Virtual Spam... who woulda thunk it?

OMG!

What is with the ads for power leveling and gold in LOTRO?  I used to get one or two every week.  Last night I log in after being away for a few days.  I had at least 12 mail messages in my box and received three private messages within the first hour I was online.

I realize that there are certain risks involved when a game includes a inter-character mail system, but this is just ridiculous.  Every message that I have received for free gold has had the same content too.   You would think that the LOTRO programmers could just block any game mail with "gagora.com" in it.  Can't they do something?  Anything?  How about block the IP of violators?  This way they can't create a new account 10 minutes later.

If LOTRO was a free game, I wouldn't mind all that much... but I don't pay a monthly fee to be advertised to.  Actually.  I wouldn't even mind some passive advertisement like an in-game sign or text from an npc.  This; however, is plain harassment.  Turbine needs to do something, I just don't know if it will ever happen.

Do they not have a delete button? Don't get so worked up over something so trivial. Its bad for your health.

    It TOTALLY breaks my immersion

Really though I just don't see how the gold sellers are making any money off this game. For the most part the community seems pretty mature and not the "instant gratification" types that would blow real cash on uber gear or whatever. Not to mention money comes really easy in the game, and it's not like you need the best gear to PvP other players who have great gear.

I would think gold sellers would be better off focusing their attention on some other games, but maybe the subscription numbers are high enough in LOTRO that if only 0.05% of the spam resulted in a sale then they are making money off it.

  • GadorianGadorian Member Posts: 87

LoL i am not killer, but damn if i see gold seller in real life i kill him for all that spam he make

I agree with the sentiment of the post (anti spammers), however, the in game advertising would be FAR worse.

Sure, it's annoying to receive these tells, and sure, it breaks your immersion for a moment. But, if I were crusing through Bree and saw a billboard advertising a Nike shoe, that would permenantly destroy any hope of immersion ever again. Its always going to be there in your face. The day this happens is the day I quit.

It shouldn't be the players' job to have to deal with it and delete spam. Trivial or not, getting spammed is NOT what they pay for.

After some more thought, I completely agree with you.  An out-of-place ad would completely destroy one's immersion into the game world.  Of course... my hunter could really use a pair of good Nike's.

If a game company care more about the rights and priveledges of the spammers and gold sellers than their actual costumers, then that is nto a company to support with money.. I am sure they get a good amount already formt he gold sellers since they dont want to remove them, so they really dont need your money.

Only way to deal with it.. Support the companies that stop gold sellers and other spammers, and let the companies that let them roam free die in silence. If you pay money to a company that support gold sellers, then YOU are the one saying its ok.

They should follow in the footsteps of Blizzard:

    1. Stops all trial accounts from sending in-game mail

    2. Allow players to report gold seller spammer with a click of a single button.

    3. Disable chat (private messages, etc.) for 1 minute that sends messages to multiple people with url for more than 3 times every 30 seconds.

Oh yeah here's a tip... go anonymous (press the anonymous button under options) you won't ever show up on /who hence spammers can't get to you, but of course if you are LFG you won't show up there too.

God I wish turbine /CM would do this ! I just feel that they are really not that bothered

  • GrindalyxGrindalyx Member UncommonPosts: 657

All this stuff is on the way. The trial accounts are already limited in no in game mail, to tells, and no personal trades or using of the AH. They are working on it. I just don't think that they expected it to be so bad. And from what i understand it is no were as near as bad as it is or was in wow. WoW doesn't have a handle on it any better than any other game. So the WOW players who are in my kinship in lotro tell me. So WOW is not the great gold seller spammer killer you all make it out to be.

Square's done an awesome job of knocking out or otherwise hindering alot of the RMT in FFXI.

They've also begun penalizing the buyers, not just the sellers.

    I rather like that approach.

I set myself to Anonymous in LoTRO; haven't had a spam mail or /tell since.

One shouldn't have to set themselves to annonymous. I am a leader of a kinship and i can't afford to do this. If i did i would be cutting myself off to people who may be interested in my kinship. I won't do that nor should i have too. Besides doing so is basically saying that the gold sellers win and dictate how you play your game to avoid them.

Wow... you read wayyyy too much into what I was saying. For one, if you check my track record of posting on the issue of RMT and gold buyers, you'll find that I'm quite vehemently and vocally against it. I can't stand RMT and I can't stand the cheaters who support it by buying their way through a game with all their lame excuses/rationalizations; not to mention all the related activities.

Particularly in this game where if you use maybe 2 brain cells you can figure out a number of good ways to make money. By the time I hit level 14 I was making enough money, with no more than an hour or two invested a few times a week at most, to keep myself more than well-enough equipped and have not been left wanting for anything since.  Money is easy to make and good gear is easy to come by, if you're not too lazy to actually put forth the minimal effort. Of course, for someone who would rather cheat by buying their way around the game instead of actually playing it, any effort is too much, I guess. They're forever striving for that "I Win" button.

However, that said... Until Turbine have found a way to deal with RMT on a more aggressive and/or permanent basis, I'm not going to stand around, arms folded defiantly, and continue to receive /tells and in-game spam from these bozos. They're annoying and I don't want to be bothered. Thus, for now, I set myself as anonymous and can enjoy the game in peace. I'm not saying everyone should do that. Just that it's what I'm doing.

Having a trial account is a REAL balancing act, for the publisher/designer. You want people interested in your product to have an experience as close to the real thing as possible, yet at the same time you have to steel yourself against the people who jump on the chance to abuse the trial for their seedy acts. While I'm disapointed that tells/AH/ect/ect have been disabled, there's a small amount of solace that spammers/gold farmers are having problems getting the word out.

LOL. No i didn't read way to much into it. You made a comment to just put yourself on annonymous and i commented one shouldn't have to do so and that as a Kinship leader i can't afford to do so and cut myself off from possible recruits. Hey if you want to put yourself on ignore great. I can't do that so i report all and any tells and mail from these creeps.

I hate them just as much as you do and i often reply back to them telling them to go play with themselves and die while doing it. All i was doing was stating the reasons why i don't go annonymous and that i don't feel people should have to do so. I am all for hunting down these scum and publically ridiculing them. But unfortunately we can't do that .

That is such a cool feature actually...My mailbox is clean, and then here is this junk tab...kinda like a real email system...and there is all the junk ready to be deleted...awesome

And how about that tell system...it can recognize when a tell is spam, and blocks the message...but has a VIEW button so you can read it if you wish...

I have yet to read even one...and can continue to play and not be annoyed...awesome!
