Yesterday the server whent down while i was in the middle of a long mission. Came back and all the mobs were reset. Not happy but shit happens. I understand that after the python upgrade there are alot of kinks to work out.
You gotta love that count down. I feel like I'm playing a slot machine, whoot! At least I got to log in and warp to a stargate earlier today. That's productive.

It's EVE. Seriously, if you're in a hurry you probably won't last, and if the server is down your ship should be cozy in the warp waiting for you once they get it all together again. But as much as CCP do rather routinely break things, they do fix them too, and they add content without making you pay for expansions: have to like that bit.
If you want to try something really "curious" you can always give Vanguard a go, it's great except for (insert serious game-breaking issue here). Repeatedly falling through the world in the newbie High Elf area is really annoying! That was yesterday, today I logged into Leth Nurae, turned left, and crashed. So yup, EVE is positively shiny compared to certain other games out there right now!
Sorry, I dont miss server problem days, rather enjoy not have to worry if I get kicked or lag out while playing a online game.
hehehehehe
Oh buy the way, CCP ranks withen the top 100 for 'Biggest' most powerful, largest computer systems in the world. But they still have the blokes takeing care of it....thats the problem right there.
the issues actually started one day before the patch....so not a patch problem, get your facts straight at least before complaining...
Problems do happen sometimes and eve's server is more complex than anything else, the problems are just more noticable because its one server, not several hundreds.
we've always had hiccups around the update time. It's part of the experience as much as moaning about downtime when it happens. As for recent outages in service .. hehe those who have been around eve since beta know too well how this does not even come close to the outages we had early in even history. But for what it's worth eve has had rather execellent uptime thruout its history and 1 hour dt window every day doesn't bother me at all . I'm usually at work at that time and at weekends it gives me time to shave and pee like a human. pun intended lol
People who can only complain about such issues clearly have no clue about technology and engineering. Can't you even THINK about how complex software / hardware can be ?? If you think it's all that easy and straightforward, then i suggest you start coding your own MMORPG right away and next year you'll be rich!
They had some pretty serious DB issues with the database server. Unfortunately it caused some pretty nasty instability through the weekend. Seems they finally nailed it and got it fixed though, hasn't crashed since the last patchnote that states the DB issues were fixed.
I'm the first person to agree that CCP has patch issues now and then but it's not "every" patch as some here have said. I'd say about 50% of the patches they have released go through without a hitch. The ones they're doing now in prep for Revelations 3 are making some pretty significant changes to the code base though so stuff is bound to break.
Not giving them a pass on it.. It WAS annoying. But they did acknowledge their problem and did work very dilligently to fix it. I can recall other MMO's where issues like this would drag on for weeks before being fixed. Remember: EVE handles over 30,000 players on the database at a time. No other game has to handle that load. Takes a bit more to figure out what's wrong when it's only triggered at a certain usage threshold.

Sorry I think people are just to fast to complain, WoW has more downtime in a given week than EvE has all year.
It does? could of fooled me....NO down time in two weeks besides the weekly patch.
WoW has more DT than EVE because they have more servers 500 servers (just a guess) vs 1

As said above, there's a huge difference. EVE runs one big server, WoW runs many smaller ones. WoW's servers -do- frequently have troubles, just maybe not the one you play on. When one WoW server goes down, the players of the many others don't notice because their server was fine. When EVE's single server goes down, it affects the players because it's only one server.
When a WoW server can handle 20k to 30k people on at one time and manage to keep it running for two weeks straight with -no hiccups-, then by all means feel free to comment on EVE's troubles.
Some of WoW's older servers have frequent trouble. I remember only a year or so into the game and a good portion of their original servers were extremely unstable, filled with lag, and crashing frequently.

You might want to look up your information....
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW... It all sucked.
Such as? I may no longer play the game, but I know people that do and -do- have some issues. Their original hardware bombed after barely a year. I remember playing through 10 second lag, only to be followed by a crash about 15 minutes after it started. Granted, they replaced the hardware -eventually-, but the fact still stands. Point being that all hardware, both new and old has issues. Not even going to get deep into the fact that Blizzard makes millions upon millions more dollars a month than CCP does. That should instantly mean more stability on their part, because they easily have the funds to make their hardware better.
There are -still- server issues in WoW. Maybe not frequently on one server, but spread across the board of the hundred or so servers that they have.
Let's take for example one server in WoW. That server caps at about 3500 if I recall correctly. That server may have issues once a month for whatever reason, and that's obviously just a ballpark. Some servers may be fine for a couple months or until a patch is released. That patch may cause problems on the server and increase its downtime temporarily.
Spread the random issues across the hundred plus servers that they have, and you get quite a bit of -combined- downtime. It would be logical as well to assume that keeping one smaller server functional is easier than keeping one large server functional.
Now let's take EVE's single server into account. It goes for decent periods of time without crashing, but it has a lot of stress due to the sheer amount of people using it at once, sometimes confined in one small space which adds even more stress on certain nodes. So at the moment it is having some very frequent issues which are quite frustrating for its players.
BUT - The problem at hand that everyone is focused on wasn't even due to stress. It was due to a glitch from a recent patch that they tracked down in which certain stations in the game were able to do things that they shouldn't have been.
The point of all of this, is that neither game necessarily has -more- downtime than the other. They both have their own issues, and a single large server can not be compared properly with a smaller server because there are different issues with each. (Yes, I know I compared them, but that was to point out the differences)
You guys are trying to compare 2 different server technologies. Its not easy. Both games have their technologies which differ greatly and so does what the players experience when there are issues. The one main draw back of the Eve servers is that since they dont use sharding, if there is a major issue then everyone knows about it and suffers, like recent server crashes. However, in WoW, if there is a problem on one of their server clusters only a few thousand at best crash while the majority of players never experience any problems.
Also, Eve's server architecture is much more complicated and complex then WoWs'. WoW uses a tested and long proven method of sharding and instancing, where as, Eve is moving down a path that isn't used much for gaming. Here is an article that talks about the Eve online server technology and references WoW in there some too: http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/19378/?a=f
Anyways, what im getting at is Eve and WoW's server setups are different and typically in the IT world the more complex it is, the more problems you will face. This is Eve's issue right now and IMO they are doing a decent job at keeping up.
Oh and after any patch there are typically bugs that pop up and need to be worked out. Any time code is changed you will more then likely have issues. This happens in anything be it Eve, WoW or your anti virus program.
Comments
Not even their official forums are working. Holy hell...
Their server hardware and software is considerably more complex than any other MMO on the market. Sometime shit happens.
Sometimes? Played this game long? Every patch has issues. Installing new code always seems to break their hardware....
Ive had no problems.

Read the damn server message, they had hardware die and had to take the cluster down to swap it out. Server is up now.
Read the damn time stamp on my post. Server has gone down twice today. kthxbai.

pssst server crashed again... don't tell anyone... coming back up in seven minutes... !

EVE and SWG have to be the worst games ever for trying to play after a patch. But worth the wait.
