Returning to MMOs & need advice

My wife & I are thinking about getting back into an MMO, but are unsure of which game to play.  Here's a little background:

We played EQ1 for 4 years, left for SWG when it was in it's infancy.

Played SWG for about 3 years, until the NGE (need I say more?).

Played EQ2 for over a year, had alot of fun with it, but not enough time to play.

So, we are trying to decide to go back to EQ2 (which I have RL friends playing), or start something new like WoW (which I also have RL friends that play, but who doesn't?).

Can anyone suggest which MMO we should choose & reasons why?  It doesn't have to be between EQ2 & WoW, but I'd like to stick to a fantasy-type game.

Thank you in advance!

Why not stick to the tried and tested, AKA EQ2? If you had fun playing with it rather play that and if you ever get bored of that, then move to something else.

Sometimes I would get bored of EQ2, but I think it was mainly doing the same Heritage Quests over & over.  I know one thing my wife likes about EQ2 now is the Fae race (she loves fairies), but the expansion is $40, which would cost the same as 2 WoW accounts, not to mention I would have to buy it as well, which takes the total to $80.

If it's the better game, I would definitely go back to it, but I'm just curious as to what the unbiased population would say.  My friends that play each game say theirs is the best, but give no real reasons, just want us to play with them.

If it was me I'd go for WOW.... I can't really comprehend that there are still people out there who've never tried it.

You said you left EQ 2 because you didn't have a lot of time, if so, WOW's a little less of a grind until the end game, however if you plan to raid, you'd better have lots of free time.

Another great choice might be Lord of the Rings Online, more casual than the other two, mature community, seems to be still growing and has a good lore to it.

One thing though, you said you had friends playing in both games... if you're one of those people who need to have friends playing MMO's with you, (I'm not, I just make new ones) then pick one of your first two choices....(which ever ones are likely to give you the most free stuff )

I prefer WoW myself, but I didn't come in here to say that; I just wanted to give you a correction your pricing on EQ2.

They just released an all-in-one pack that includes every expansion made for something like $30, or $40. You CAN NOT GET THIS ONLINE. Shop around for it, an Ebgames, Fry's, Best Buy, etc.

If it's only about price, go EQ2, but you should atleast give a trial a shot to WoW, see if you like it more.

Ive never played EQ2, but if you have friends there thats probably the best choice.  Seems like you really need to have lots of friends/family in game or a good guild to really have fun with any of the current crop of MMOs.  Chalk that up to shallow gameplay and watered-down features...

My wife & I are playing the trial for WoW, & so far, enjoying it.  I hope there's alot of quests, because that's what she likes doing when I'm not home.

    Vanguard!

    Sorry, just kidding. lol

I'd say go with EQ2 as there is not anything better out right now unless you'd like LOTRO. I can't speak for that one which I haven't tried yet. You can now play a 7 day free trial to see if you like it however, so that might be something you'd want to look into.

Otherwise, the best bet on the horizon would appear to be Warhammer assuming you like pvp. If not, I don't see much besting EQ2 for a fantasy MMORPG with the possible exception of an overhauled Vanguard maybe over a year's time or so, ala EQ2's makeover. I do think they might pull that off. The game has lots of potential and was more the victim or horrible project management than design overall, deliberate old school pain (supposed to be fun) excepted of course.

WoW is a polished and watered down first gen game seeking to please the lowest common denominator and doing that very well but given what you've played before I don't see it being a game you'd likely enjoy but who knows. You can free trial that game too and maybe you should just to see for yourself. I would caution you though that while at the outset it seems fresh and fun, it does become old pretty fast for an older MMO vet. At least that was my take on it.

We'll see where the WoW trial takes us, but I've talked to a friend that played WoW & EQ2 before, but not anymore, & he said WoW was more fun in the long run.

It's pretty much a battle between these two games.  I guess we'll see...

    This was sarcasm, I bet.

If you are looking for something to entertain you until something new comes out then I would pick the game where you have friends and family already playing and that sounds like EQ2.   It is a good group game and you already have a group!

Definitely EQ2... I love it and it recently got my wife back into gaming after she had stopped playing EQ some years ago.. Only problem now is my 2nd gaming computer will become her gaming computer so I cant watch a movie on one screen while playing on the other.  The $40 price for the expansion includes all the current expansions(does not include the adventure packs), so if you were like me and stopped playing back before Desert of Flames, it is really worth it to get the expansion.

That's humorous. You are going to miss watching movies on a second PC while you play EverQuest II. Somehow that lends the impression you are not exactly engrossed in the virtual world or whatever you are doing there if you need or want to be watching a movie while playing. If what you are doing ingame is that uninteresting or full of downtime is that really fun?

  • TegamalTegamal Member Posts: 66

I was kinda wondering the same thing.

If I need a second PC to watch movies on while paying to play a game, I think I'd cancel.

It's hard to argue against having new experiences. I think WoW would be a good choice because it will give you yet one more game to add to your experiences.

If you're thinking about returning, why not return to EQ? If you quit when SWG was new I can tell you that game has made some pretty hefty changes since then.

  • TegamalTegamal Member Posts: 66

After SWG & EQ2, & now WoW, I don't think I could go back to EQ1.  It's just very dated.  I played it about a year ago when I had my station pass, but only to log on every once in a while.

Plus, all my old friends from years past seemed to be gone.  It's just not the same game that made me fall in love with MMOs so long ago.

  • AvadaleAvadale Member Posts: 17

Yeah, no matter how hard you try, you'll never be able to recapture the magic that was EQ1. Me and the wife tried that when the progression servers came out, and it just wasn't the same.

Many have recommended WoW, and it is a really good game... however... I really like the game, I just can't stand the community (no offense Wow players). We played WoW about a year ago or so, and left for other pastures. After being totally disillusioned by the current offerings, we returned to WoW about a month ago due to having some old EQ friends playing WoW. So we restarted a few new characters on a new server. Now, WoW's rap has always been the community (not the game for most), and with our first foray into the game, we met our share of immature players as well as plenty of great players. But when we returned, I simply could not believe what had happened since our departure. Every single time we logged in, something happened that just infuriated us. It's almost as if immature behavior has gotten so common place that it's become acceptable now. It's too bad, since I really like the game, and I know plenty of good people play the game, its just the minority of bad players makes it rather intolerable for us.

If you can get through the newbie areas and are OK with the community, then you should do fine with WoW - again, its a really good game.

Me and the wife are currently playing Lord of the Rings Online (after really wanting to like Vanguard - but... that's a whole other story), and it's "OK". My issue with LOTRO is the repetative content. You'll find your way to a little settlement among some ruins and be told to go kill X number of boars, bears and bats. When done, you are instructed to go explore another set of ruins and kill more boars, bears and bats. Then, when finally done, you are guided to yet another little friendly settlement among some ruins. On the way - you see more boars, bears and bats, however they are a little higher in level. Guess what your first set of quests are here? Kill more boars, bears and bats. Then... go explore this other unfriendly set of ruins... and... kill more boars, bears and bats. Then... (repeat this cycle of ruins over and over and over). ARRRGHHH.

Yes, I've already run into my fair share of "l337 5p33k" players in WoW, but so far have been able to ignore them.  Unfortunately, this is something I've come to expect for MMOs, so I was prepared for it.

With the South Park episode & the now infamous "Leroy Jenkins" incident, it seems like immaturity is almost encouraged within WoW.

I dont like wow, personally, think CoX is, righ now, one of the best, player creation is really funny, and if you like to rp is one of the best mmorpg around, the community is great and got lot of chances to take fun. The problem is some people says it can become repetitive and its not a fantasy game.

Guildwars: Is great, with no fees and lot of possibilities. The problem is that the community sucks, really, lot of aggroboy around trying to be the best crying and calling the others noob. Is the most aggresive game I ever saw. The other thing is that if you go pvp, surely, you will need to take some of the "usual" builds cause if you not you will be treated as a noob and probably you will never play tombs (hero ascend) or gvg... also, if you can play gvg you must use some copy/paste build from tv to do something ;) but the game still being great.

Also, if you want to, I know its not a mmorpg, but, perhaps you wanna try Neverwinter nights 2. It dont have fees, got a single/multiplayer campaign (you can play the history with your wife), and after this you can develop your own "world", misions, histories or join a world, where you can find things from pw (like mmorpg) to arenas or lot of other things.

Tried so many mmo's and the only one i stick with is EQ2.

If you are looking for a relative new game I would suggest Lord of the Rings Online,

but it's just not as good as EQ2. LotRO kept me going for 2 months, but then the fun was gone.

EQ2 still beats everything when it comes to stuff to do / fun / community. Graphics are still not outdated either.

New EQ2 expansion pack will be released in around a month.

Not sure if the original game + all previous expansions will be included, but if it does: might be a great option for you.

I appreciate all the suggestions & opinions.  They've put alot into perspective.  I'm going to stick with WoW for now, but if it starts to wear out, I'll definitely go back to EQ2.

I enjoy hearing all of your opinions, & welcome more, so don't stop on my account!

I would wait for one of the new MMOs that are coming out.  Tabula Rasa should be out pretty soon I believe and there are a slew of good looking MMOs coming out between now and all of next year.  Why waste your time when it seems like you have played most of the current decent MMOs out there to play?  These new MMOs will be a fresh exciting experience for everyone instead of starting in the same old world where everything has been done already.

  • TegamalTegamal Member Posts: 66

That's just it, though.  I've never played WoW before, & so far it's fresh & new to me.

I'll always be on the lookout for new games, as well.

Thats true though my experience has been that the community has been far more enjoyable when the game is brand new.  I think when WoW first came out it wasn't so bad as everyone was learning the game, people were more willing to group, and there was no focus on raiding as there was no molten core yet.  I think the community is getting worse and worse and this seems to happen in all MMOs when they start to get stale.  I believe you would enjoy the experience of playing in a new game where everyone is just learning the ropes.  People are usually a lot more open minded at that point in the games life.

  • TegamalTegamal Member Posts: 66

    I agree completely.

I always keep my eyes open for something new & exciting, & when something comes along that grabs my attention, I'll try it.
