I decided to try WoW, found a free trial offer disk in one of the Blizzard game packs. After doing 495mb download, I go to log on and it wants to do another 492mb download! What kind of crap is this? I go to the main site and look for the manual download section, you know like the GOOD companies have? They dont have one, just a link to several other sites that want you to sign up with them to download....
I can see why blizzard might be in trouble, they offer a free 14 day trial disk, then ignore it and want you to do not one but two massive downloads to play.
Do I have to 'buy' the game off the self to try it out for 14 days??? And do I have to download all the patches if I only want a 14 day trial to see if I like the game?
Give me a break! I have no problems buying the game IF I like it, but dont want to waste money on yet another game that does not suit my playstyle!

the fundamental flaw with trials...the massive downloads. be thankful WoW offers the game on a disk. some trials are 4gig+
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I don't get it. And Blizzard in trouble? bwahahahaha
How is downloading a patch preventing you from trying it out? Is this your first MMO? Because just about every MMO I've ever tried required an additional download once installed and ran for the first time. Who knows how old the trial disk is you used to install WoW. Your not making any sense. Your complaint is a joke, right?
Edit: Are you on Dial-Up?
Those Downloads are amongst the common gamer known as patches, their purpose are either:
1. remove somthing from the game
2. Repair something that is unbalanced or broken
3. Add new content to the game
Edit:typos
How are you going to know if you like the game, if you don't download it with ALL the patches? I get the feeling you've never played a MMO before. Good luck!
I forgot to mention, it went from 14 days to 10 days,
Yes I have dial up...the major hassle for living in the country.
Yes IF i choose to play this game, it will be my fifth on line game to play. EQ, Linage, Eve, EQ II All for at least a year.
No this is not a joke but more of a rant...2.5 days of downloading useing THEIR autopatcher, just to have to do it again.
Yes I know this is a patch, yes I know the game has been out for three years, and yes I knew there was going to be a big download. But why two?
You can't get the newer game updates without the newest patcher.

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.
* Your best bet would be to use a fileserver site, such as Fileplanet to download the full 450mb patch in one shot. The trial is not 'special' version of WoW, it is just a special account. You are playing in the full, real game, but with account restrictions.
* Alternatively, if you have a friend with WoW, they may have all the patches on their system. If they know where they are, they can simply put them on CD/DVD ROM, and then you can copy and install after the WoW CD is installed. (but the fileserver method is better, if you have a fileserver account somewhere)
* If you really want to feel some pain, try V:SoH. 20 GIG download! Ouch.
* For your time, you will find WoW to be the best MMORPG you have ever played using DialUp (Except for maybe EQ1, for the day). The performance is excellent on DialUp.
I wish you luck and hope you get into the game. You will find it quite worth your time; it is very fun and does work well with DialUp.
Good Hunting
uhm.... wow dude, if ur mad at less then 500mb wait for the 4gb real download along with the 2gb of patches and the 3gb expansion with its 2 gb of patches and the 2gb 2nd expansion coming out, ur a newb, quit wow, they do have a download your just too "slow" to find it.... gg
Actually your time doesn't start until you actually log into the game so regardless of whether it takes 10 minutes or 2 years to download, you'll STILL have 14 free days to play....well if it's still around in 2 years that is, but I think that's a safe bet.
You can't get the newer game updates without the newest patcher.
My guess would be that the first Patch took him up the release of the burning Crusade, WoW version 2.0 and then the second patch was to bring him up to the current patch, whatever it currently is. That's done because they don't want to have a bunch of different patches to take you from whatever version you are up to the current version. So they have one "base" version if you will where they get everyone up to that version who's below that version and then they only need to have patches to get you from that base version up to the current version plus any that happened in between. I'm only guessing that the "base" is version 2.0, but that would tend to make sense. That's fairly common in all patch systems, not just WoW or MMO's in general.
I have 7.5 Mb/s Internet and it said it was going to take hours and hours because they were giving it to me for 90 KB/s.
grr
/fail
It's over 3 gig of download by the way.
How have you tried any major game on the market? They all require a very hefty download.
Vanguard was 40gigs, stop whining.
LOL
i used to live in SC ( simpsonville rural) 28.8k dial up or sattelite. needless to say i played on dial up and patched on sat.
If your in the country in sc you dont get broadband thats just the way it is.
and yea patches suck, but any MMO will make you patch even when i got wow during release i had to patch.
It is one of the unfortunate downsides of MMO gaming, the fact that they do require regular patches and if someone gets hold of an older version of the game (i personally have the first release edition) it is gonna take a while to patch. May i suggest that you should stay well clear of Anarchy Online and City of Heroes/Villians if you find this a problem as those will have you pulling your hair out if you don't have broadband.
On the plus side world of warcraft patches do tend to be mirrored on a lot of servers and some of those mirrors do offer a burn to CD service. So if you decided to stay wit hthe game that is another possible option for you. OK, it does put you a day or two behind everyone else, but it would save your internet connection being clogged up for a couple of days.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
First patch for FF XI 3 days and 20 hours .. dial up .. Ok fastforward 2006 my roommate has T1 , I get my beta invite to Vanguard , first download 9.3 gig + a patches in the neighbor of 1 gig... download speed? 72 kbs on T1 , fast forward to 2007 June or July , go to update Eq2 download takes 4 and half days maybe longer , on dsl ... they put a massive update to everything and fae , the download was so large it filled my second harddrive to 19 gig.
FF XI today is 7 gig x 4 + POL which I dont remember how much that is. I sent my baby cousin a copy of DAOC (it was 9.99 for everything) she has dial up , took her almost 2 weeks to download the updates.
Most dont have fast servers anymore cause somany download and stuff. I think Blizzard is one of the only ones to use a peer to peer system.
Actually, WoW has their own patch servers. In addition to using bittorrent network for P2P download, Blizzard downloader automatically connects to those servers with http connection and downloads part of the download from those. At least for me (I'm living in Europe and using WoW EU), that works well and I get good download speeds even on patch days.
Well, to solve that problem I had, I went out and bought a lottery scratch off, won $50 and spent $19.95 for the game. 52mb later its up and running. Seems Blizzard does do somthing nobody else does....they keep the retail boxes updated.
Fountain Inn here and I can get as fast as 54kbps at the good times...
Wait, you only paid $20 for the retail? That's a steal. I thought it was still selling for around $30 or $40. And now you get a whole month for free rather than 14 days, so not bad at all.
Ok, you've had the game a week now. So what do you think? Was it worth the $20?
