i am one of the many who is looking for a good mmorpg, i enjoyed myself for 2 years playing guild wars, always liked the pvp, but it's getting boring, repitive, i'd even say 'easy' the only challange are the high ranked guild battles lately so i thought, maybe i just need a break from guild wars, and start looking for another mmorpg, after looking for.. 2 months, i tested every f2p (got to start somewhere ) played a few trials, like EVE and WoW, but didn't find something which good as well good pve as pve (i'm not saying guild wars has btw) while i was mmorpg-hunting i also noticed AoC having some nice aspects, but after the AoC-will-have-sex-news i decided not to even try it, i can image the community already, a siege war with 200 people 'having fun', so i'm getting quite desperate... if anyone knows a good and balanced game (don't care about the monthly fees) please help me out

I Feel your pain......I've tried a bunch myself.....I'll keep watching this thread because I'm in the same boat.
There's something fundamentally wrong with the idea that a person should expect years of entertainment from a single game.
i had years of entertainment with guild wars, but guild wars is... dead now, in that way, they aren't goign to add any content anymore, and eotn feels like a betrayal by Anet, they can't possibly expect their current 4 million players to keep playing guild wars, if they didn't add anything new in 2 years... o right, they added dunguons, wooooow, i did a dunguon, which was linked to a master quest, but i forgot 2 team members (henchies, i didn't forgot real people ) if you can do a 'master dunguon' with only 6 people, just imagine how people are going to entertain themselves with that... (also, they didn't add any PvP, which was the best part of guild wars, instead of improving their best part, they decided to improve their hopeless pve?)

A bit confused... you say "which good as well good pve as pve" ? Are you saying your looking for a game with PvE and PvP balance or something with more of a PvE focus and challenge? The only game I can think of that you haven't mentioned in your post in EQ2, and although I only played on release and quit shortly after I heard it has gone through many improvements and has fun pvp (there was no pvp when I played)

1. PvE is not hopeless. It's the best PvE I've ever played.
2. They're constantly releasing updates. Not expansions...meaning that PvP updates could be in the making.
3. You'll be back soon xD I said exactly that 2 months ago and I'm right back in GW lol. It grows on you after having played so long.

heh, you understood me wrong there, my fault , with good pve, i mean not a massive grindfest or something
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Best PvE game I have ever played was EQ lol, but it's changed a lot over the years. You didn't like WoW's PvE? Or was it just not challenging enough with all the solo content etc.

2. the last real UPDATE, was sorrow's funrace, in the summer of 2005, the rest where skill balances, and maybe you can call the black moa minipet an update, besides those i didn't see any 'updates'
3. and i know i'll be back, i'm planning on getting back, but playing a game 2 years in a row was hard enough i really need a break!
btw, for all you mmo(rpg/rts)-hunters, i'm looking forward to a mmorts, called dawn of fantasy, which should come out around Q1 2008, no monthly fees, and probably the first serious mmorts!

WoW's PvE is a grindfest imo, i played the trial, and i found about 5 quests in the starter place, next quests where 3 levels higher, meaning, you have to grind 3 lvl's, to finally do some quests, this was also the reason why iq uit playing lotro (might play it again soon) i finished book 1, i liked the game, book 2: lvl 25 quests... meaning you either have to do quests (which all are very similar imo) or grind a few 8 lvl's it's like there's a big hole in their storyline there ^^
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
It can be played as a grindfest, but it is also one of the most "breadcrumb" style games I have ever played. I think to a new player its hard to know how/where to get all the quests etc. but thats how people can sell those leveling guides, 1-70 all questing (of course most leveling guides suggest killing mobs to and from quest locations). Of course what fun is a game if your following a cookbook full of step-by-step leveling recipes. Non-grind PvE leveling... I'm pretty stumped. You can take the PvE out of the grind, but you can't take the grind out of PvE. Like you said even a chain of quests will quickly look like a grind, making you finish them all and then giving you 10 more similar quests.
PvE without the grind...
I think your better off looking for a game that makes you forget it was a grind... especially for PvE, for PvP I'd say Fury is your best bet

I have tried just about all of them, and I have reached several conclusions: 1) EQ 2 is possibly the best fantasy MMORPG that has since heretofore been created and 2) nothing will fully recapture the experience of your first MMORPG.
EQ 2 is my favorite game for its huge world, the amount of content the game offers; the diversity of races and classes; the deep character customization from appearance to spells to abilities; other game features such as collection Quests and a fun crafting system.
EQ 2 has all the features I love in a MMORPG. The above are just a few I mentioned.

NOOOO, fury has the worst pvp i've ever seen, it's quite pathetic actually, but melee is overpowered.. PvP doesn't have any variation, and it isn't balanced AT ALL (played the beta ^^) also, they downscaled the graphics for the preview weekend, but it still needed 512 VRAM, so i assume they don't really have good programmers there, because they have a HUGE memory leak
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
I too have searched up and down for a good mmorpg i have tried just about all like coh, cov,lc,roe,gw,and on and on but atm I am playing Horizons it seems ok atm i can be a dragon and fly when i reach adult hood crafting is good and i love being a dragon for a change quests seem good as well just a noob tho lvl 11 so i can't say much about it really just i was bored now i am having fun again
nothing out there. I went back to AC. if you can get past the graphics it's still a good game. small hardcore crowd. if' you're pvp they got the server for you, brutal back in the day and from what i hear still is. pk lite on the "white servers"
hmm.. yes i'm quite interested in EQ 2 too, played the trial, was certainly better than WoW, but the graphics don't really look that appealing, after playing GW for 2 years, seeing all those nice-looking upcoming mmorpg's, EQ 2's gfx don't look that appealing anymore ^^ however... does EQ 2 has a housing system? i've been looking for a game having that, for too long, luckely aion will have a housing system , but when will it come out?...
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
jezus, mmorpg.com really has an active community, as soon as i replied to 2 people who replied, 2 other people replied 0.0 i wished my guild's forums where that active lol
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Horizons has lair and housing for dragons and bipeds alike lol
it does? didn't expect to see a housing-like system in a f2p, guess i'll give it a try then, it is free, right?
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
w00psie, just saw it isn't does it have a trial?
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
i believe it has a 14 day free trial iff not you can just try for 1 month try and see if you like
I only said that is your best bet for PvP without a grind (as Fury has no PvE).

wrong again! fury has a grind, you kill people to gain essence, to finish quests, to gain skills, to kill people, to get essence,...very similar to 'you kill a creature, collect the loot, to buy armor, to kill that creature even easier!'
ah well, just my opinion, but they failed making fury a good game imo ^^
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
i have to agree with above post about fury. it could have been alot better but as of right now while trying the beta i dont think its worth buying. maybe befor release they might fix it

EQ2 is the best MMO currently. No doubt about it. Most content, housing, nicely done PVP and yes, housing.
IMO, GW is hardly a MMO... i played one evening and did not liked it at all. Too asian style i guess... While playing, i always had the feeling i was playing... Silkroad
EDIT (Stole that from the EQ2 board on mmorpg.com):
Destiny Awaits
My first glimpse of the ship filled me with awe. I'd seen boats before, of course; small craft that would cautiously cling to the safety of the coastline. But this was a tall ship, the kind built to travel across dangerous oceans that were only now becoming navigable. Vessels like this hadn't dared to journey across the seas since the cataclysms began, so to see one for the first time made my heart leap inside my chest.
Though I'd never ventured very far beyond the outskirts of my home village, I knew the tales of the great war, the Rending, and of course the Shattering. The eldest among us taught this dark history to the young ones, telling of a time when our world was a vastly different place. Some of them were afraid of what existed beyond the confines of our village, but not me.
I?d always felt a calling, as if something was out there waiting for me. I had grown up with no idea what my future would hold or how I was to find it, but I could never shake the feeling that my life wasn't meant to be spent in a small seaside village. So when the ship arrived and the crew came ashore looking for volunteers, I knew it was my chance.
Saying goodbye was difficult. I didn't know if I would ever see my friends and family again, but this was something I had to do. I joined the crew of the merchant ship and met some of the other recruits who, like me, had chosen this new life. There was Geredo, a clever gnome; Valik, the strong and agile kerra; and Anikra and Balen, a married half elf couple. While I didn't intend to spend my life as a seafaring merchant, it seemed like a gateway to the sort of excitement I was looking for.
Little did I know that excitement was about to come looking for me.
The brigands attacked without warning. It all happened so fast, it's still a blur. There was a brief battle, but we were ill-prepared to fight against such seasoned pirates. They threw some of us, like poor Balen, overboard. I either jumped or was knocked off the deck; I can't be sure which. The last thing I remember is grabbing hold of Anikra and clinging to a piece of wreckage as the brigands sailed away. Then the darkness overtook me and I blacked out.
I awoke on board an even bigger ship, with markings on its sails I didn't recognize. I stood slowly and looked out across the rolling seas.
I suddenly realized that there was a whole new world out there beyond the waves, and it didn't belong to gods or dragons or the armies of the past; it belonged to me, and to others who longed to explore the mysteries of the unknown. This was our time, a time of destiny, and I knew that I would soon become part of a world that I had never dared imagine.
The captain is calling out. I think the adventure is about to begin...
You will start your adventures in several starting areas...

Titles
I have read allot of reviews for Lord of the Rings online and they rave about how they have lot’s of titles. Everquest 2 has LOADS of titles. Titles can come in different forms; some are for killing great numbers of monsters. Some come with your veteran rewards. Some come through completing an Alternate Advancement line. Titles are everywhere and you can work towards getting a title from level 1.
Alternate Advancement
After level 10 you receive AA experience for completing quests and killing named monsters. Through the game as you explore you will usually receive exploration experience which goes towards your adventuring levels, AND AA exp which goes towards AA points. After you collect a point you can spend it in a number of AA trees. There is usually a class tab and a specialist tab. For example: one tab might say Druid and the other might be a Warden which is a specialist druid. These power-up your spells and abilities and as you spend more AA points. One AA line will resurrect my druid automatically if killed.
Player Housing
Everyone get’s a player house from start. You can invite friends over to visit your instanced house. Unfortunately SOE never implemented sitting and lying in furniture. However when you collect furniture and pets it’s a nice place to chill with your friends. Guilds also can have housing that is much larger and more expensive. You can find pictures and facts about Norrathian housing in the Norrathian Homeshow Thread.
Lore and Legend Quests
As the name says Everquest 2 it is the sequel in the Norath universe. Many long time EQ1 players remember the NPC’s and places of EQ1. And EQ2 does allot to remember those NPC’s. Lore and Legend Quests give you an opportunity to collect items from certain kinds of monsters like gnolls. The earliest L&L quest is gnolls. After collecting items off gnolls you receive an item for your house. The gnoll quest gives you a huge axe to hang on your wall in your player house. Plus it comes with a book that explains the history and lore of gnolls. There are loads of others as well. You will also receive a Master Strike spell against the monster you completed. Find a complete guide here.
Holiday’s
Everquest has created unique Norathian holidays that mirror major US holidays. These include:
Robust Guild Tools
With the implementation of cloaks you can now have your own unique guild emblem shown on your cloak. The range of design possibilities is huge. In the game guilds can advertise their guild in a special screen helping guilds and players connect. And the guild tool tracks all the various activities of your guildies. If you pay an additional $0.99 you can have a tool to chat with guildies when you’re not in game.
Status Points
n the game you can do certain quests and earn status. Status gives you the ability to buy certain items like horses and housing cheaper. It’s also required for certain high level items to purchase. When you do these quests you gain status for you and your guild. Guilds themselves will level up and new rewards will be available to them. Guilds level based on status gained.
Collection Quests
Out in the world are scattered glowing question marks. These items are collection items. If you manage to complete a collection you can turn it in for an in game item. At lower level’s these are usually not very good. Later on it can be very cool items like pets or unique house items.
Mounts
There are several varieties of mounts in the game
SOGA Models
These character models were created as part of the EverQuest II East project, in which Sony Online Entertainment partnered with Gamania to form SOGA and truly localize EQII for the Asian market. Not only did we create new character models, but user interface modifications have been made (such as click to move) along with other changes to make EQII East appeal to the markets in China, Korea, and Taiwan.
Arena
There is a player vs player, group vs group arena in several of the major cities. These arena battles can be with your base character or as equal levels. You can also do monster battles where you change into a monster form and battle. There is more then one type of area instance, and more then one type of game. The arena is a great place for guild events and just kicking it with friends. You can read an Arena guide here.
Fan Faire
For all you Renaissance Festival, Convention types SOE holds fan fairs every year or so in a major US city. This year is in Las Vegas. It’s your typical meet and greet along with live quest, swag and costumes. Usually there is a lot of eating and alcohol as well.
Station Exchange
Station Exchange is the official Sony Online Entertainment service that provides players a secure method of buying and selling the right to use in-game coin, items and characters in accordance with SOE’s license agreement, rules and guidelines.
This service provides players a way to take part in this growing secondary market in a more secure manner.
Station Players
Station Players™ is the official online service that connects players to the EverQuest® and EverQuest II community. This web-based suite offers an array of features that give players incredible access to their characters and guilds by merging the game world with the world wide web.
Many of the features that are part of the Station Players functionality are already included with your subscription!

I second the EQ2 recommendation. Played it at release and was disappointed. Tried it again this month and addicted. Excellent game.
