Mouse Buttons

DeivosDeivos Member EpicPosts: 3,692

I was trying to design a combat system, and ran across an issue of compatibility. So I'm just trying to get an idea of what the most common amount of buttons there are on most mice today.

Edit: My computer doesn't like me to capitalize my i's.

Edit2!: I'm counting the wheel as one button, even if you can click and scroll it. And any additional buttons with singular functions like the sensitivity ones on my mouse are excluded...which still means I have four buttons...

    5 buttons under your conditions.

    -Left click and right click

-mouse wheel up and down and mouse wheel click

-two mouse thumb buttons (four+ would be awesome)

-two buttons controlling mouse sensitivity: one above the mouse wheel and one below

-another button that I'm not sure of it's function (it has a box overlapping another box that makes it looks like it represents scrolling through different windows 'like alt-tab' but it doesn't do that) is located right under the mouse sensitivity button under the mouse wheel.  I don't even use this button due to awkward positioning.

I have only used the mouse sensitivity buttons for FPS. (when you use a scope on a rifle your mouse sensitivity drops and I can counter this)

5: Left click, right click, left side, right side, scroll wheel.

In the past I have had mice with up to 8, but when I game I normally use three, four at most depending on the game.

Oki, my main issue was just wondering if people had a minimum of three buttons, the two standard, and the somewhat standard mouse wheel (able to click down on it).

Looks like the standard is more than that.

I think a mouse should have 108 buttons.  You won't even need a keyboard anymore.

Scroll up, scroll down, click scroll-wheel, 4 extra buttons because it's a gamer mouse and the two usual buttons. 9 buttons totally, and yes I do actually use all of them.

    I use Microsoft Habu.

Razer Copperhead has 7 buttons but i can only use 5 since the other 2 are tucked back under a lip where no human pinky should ever be able to reach.

I used to use the Razer Copperhead but it died on me a few months back.  I went and bought the Logitech G5.   I prefer the feel of holding the Copperhead, but the button placement on the G5 is much better.  Also, the copperhead would always bring my cursor to the front when using an extra button. This did not work well with WoW, since I used the mouse to move (not P&C).   If you're going to buy a new mouse, I would recommend the G5.  I haven't checked any of the new Razer stuff, but I definitely didn't like the button placement on the copperhead.  The firmware update was a pain in the ass too.  One thing that was good about the Copperhead was how it stored your bindings in the mouse.  Overall, I still prefer the G5 over the Razer, since I bought the mouse specifically for the buttons.
