The only free MMORPG that I've ever played was Anarchy-Online, which does have alot of PvE and PvP (can't say much about how many people play it - haven't played in a while).

This may not be your cup of tea however (or cup of <insert beverage here>). It's an older mmorpg with not alot of polish. Its not what I would say newbie friendly or a casual game, and has dated graphics, however its fairly complex and deep. If you can get past the rough graphics, UI and mechanics, and have some time to commit to it, its not a bad game.

well, if its free it means that is not that good, or they would be charging for it, they charge for crap games too.

you said you already play some paid games, continue playing them or stop paying them to pay for another, there is a lot for you to choose if you can pay for them

Sheesh, give the person a break. It's far better to get a general consensus from a group of people than relying one one (possibly biased) review.

    100% Agree here :)

i find it hard to base a game on a " website/screenshots", far more relieable if u ask people who actually took their time to play it :)

the problem with other peoples opinions... is...well... they are other peoples.

I might think wow is the best game EVER and if you dont play it I dont understand!

I might also think that guild wars is the best game and not understand how you dont like it.

Your question is rather general, and describes most of the free games available on the market atm... whether they are worth playing is a totally different can of worms.

The other issue with the free games is most of them are hardcore pvp (Open non consentual that I love but most hate) and heavily grind oriented (5 - 10 hours per level post 60)

SOTNW(www.swordofthenewworld.com)  for instance, the game Im currently playing. Its a grind game... I hate grinding... and K2 is totally inept when it comes to running a game well... but its free and entertaining, and quite frankly there isnt anything else to play atm. If there was Id be gone.

It all depends on what types of games you like. The few who told you to go down the games list and read had good points. Best way to find the health of a game is to check its official general forum. If you see 20000 posts complaining, and no posts that are happy its probably not a good deal. If they are closer to equal then the game is worth a shot, and if its all positives its either a great game... or only the hardcore fanbois are left.

Anyways good luck in your search.

Free games with both PvE and PvP that are remotely worth looking at.

The list is quite short I'm afraid:

    Anarchy Online

    Guild Wars

    Shadowbane

Since you've already eliminated the first two...

In any case, Shadowbane is rather old, the original development team is long gone, the servers are being maintained out of a sympathetic dev's pocket money, and there is no ingame support. On  top of that, about 2/3 servers are practically owned by someone, be it gold farmers or just superguilds that managed to take over every single resource node. On the plus side, it is one of the very few games with truly free for all PvP left in the genre.

right now i have 3 free games installed on my computer and i'm currently not subscribed to any, nor is there any worth 15 bucks a month.

    perfect world (my-ch)

    anarchy online

    voyage century

all very not bad, all very good for f2p mmos.

Ever hear the expression "you get what you pay for"?

Well, it applies to MMO's too. Guild Wars is probably the only thing you'll find with a lot of people and free to play. It's doing a lot better than quite a few of the pay to play MMO's.

Only caveat about guild wars is you'll probably feel compelled to dump a bunch of cash to buy all the games (or "chapters" they call them) out there, and for that price you might as well buy a pay to play MMO with 3 months or more of game time for the same price.

That's pretty much why I didn't get into guild wars. People say you don't need to buy all the chapters, but you lose a lot of options if you don't.

Not a whole lot out there other than the ones you listed.  Me I'm playing eq2 until aoc comes out.  Have alot of great friends there, trying to get them to come to aoc with me, when the game goes live.   Might want to look in to 9 dragons and a few other free to play.  Think that is pvp/pve.

Once you buy the box, there's no monthly fee for guildwars.

as you say, "buy the box", in others words, it isnt free

I've very recently jumped into the realm of F2P's, and I will say that there is a wide variety of them out there.  The thing with F2P's is that you won't get the kind of graphics and in game support that many P2P's get, but you can still find some pretty fun games.

Sword of the New World looks like good eye candy so far, and probably has some of the better graphics out of any F2P, but I haven't had time to play it, so I can't really comment there, other than it looks good graphically.

Games I have played and had fun with:  SilkRoad, 2Moons, 9Dragons, Rappelz, Anarchy Online, Dungeon Runners, and Age of Armor (still in a beta phase there, may or may not end up being F2P).  And I have heard good things about Perfect World, although you will have to look at their wiki to see how to get it to play in English (an English release should be coming out in a few days though).

Another option I can throw out, is to try Neverwinter Nights or Neverwinter Nights 2, and look into their Persistent Worlds.  There are a few good ones.

Look under the game list link of this website, and it will give a good list games you can check out.  The list will tell you if the game is P2P or F2P.  Good luck, and have fun!

Ah, Shadowbane...long live Mourning and the server wide wars.  The graphics aren't all that great, but if you are into PVP, then that game is definitely worth it.  The only spot that you are safe from PVP is noob isle.

I remember the late night and early morning bane defenses, massive player battles, and numerous crashes due to so much happening on the screen at once.  Good times.

Not really much of anything on the PVE side though.

Very easy answer>>>>SILKROAD.Free has alot of players especially on peak times/korean ,where your lucky to login. It has pve and PVP and a sorta unique system in place with HUNTERS/THIEVES/TRADERS.

Basically once you hit level 20,i think it's still level 20,you can take part in the trade routes industry. You can become a trader guiding your caravan through dangerous mobs/enemies to another town, where you make a profit.Often traders have to hire within there guild or outsource to HUNTERS who help to protect there caravan. While all this is happening there are the players who enjoy being a THIEF !A thief will try to attack the caravan waiting for  perfect timing, either in numbers or sometimes alone if there strong enough.

In the beginning with heal pots spammed non stop the system was really all level based. Now with limited use on heal pots[timed] a high level can be taken down, albeit is still very hard. The game uses elements like Fire/Earth/Ice/Lightning to achieve it's attacking damage.

    Fire=burn/strength build/DOT.

Lightning =Agility buff/debuffs./str or int build damage.

    Earth=root/aoe

Ice=Frozen status ,nice when multi low levels can PROC the frostbite effect on a higher level making them totally immobile and susceptible to defeat.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
