what is the most fun (non MMORPG) game to play online with friends?

I think I'm done with MMO's for many reasons....

 

What are the best games to play to continue having fun with my online friends?  I want something that doesnt require a commitment.... I'm tired of having to play games when I dont want to just so I dont fall behind, and many of my friends cant make commitments to games any more.

 

Currently I play Battlefield 2 with some of them... its fun for about an hour or so a couple times a week.  What else is out there?  Something group oriented preferred, I have CS etc. and that doesnt fit the bill.  Also not looking for RTS games... I know that really narrows it down!

    Its not out yet, but keep an eye out for Gears of War for the PC. I played it on the Xbox360 version, and its a fun team based game when played online (It won Gamespot award for best multiplayer)

    I would recommend Counter Strike for team-based combat but since you don't want an FPS, I'll recommend Starcraft. It's cheap and entertaining.

    Well The PC has lots of good RTS games which i find fun. The best one being Supreme Commander of course.

    have you tried "there?" it pretty much all about fun. it takes place in modern day on a tropical island with your own personal avatar. you get around by driving buggies, hoverboards, hoverbikes, or teleporting. basic membership is free and premium is a one time fee of $9.95.  the system requirments aren't very high and it works with vista! check it out! http://www.there.com

    NWN is an RPG, allthough not massive but a fair bit of people playing on different servers, try that out.

    Personally I like coop mode in shooters.

    quake 2 and system shock 2 being among the favourites.

    The svencoop mod for halflife is awesome and has massive amount of maps to play. ( Among them being one of my own "testrun", my first and only svencoop map ).

    Serious Sam is hilarious, and well done.

    There are many, but the downside is that it is content consumed once you have played them a couple of times, in contrary to MMO's.
