So I've been playing MMO's for roughly 2-3 years now. I stopped playing LOTRO recently due to the fact... well... I just think its boring. I've played LOTRO, FFXI, Everquest (one), and WoW.

But lately I have been playing the free trial for this game and have been loving it.

So I just have a question before I go and buy it.

The question regards expansion packs. I see that there is three already out correct? With a fourth on the way. So does the original game come with any of the expansions? Or am I going to have to go out and hunt for each expansion?

If that will end up being the case around how much money will the game and all the expansions cost me?

Thanks!

It's never too late to start a good game. Even though I started playing EQ2 when it first came out, I left shortly after due to headaches caused by gameplay issues. I switched over to WoW which is about as headache free as you can get. I then cam back a year later and have been enjoying it ever since. Rerolling a few times in the process. Each time on a new server starting fresh and meeting new people. Not once did I feel left out or like I was behind and missing out on content. Join a guild with a good low level population and you'll be one happy puppy.

the box has all expansion packs, so does the direct2drive pack. Oddly enough, the sony store does not have this pack and buying the game with the 3 expansion packs would be $120 (as opposed to $40 at direct2drive).

I also left LOTRO due to the boredom, and the performance was less than adequate for my high end system...

I started the demo of EQ2 2 weeks ago...and 1 week ago, bought the game...and have clocked as much time on this game in the two weeks as I did in a whole month in LOTRO..and this from a casual family man, who has a kid and wife who need attention also...

In so many words...I don't want to stop...it is excellent

I have played GW, WoW, LOTRO, even Tabula Rasa closed beta, and so many Korean MMO's..and, and...ARGH!...your talking to a jaded player here...and EQ2 was great fun to me...

Try the trial of the isle of FAE demo's and see how you feel (you can play both at the same time under one login)...so, you can get a feel of crafting, and playing the various races and classes..

This is also the first game that I enjoy playing my Alts...I usually always ended up concentrating on one character in the other games...here more than one is a joy, and a necessity, as crafting actually makes good stuff you want, so having multi's allows you to have all crafts as well...cool!

Anyways...good luck no matter what you choose to do

    Cheers!

Ive just started playing a few weeks ago and am loving it. However I could not find the bundle with game/3 exp paks in stores. I had to buy it off ebay. Cost me about $45 total and only took about 3 days to get here. Also the bundle is called "Echoes of Faydwer". The only game I could find in retail was EQ2 (no exp packs) and EQ2 bundled with Kingdom of Skies. I didnt know any better and bought KoS thinking that was the one with all 3 packs =P. You mentioned you've played the trial and loved it so you have nothing to lose. Enjoy!!!

Echoes of Faydwer is best pack for now.  Buy the retail box or the digital download from Direct2Drive for all in one.

On November 13th, 2007 SOE will release Rise of Kunark which will include the NEW Rise of Kunark expansion and ALL previous expansions and rewards.  This will be the case for each new expansion released yearly.

I was also considering playing EQ2, just one question.  How is the grind between levels?

Good question...so far...getting to 20 was no issue. No constantly needing to kill to level...it was mostly quest based. They have a really cool option that if your out levelling your quests (which happened to one of my characters) you can even turn off combat xp, and ONLY get quest xp...kinda cool..

Check the trial out and enjoy

I would adivce not starting EQ2, wait for a new typ of game, like Age of connan or Warhammer, EQ2 is just a very old game to start now.

    Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

You could wait...but for now...it is the best available on the market...it is stable, good community, lots of content..

Just depends...you want something now or 6 months from now? What type of game do you want? PvE or PvP? PvE is where it is at for EQ2, for PvP go with Guild Wars or WoW

    Cheers!

And old games that have been out for a while and had all the bugs worked out are usually the best ones.  There are FEW exceptions to that.

    Agreed..

Does the name...WoW mean anything? how about Guild Wars (which ran great from Day 1)...

A game that is never mentioned very much in these circles also is Lineage 2...who now have HDR in game, excellent visuals...and this game runs excellent as well...too bad it is not as fun as some of the others listed for PvE...ok...NO PvE...lol..

But, like fine wine, MMO's age well...and with another expansion coming, a free online TCG to goof off with...EQ2 just keeps getting better

    Like CHEESE man!...

That is actually one reason that I want to play EQ2 because its well established.   I started with UO played for 5 years, really liked the community.  Also RP is a big issue for me and UO was a very good community for that.  But UO has been a dead game for awhile now. After that I played Anarchy Online, very good game, just didn't like the theme. Then when WOW came out (started less than a month after release) very pretty game with a ton of features.  I waited a year and a half for the community to develop... never did really so I quit.  Since I've played every free game it seems..... there is a reason they are free.

So does anyone think that EQ2 is not the game for me?  My biggest concerns are having good RP and Community.

well i am also thinking of starting with eq2 but in the past everytime i tried to start the game i had problems with grouping :/ it was really hard tbh @ low levels.

i am not sure what server i was on though. i played as a berserker and i think it was a needed class cause of the tanking abilities but still wasn't able to find a group easy which kinda put me down to continue to play.

i do know that the server was the highest in the population list.

i think something like nejane or something else with an "N".

i also remember that when i played on the "evil" side there were only groups for the good side dungeon which kinda sucked as wel :)

If your looking for an open **pve** game with tons of things to do, hundreds/thousands? of areas to explore and have a great time in some of the most fun pve youve ever played....EQ2 would be a great choice!

    however,

if your looking for pvp, there is not a worse place you could spend your time.

  • EmotionsEmotions Member UncommonPosts: 333

well tbh i never liked pvp in most mmorpgs besides daoc

wow has no decent use of pvp. even the rewards aren't great cause in 2 months there changed anyway.

and in daoc there was a decent reason ... you could capture a castle and that castle would be of your guild ... thats awesome. you can actually say hey that building is mine cause i kicked some guild out of it.

so yea i am more for a pve kind of game cause i know the pvp sux in eq 2 :) well in most games it sux. haven't played them all.

i just don't wanna buy the game + 3 expansions for 40 bucks just to see the same thing as before ...

  • wildgamerwildgamer Member Posts: 49

    Emotions,

In all reality EQ2 pve is hard to be beat. If you think, or someone has told you its "simplistic" like WoW they are greatly mistaken. EQ2 pve is some of the most fun and interesting pve ive ever played. i really enjoy it. however im a pvp fan that likes to pvp too. i dont agree with alot of things SoE does or have done in the past...but the fun and quality of EQ2 pve cannot be denied. Its well worth the money if your having second thoughts.

However, i would wait a little untill RoK is released and just get the whole package for one price.

  • EmotionsEmotions Member UncommonPosts: 333

thats like 2 months away :) can't wait that long and i am really bored of wow

and i agree wow is pretty simplistic and i don't know how the pve is in eq2 @ end game ... only played the low levels

i just need very sure that there are some low level players in the game that i can group with :) and what times they are around and such (i am from europe )

  • wildgamerwildgamer Member Posts: 49

i am 100% confident if you have the money to spare and buy the eq2 game with the intent on going to a pve server, you will feel your money was very very well spent.

one tip; if you buy the Echoes of Faydwer retail box out of a store, it will include everything you need (previous expansions etc) ive heard conflicting reports about the digital download...so be wary if you choose that option.

sure the game has quests of go here, kill 10 of these and come back. but the game also has some very interesting quests. however, thats not the juice of it. there are things you can do in this game that will stun you. for example...you can do things in pve with an enchanter (providing skill) that other classes would stand there in awe staring at you.

Want to enter that dungeon? damn...cant find a group? with a little bit of strategy and gear there are quite a few classes that could go in alone and come out succesfull...even if your target was the big bad mob at the very end....

there are a TON of classes to choose from..i mean a TON. when/if you subscribe...you will be lost at which class to choose. a pretty large update went live today infact that cleared up so many complaints of the veteran endgame players. ill give you a breif description of a change that went live today...

In eq2...after ya get high level....your going to loot a fabled chest in this dungeon, relic pants in this raid, legendary sword in that dungeon etc etc...and at the end...you look like a mis-matched clown.

today they added an appearance tab....you can still equip your gear that has the best stats, but you also have another tab where you can equip other armor/clothing you have purchased, crafted or earned that YOU like the looks of. pretty nifty change imho. Once again, this is possibly the best game on the market for pve, but the absolute worst, imho, for pvp. whichever you choose, good luck!

oh and almost forgot....antonia bayle is the most populated pve server, however, it is designated the officail RP server. it has the largest population of ALL servers and you will also find one of the nicest communites you have ever seen. (thats where the rumors come from about the superb population)

there are other servers that have medium/healthy populations, but for you, i would choose AB because no matter what level...how new or old...there are always helpful people playing and grouping and questing and recruiting for guilds and RP is usually purely optional. they arnt extreme RP'ers that sit in houses and RP for days.....they go out, have fun...maybe a little RP while your regening HP. great server to start on...but....there are others with medium population that are probably nice and mature also.

  • EmotionsEmotions Member UncommonPosts: 333

thx thats alot of nice info :)

i was thinking of doing the direct2drive purchase. 40 bucks for the game + all expansions.

and ill pbb come to that server if i start again :) but first need to donwload like 7 gigs ...

Wrong... EQ2 is a VERY solid game and it shines....  Old is actually a good thing in that case.
