...of forcing someone into a perspective. FP-MMO's seem to be the big thing in the coming days. Me personally, I HATE playing in first person. The only time I enjoy first person is in shooters, like Halo, Half-Life, etc. I don't understand the harm in giving people the option to play in either third or first person. So with that being said, I am curious to see if I am off my meds again, or if others share my opinion, hence the poll below. Discuss.

Heyas Charisi!
Think of it in terms of 'atmosphere'. 3rd person, everything is revealed, no suprises, pan the camera and react. So what if people are trying to hide?
1st person... paranoia (sp?) ensues. Your not sure where everyone is, teamwork is paramount, suprises around every corner.
I can DEFINANTLY see the purpose of forcing 1st person into a specific game genre (FPS's), but not for all game types of course. imho, I think 1st person, or at the very max: over the sholder cam, would be atmosphericly correct for a spy game. But that's just me. I'm sure there are people who are passionatly opposed to my opinion.
Yeah but my point was that many people will stay away from games like this, myself included. If I'm going to play a twitch game, and sit around and FPS all day, Im going to bust out some BF2, Halo, or Half Life. I'm certainly not going to pay someone 15 bucks a month to play an FPS all day. Sadly it seems more and more games that are on the horizon are forcing players into first person.

But charsi, the game is a persistent first person shooter. In that respect, you can argue why you should pay a subscription for the agency when you can play bf1942 online for free. At this time, there is no counterargument but considering how SOE is looking at different revenue models, it sounds like they don't expect the argument to hold water either.
Anyway, aside from being an fps, ratfather actually makes good points about the first person perspective lending itself well to the spy genre with regards to trust and suspsicions that are always at play (obviously this rational posting only came about since he broke into the double-digit post counts -hahah : ' )
from some screenies it appears to be a mix of FPS and 3rd person, yet the camera is always behind the player instead of able to pan around. I love FPS'ers and the fact you can develope the toon you are and evolve them makes it appealing to me.
But to each their own.
I gotta disagree with Ratfather about the suspense and immersion aspect being increased by the first-person perspective. I'm thinking here of games like Max Payne which were fully in the 3rd person (so you could enjoy all your toon's cool flashy moves) yet still extremely tense and challenging. As long as you keep the camera angle nice and close, it's still possible to create plenty of suspense with a non-FPS view, while still having a crosshair to guide your aim for arcade firing.
Personally I much prefer this style of play, so I'm hoping they at least give us the option. That said, I'm also an avid FPS player so if Sony can't deliver on this front it's not the end of the world. There will still be plenty of interactive areas where your toon will be in 3rd person I imagine, so you can enjoy their snappy clothes and razor-sharp stylees. Either way this game stands to be such a breath of fresh air in this stale MMO universe, I'd be lying if I said I'm not dying for a taste. Pessimism be damned, it's fun to dream!
Edit: oops, wrong paragraph switches
Looks like the Matt Wilson interview (see MMORPG article below) clears up this issue nicely: looks like you have the CHOICE of First-Person or Over-the-Shoulder view in combat areas, and can switch between the two freely any time (with the exception of sniper scope which is obviously FPS-only). So everyone's a winner!

Im an oblivion player, as such, i like to explore in third person, do combat in first person, especially with fps games, i cant bang those headshots in third person.

in this game, as has been stated previously u will be able to switch b/w first and third person modes
i personely play most non MMOs in first person like oblivion and shooters and any other game that lets me be first person
but in mmos i like 3rd person because u can see everything around u witch is key. That being said in this game i plan on doing most everything in first person unless i find that first person is only good for combat then i will do 3rd for everything but combat
The key thing is that it's not forced either way (except sniping obviously) so that is good to me
Yes to be forced to play one perspective is a bit limiting. If you are playing an mmo that is atmospheric it is beneficial for you to pan in 3rd person to be immersed in the flow and style of the game. It would be impossible to play a game like EVE or WOW in 1st person because of the target combat structure. But the emphasis on 1st person vs 3rd person is genre specific. I definitely wouldn't play a true FPS twitch style game totally in 3rd person unless i wanted to purposely lower my k/d ratio. Yet I would want to have the option to switch from 1st to 3rd person fluidly to get a better perspective of my surroundings and for tactical reasons. Ratfather is totally correct in his explanation of the different styles for each genre. As far as any game forcing you to play in one perspective or another, I think is limiting on the part of the dev team.. Every game should have the option IMO. Ever y person who plays a game for any length of time gets used to the perspective whether it is in 3rd 1st or both. Crossing over from one perspective to the other is challenging at first but after a while you will get used to it or you will drop the game totally for a genre that best fits you. I am first an foremost a FPS player. Quake, Unreal, PS, Bf2142, CS and even wolfenstein. So i am very biased when it comes to 1st person vs 3rd person. But I would not goto another game in another genre and say it is best played in 1st person..I would be dead wrong because I would trust the people who play these games as they know best from experience. And in my experience any true FPS game should be played first in 1st person and secondly in 3rd person.
I'm really happy that this game is going to allow the freedom to chose.
I'm one of the unlucky people who get headaches from playing FPS games for too long. I get it to a far less degree in 3rd person 'over the shoulder' perspectives. It's probably an issue with 'field of view' or rapid free mouse look. But for whatever reason, 3rd person games are far more bearable for me.
As long as the camera is fixed over the shoulder, I don't see why there would be any difference in terms of gameplay. Gears of War is the best example of how I wish every single shooter was made.
But I have to admit that there is a difference in immersion. In FPS perspective, you feel like you are in the game. In 3rd person perspective, I usually feel like I'm controlling someone else who is in the game.
For The Agency, I'll probably play in first person during the combat, and third person in all the other scenarios.
