Tabula Rasa: Release Date Confirmed

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Yesterday Managing Editor Jon Wood attended an event at Richard Garriot's home where he learned that Tabula Rasa would be released on October 19th. Today, NCsoft has sent out the official announcement.

Austin, Texas, September 6, 2007-- NCsoft®, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announced today that Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa® has reached gold master status and will launch commercial service in North America and Europe on October 19, 2007. Pre-order customers will begin their three-day head start on October 16.

One of the most anticipated PC games of the year, Tabula Rasa is gaming legend Richard Garriott's newest title, which combines a vast, persistent game world and rich storyline with fast paced action. Set in a near-future science fiction storyline, players create characters that must fight to save humanity against hostile alien enemies while trying to gain control of the universe. The game introduces several innovative elements to massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, including a Character Cloning System™ that allows players to explore different character classes without having to create a new character, and dynamic battlefields where players experience the frenetic action of combat in an ongoing war.

"It has been a heck of a journey," said Richard Garriott, the game's executive producer. "The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning. I think we've managed to do something truly unique and I hope that the gaming community likes it as much as we do. Now, I am looking forward to a really fun 'end of beta event' for our incredible testers, and focusing development on new planets and innovations for future expansions of Tabula Rasa."

The standard edition box of Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa will be available at major online retailers at an expected retail price of $49.99 and at the PlayNC® store (https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl). Customers will be able to purchase the recently announced Limited Collector's Edition box from major retailers at an expected retail price of $69.99. Both products include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. Sixty-day game time cards will also be available at many North American retailers for an expected retail price of US$29.99. The game is rated Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

Yeah. It really is. I don't see this game being ready for release in a month and a half, either.

Just noticed they are giving away beta-keys over at Gamespot, gonna give it a try myself.

    Over-Hyped.

    Over-Priced.

    Under-Developed.

    Going to be another V:SoH.

Without SoE Station Pass to keep it alive.

Needs another full year of development and testing.

Funny, I was just going to say the situation is eerily similar to Auto Assault. And from what I've seen from the dev team to date, it's going to go the same way in short order.

Cool game and concept that is going to get released too early unless the devs have a magic "fix-all" patchfest and add some more content.  The most recent patch on the 6th did make some improvements though.

I really want this game to succeed as I am a scifi, not fantasy fan, and I am worn out on AO, SWG, PS, EVE, etc.

Feels like it only just went into beta... releasing it too early imo.

I like the game its self actually, but there are ALOT of blaring bugs in beta and non-existent content past mid level .. releasing it this early is a REALLY BAD IDEA. This game needs at least another three months in beta. Sadly the are gonna kill this title before it can even get its legs.

Not to sound like a fanboy or anything, but you proles have no idea.

The game has a lot of support, the last patch was great and there's still a month and a half to fix some major issues.

You realise that on release WoW had no endgame right? there was UBRS, and it was broken.

These things take time, and unfortunately no publisher is going to push a game back and spend even more money without turning a profit just so the game will be larger on release, it's inconceivable to think you can infinitely push a game back until you've reached "when it's done" status, people just lose interest given time so sales die anyway.

Funny, I was once looking forward to this game.  I have great resect for Richard Garriott.  I thought his vision would produce a very innovative game.  My beta experience did not confirm that.  Seems like the developers got confused with what Garriortt designed.  Where are all the innovations they promised?  Just another same ole, same ole MMO.

    Ho hum.

BTW the game still has far too many bugs, even with the latest patch.  As we learned from Vanguard, that is not the way to release a game to the MMO audience today, they will not put up with such problems like they did before.   Blizzard has spoiled too many of them.

I have not played beta but from the posts I have seen it is clear that the majority of beta players are not happy with the game.

It sure sounds like another Auto Assault debacle.   One thing is for sure, I will not be purchasing this game at release.

I bought AA on release and did not stay with it past 2 months.   Didn't matter what the company did after that time because there was no redeeming themselves for the crap they released at the start.   Sure looks like TR may be the next AA

The empty can rattles the most, that is to say that people who don't like it will go out of their way to complain, wheras people who do like it are playing it.

The game has some pretty big flaws, but I'm not too worried.

"The empty can rattles the most"  Erm what are you talking about?

The is game is DoA.  It has no PVP.  Nuff said.  No PVP = Dead.  I don't get that.. you have a came with guns and a miltary theme, but uh no PVP.

    @kittenbot:

we have a lot more time to hear from those who do like it now, considering that beta play has been alloted into "playsessions" with 9 hours a day for two weekdays, and 57-hour weekends, citing server problems.  if the servers are not allowing 24/7 playtime during beta-testing, you can only wonder how they will handle 24/7 during retail, unless they decide to charge $15/month to play 75 hour weeks (which would ensure the death of this game in no time flat).

    also, @LordZon:

pvp is not necessarily the determining factor for an MMO.  yes, several recent MMOs capitalize on pvp, but i remember when MMOs by and large didn't offer pvp, and some of those older MMOs only later added areas where pvp is possible.  believe what you might, but pvp isn't for everyone, and there is a very large crowd that does not enjoy pvp at all.  Tabula Rasa, if its audience shows to be of the pvp flavor, can easily add such a thing later, because at the pace they've set, they had better be adding a lot more than just that and soon.
