I purchased EVE about a year ago and tried getting into it. The graphics were beautiful and the game seemed interesting, but I quickly felt lost.
My first problem was that it seemed the galaxy truly was a vast and empty void, and I rarely managed to talk to any players because I couldn't find anyone around. Next was that I couldn't find anything to do. I absolutely detest asteroid harvesting, I focused my character creation on being a warship, but I could not find a single thing to fight. I simply felt cold and alone and didn't renew the account. Will I have a better go if I try it out now? I should mention that I am another E&B refugee.

I have been playing Eve since release and I, at many times, felt lost and alone in the seemingly endless expanses of space. However, I overcame those feelings by exploring to my hearts content. I have met some wonderful people playing this game and I still to this day, learn something new everyday. Eve is not the same game it was a year ago. If you give it another shot, I'm sure you'll think you are playing another game entirely. Don't be afraid to socialize and utilize your ingame chat channels, that btw are much more defined now, to select your path in game and become a truly lethal combat veteran (as you stated before) The NPC system is much more lucrative now. However, for many encounters outside of Empire space (>.5 Security Rating) you MUST work with a team in order to be successful. I promise you that you will not be disappointed if you try again. As a matter of fact, if you want, you can send me an email with your character name, if you do return, and I assure you that we will make your stay in Eve a pleasurable one.
See ya ingame!

Man, I am in the same boat as you. I had played the game a few months after release and had played during beta but because in beta I tested the game and never got far before release I had no idea what I was doing when I did try the release. I quickly gave up that try because then mining was still a huge part of the game.
I recently did the 7 day trial and here is what I think you will find as these are the things I found. I too am a very war oriented player. I built my char to go out and destroy wonderful things and to enjoy big space battles in cool systems and stuffs. There is now a tutorial (which I don't remember having the last time I tried the game) that really explains how to get started well. There is also as Gilette mention the revamped NPC system (agents being a huge way to make money for a fighting player). Once your done with the tutorial missions you should already have enough ISK for some skills and your next frigate. From there you can work towards the top frigate of your choice. To get money as a fighting character the security agent missions work REALLY well. I make all the money I need from the agents and I get to kill to do it. I also take time out to go hunting rat spawns when I get tired of missions and can make a fair income from the loot. So all in all if fighting is your game you can definately get your fix. Especially with the 14 day free trial MMORPG.com is running I would say TRY IT!
Feel free to hit me up in game if you want any suggestions. Send an eve-mail or start a convo with me anytime. Name in game is Dien.

I started player about a year ago as well and was lucky to join a decent corp with great players. It is a very hard game to "go it alone". I would recommend you join a good corp and get a bit of direction.
The game has changed a lot in the past year and a lot more people play now. So empire space is very rarely empty. It is also (despite what people may say) a lot more stable and less buggy.
I would definitely recommend you give it another go for the 14-day trial.

What about this issue with the griefers? You notice I am saying griefers and not the pvpers as a whole. I have heard the griefers are getting out of hand and ganking newbies a lot. I don't want to go back to the game to only be ganked over and over by some dude in a cruiser or a more advanced frigate.
Unless these "griefers" are at war with your corporation, then there is no way you would be at risk unless you were in 0.0 Security Space. If you are New to the game, you should NOT be venturing into 0.0 Security Space.

I was looking into the game every once in awhile and there were griefers getting into high security areas because of some bug or something and was happening a lot. CCP was trying to update the game to stop it but I heard that wasn't working all that well.
Btw I like pvp and only got a problem with these high equiped guys going after newbies.
There are methods (legit) that allow low security rated players to enter Federation Space (0.1+ Security Rated Systems) However, the basic principals of combat in Fed. Space still apply. So again, unless you are at war with the individual(s), there is no reason to fear.
My advice, let the idiot fire on you... then wait 30 secs and collect his "uber" loot from the wreckage.

So try again, fill it with your corporation, be a pirate or an explorer. EVE is a fine game but you cannot evaluate it properly just by playing the trial.

Excelent advice, in secure space only an idiot and a complete moroon shoots first. The turrets, ouch.

What you might be thinking of is the people at the gates that lock on to you and freak you out in hopes you shoot at them. In that case you get blown to heck by the guards and they collect your loot. If someone locks on to you unless your in unsafe space or are at war with them do not shoot at them! Just ignore them. lol.

I think "griefing" happens a lot less than it used to. People still steal your ore if it is in a non-secure can. But apart from that nothing goes on. Someone killing you in a 0.4 and lower (away from stations and gates) is only playing the game how he wants in my opinion and is not griefing. If you can't handle yourself in these systems then don't go there.
You will find a lot of pirates "tanking" sentries guns in 0.4 systems and lower because of a lack of police battleship presence. Again this is allowed. If you can't afford to loose something then don't take it out of your hanger into a 0.4- system. Simple as that.

EVE universe is a harsh place as it should. I think piracy itself is not grifing it is allowed gameplaying style. Without pirates there would be lot less fun and definately lot less contet in the game. Piracy is a form of playing that should be accepted as a part of the game but not tolerated, thus bountyhunters and stuff. If someone want's to be a pirate so be it, let the bountyhunters and the game "law" take care of them. And if we ever go to stars in this style in real-life couldn't there also be spacepirates? I think this career choice add's to realism and thus is good for the game.

Yeah. I totally agree. If players are carefull in 0.4 and below it is not very hard to avoid people pirating. Just a quick look on the map. See if there are players on your route. Check "Pod Kills" in the last hour. If you are mining in one of these systems just keep an eye out on local checking peoples info when they enter it. If they have a negative sec rating check out the corp details and make an educated decision on if you stay in the belt.

Maybe I will try the game again then. I started playing it in beta and played for a bit after Eve went gold. I left because all my buddies quit and the game got pretty lonely. Early start of the game really didn't see much griefing if at all. Mainly somebody stealing somebody else's ore was the big "griefing" issue but then you shouldn't just leave your ore in containers while there are people you don't know around. People were too busy trying to get their arsenal up and strategic spots claimed to mess with the newbie killing. I only heard about how bad the griefing got because I checked in on the game several times. CCP having to increase the range of the turrets and I heard of increasing the damage because the heavy Cruisers and Battleships could survive long enough to destroy a ship(frigate of course), crack the pod and get to saftey.
Just so you understand, I do agree with you Hollbron and Mordok about what is griefing. Heading into .4 and lower security areas makes you game so you better be prepared. I do like pvp and was hoping to get into some big battles but I only got up to a light cruiser.
