I need help installing linux ubuntu on my laptop!!!

i'm trying to create a dual boot system for vista and linux ubuntu, but the last time i tried that on my own, my computer became unbootable into linux or vista and i had to do a system restore to restore it back to it's factory image! Please, please, please help!!! also, when i was trying to install ubuntu, it didn't load into the destop like most of the tutorials said it would but instead looked something like the safe mode version of windows with windows 98 themed windows. i cant find a tutorial for this install version!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!
