA has NOT been lifted

    2.  We haven't announced a ship date

    3. We plan on having more information for you by Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Sept 19th.

4  If I tell you anything, Rusty will have me BBQ'd (we're in Texas for the Austin Game Developer's Conference)

I'm in a talk on Cheats, Speed Hacks, and Dupes, learning more about how to keep you pirates in line...

Hey Rick, can I have one of your legendary cakes as a pre-order gift?

Somebody has been googling me, haven't they?  Actually, for the first time in 20 years, I'm *not* throwing a dessert party for my birthday.  I need a break.

I think you got burnt out bringing in food everyday at FLS for the last five years, I'd also be willing to bet that Rusty was a 100lb weakling five years ago and your food is what beefed him up!

Because someone keeps thinking it's a good idea to put screen doors on the hull of the boats for easy entry? That's what you were gonna say, right?

really who cares about the NDA...?

I think the cause for some people to seemingly break the NDA is that FLS has been continuing to allow many people to play their game at gameshows like PAX and when these people get to test the game for a few minutes they are not under any NDA and can freely discuss their short experience later.

Well, we do, obviously.  There's a difference between somebody talking about the few minutes of play they got at a trade show (which we don't mind), and people who are in the beta talking about it freely (which we do mind).   The whole point of a closed beta is that it's testing on incomplete software, which may still need tuning, bug fixing, or be missing features.  As such it's not really appropriate for public comment, or for public judging.  We have beta forums for that so we can get the feedback we need to improve the game and prepare it for public consumption.  That doesn't mean that we need all our dirty laundry aired in public, which is exactly what would happen if we didn't have an NDA.  In the end, it's better for us, the game, and the gaming community to have people judge the game based on its shipping state than on the comments of someone playing an unfinished product.

Sorry, jargon for those of us who've been around a while.  An NDA is a Non-Disclosure Agreement.  It's the document we make you sign before you go into the beta that states that you won't reveal what you see to those not in the beta, won't talk to the press, won't post screen shots etc.  It's standard fare for closed betas, and since it can be legally binding for those under 18, it's the reason that we don't allow minors into the beta.

    Rick

but, with no nda, you'd have people talking about the game and all the problems that get fixed and how quickly they get fixed, how much the devs love the community, etc.   i'd think that'd outweight people being impatient to know about a game.  that's my opinion on it anyways and how i feel.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Why the heck would you want a document signed off for the first place?

Every game has an NDA for beta ( i think... ) and every game will have one so why fuss about it anyways?

...and i don't know how to post screenshots or talk to the press.. :P I'm only 12 comon.

Ahh, but then you'd have all the people yelling and screaming about the problems that aren't fixt and how the dev's aren't responding quick enough to this and that and how long it takes them to fix this and that.  I'm on the fence about NDA's personally.  But it doesn't really matter as a product still in Closed Beta can go through MAJOR changes thus anything you heard from a tester one day will be irrelevent a week later anyway.  The only thing that matters really is the product at RELEASE.  Anything up to that point is completely not worth knowing as it might not even be around at release.

Sure, we'd all love to hop in and see if a game is going to be worth our money but we also know that there will be people that will buy it at release.  And out of those people that do buy it some, if not all, of them will have something to say about it.  And most of what they have to say will end up on the web.  Thus, we will all know within a week of release what the players are saying.

Above and beyond the idea of the NDA I like the idea of Open Beta, or at the very least, a prolonged Stress Test open to all that will allow the masses to see what's what.  That being said, I am wary of any game that refuses to do an Open Beta or an "open" Stress Test as that tells me that maybe they have something to hide.  These days, *I* think, relying upon people paying their money for a MMO without having the ability to test it first isn't doing yourself any favors...  Course, that means you can keep your testers under NDA that much longer...  (queue C & C Music Factory -- Things That Make Ya Go Hmm)
