For all of us who are seeking a new mmo and being disappointed time after time.... is it over? Has the game world passed us by for all eternity?
I honestly thought that either WAR or AoC would be the next game for me.... almost as strongly as I mistakenly thought Vanguard would be.... I figured... here are two titles from companies I trust... they have to be good!!!
Based on the latest information I am already disappointed in both... no basis in fact you say.... I'm not arguing that point due to NDA I say. I'm not saying they will be terrible... not like Vanguard (at least BOTH wont be), but they are not going to cut it for many of us....
I've moved on to Aion... hoping that it will provide the next lasting world for me to adventure on.... but each time my hopes are dashed I'm less willing to believe in the next big title.
The developers may have left us behind..... maybe its nearing time to accept it and move on...... maybe all of MMORPG will become one big forum for reminiscing like the SWG veterans forum is now!
I've decided to throw in the towel for now.... I'll still be around here from time to time... but I'm going to try to walk away from MMO's for as long as I can stand it... as it is I havent been playing anything hardly at all for nearly 8 months.
Maybe by the time I return the Genre will once again have something to offer me, and maybe not. (But then again, the reality is I'll be stir crazy once it starts snowing again and I'll probably grudgingly return to one of the old standby MMO's that I'm so tired of it hurts)
I've proposed all kinds of ideas on these forums in the past... now I've gotten to the point where I dont even know what would draw me back in (besides nostalgia).....
I guess I've just lost faith.

I'll join yah. I put my faith into hoping Tabula Rasa would be great and it dashed them.
Waiting on ...

Aion
AoC
L3 ? ...... =/
To anyone that can stand Korean grinders ... the MMO scene is looking good .. to everyone else ... sucks to be you
get a console ... really ... stop whining ....
I've found that the easiest way for me to combat this very issue is to simply not get excited about a new game. I've been looking since UO to get that "magic" back, and that feeling will probably never come. That's fine, of course, but you'd think *something* good would come out. There are decent MMOs, of course... but nothing I am personally able to dedicate any huge amount of my (precious) time to.
My hope is that POTBS or a Bioware SW MMO would do the trick. I've got WAR on order just in case, but can't say I'm overly thrilled about it. (See how easy my new method is? )
Maybe you're right, though. Maybe it has simply "passed us by".
I've Been Feeling the Same way...What Happened to all the good Games....Im' waiting on a Game called Dawn and hopefully it doesnt dissapoint me...

I went backpacking once two years ago, and I talk about thetrip as absolutely awesome: gorgeous scenery, beautiful weather, good campfire cooking, etc. Despite all of that, I have vivid memories of running down a hill in the dark screaming "SPIDER!", horrific sunburn, and swearing I'd never backpack again for the rest of my life.
My point is, we all think of our first games as "the best", and we all see the "current" as mere shadows of our past excellent. Time heals all wounds, to some extent, and we don't remember the shortcomings of our UO, L1, and EQ days. Truth be told, our industry seems to be in an awkward, teenagery sort of growth stage - we're exploring new technology, new AI, new graphics, and beyond that we're trying to put forward fresh and new content for a userbase that is cynical and suspicious (yes, I am too! You don't see me rooting for any games...). I'm not excusing any of our current or upcoming games for any shortcomings, but...don't worry, it could be worse, it will be better, the end is not here

Anyways, I remember Dark and Light..."OMG BEST GAME EVER!"...shortly after "OMG WORSTEST GAME EVAR"
just one example out of many.
Actully did play WAR at a convention. It was alot of fun what little I played. I was just trying to make the point that for all of those who are disapointed in a game before it is even out, their are just as many who will be in line on launch day and never got a moment of playing time before hand.

Waiting for= PSU, WAR
I hear you, I have been like this for a while myself... Seems like I am just always waiting for a game to release heh.
WAR isnt designed to be the game you are looking for from what I have seen... It's gonna be good and successful and all that in it's own right I am sure, but it looks to be a MMOAG (massively multiplayer action game) rather then a MMORPG to be. Same with Tabula Rasa. AoC is looking very pretty etc, but right now I havent seen any game play that is knocking my socks off, and I am yet to see RvR working so I am hesitant about that for the moment...
PotBS looks kinda cool and Fallen Earth has the potentiol to work out well, but the last hope for me is Chronicles of Spellborn. If this dosent work out then I am sticking to single player games and PnP D&D.
Tbh, the entire gaming industry, not just MMORPGs, is suffering from the same malaise of less innovation, less challenge, less value, and yet evermore hype.
In short, yep, the golden age of gaming has passed, and while there may be a few standout games that come along now and again, most of what got you hooked in the first place has been taken out and replaced with the almighty dollar. Shame really.
No, Chicken Little, it's not over. Next post please.
To the OP
I so much agree with you. Every new video of WAR is a new disapointment. AOC, well i just do not belive they will manage to pull it off, and constant release delays show it. POTBS will be niche , very much niche. Tabula rasa , well now that NDA is broken we know where it stands, and its not good at all. G&H will be cute , but thats all. Aion is asian game, so i expect it to be grind fest ....
Shall I go on ?
Maybe 2010 or 2011 will be good game for MMOs ?
To bad , since 2012 is end of the world according to Nostradamus
One day my friends....one day we'll find what we had with mmorpg's , i'd say a year or 4/5....until then it's just going from one mmorpg to another.Have faith
Dec 20, 2012 to be accurate, as thats also the end of the Mayan Calender.

As some of you guys mentioned before i nowadays think the same. It really has something to do with the "first game addiction = best game" thingy.
I thought about this from time to time and today i believe it to be true.
I had that experience when i stopped playing D2 the moment i received my closed beta invite for DAoC.
DAoC was my 24/7 game then for the years to come post my D2 addiction. After DAoC, the beatiful times with my small RvR guild and all the fun i had in DAoC, i've yet to find a game that brings this "good ol' times" back.
Far away from being a 24/7 player nowadays i still miss a game that just makes me want to log in and not want to log off
I don't think the golden age of games has passed. It's just some of us being around a little longer playing online games and we've grown up.
The first news i heard of Mythic making a new game, -> WAR, i was like yeah, bring on the good old DAoC in a Warhammer coat... But the more i follow the title being in development, and how it seems to be being final, ... i more and more have that strange feeling that it's just wishful thinking and nostalgic dreams, hehe.
Let's see, let's see...
I understand how you feel as it is no different for me. I am playing eve online right now but I am rather bored of it (after 3 years).
The problem I see is that we all have played so many RPGs/grindfests/fantasy games ala WoW that its not new and exciting anymore. We have killed countless orcs, we have killed dragons of all sizes, we have killed all possible types of demons people can imagine. Killing some random creep simply isnt fun anymore. Its even worse. Every new MMO just gives you a deja vu feeling of "been there, done that". The enemys are mostly the same, the quests are the same, the game mechanics are nearly the same, the rewards are the same, the risks are the same or not existant.
I believe that only something revolutionary will draw me back to PVEing. Right now PvP is the only place for me to have fun or to say it differently: The only place to find a real challenge. I have been following WAR and AOC as well but I am losing more interest every time new information is released. It seems to me that most MMO developers are still trying to appeal to the huge mass of casual players using old formulas and known environments (orc/elf slaying fantasy worlds). New stuff and radical or revolutionary setups are seen as too huge a risk to take. Why get something new when the old formulas work?
At some point the MMO industry will have to move on. All we can do is wait and hope for the best. Who knows? Maybe the "veterans and oldschool" players which are mostly adults really have gone past gaming. Maybe its time to realize it and move on.

i still play wow w/my gf because i don't like any beta's i'm in. hoping potbs to be the one.
many good things have been said and some i agree with and some i don't.
we just have to wait on the independent devs to bring new ideas to our games. no one big likes to try anything new.
die.
Well said, Inf666!
I smiled while reading what you've expressed in your last sentences. Just because i kind of think the same way.
Funny ... i just said to the guys i play with since D2/DAoC times a few weeks ago, if WAR turns out to be not the PvP/RvR game i hoped for since we all stopped playing DAoC-RvR, I'll quit playing online. Maybe it's not because the games we're offered atm are bad, maybe it's just because it's really getting old and boring and i'm done with it.
Honestly the only times i enjoy nowadays are alpha/beta-stages of online games (if I'm lucky being in, of course). At least the other players around are generally polite and talkative. It's kind of a community feeling and a fun time that totally changes, when games go live! Another sad aspect online gaming has today.
The same problem here for example is that PvE can be fun, ... sometimes But i like the challenge, too, that real players offer. And i love team-based PvP just like DAoC's system. The environment can be elves, orcs and the typical fantasy setting, i'd had no problem with that. _IF_ developers finally start making it fun being there, and not just pretending to when they give interviews etc.
As i said before, let's see, let's see...
It is probably just about over for me as well.
The only game thats keeping my attention now is FFXI, once its dead, im more than likely done with mmo's.
WAR and AoC just aint offering what I want.
prolly gonna pick up a xbox360.
