Well:
How to begin? DnL is, (without doubt), the largest MMORPG that has ever been produced. The distances are well, unbelievable. You could fit 20 x DAoC's, or 4-5 WoW's into Ganareth. (and only 5 out of 13 areas are currently available--and likely that is all that will ever be available.)
DnL started as Settlers of Ganareth, (SoG; a scaled down version of DnL),
Like many other smaller game companies, it was long on vision, and short on resources. It made grandiose promises of 3rd generation systems before any other MMORPG at the time, (or since).
Unfortunately, they were not able to produce all that had been promised. Compounding the problem was the fact that Farlan tried to bluff their way through it.
Promises were made, and never fulfilled. Accounts were purchased, and the *perks* promised never materialized. The game was released full of bugs and glitches. The company, (either through inexperience, language translation problems, [they operate off Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean], or pure dishonesty), stonewalled.
It had probably the *worst* release in MMO history.
To compound matters, there was (is) a legal proprietary issue between Farlan and one of NPCube's former designers over the basic graphic engine of the game.
Presently it is completely free to play, and will likely remain so until the legal issues are resolved, the game gets *fixed*, or they throw in the towel and shut down.
It is presently on life-support, with little or no help and support for the players other than what they can provide for themselves.
The game is not finished. There are major problems with downloading, patching, and log-in. About 25%, (roughly), of new players have major issues in these areas. Other players have provided advice and quick fixes. These work in about half of the cases. The other half can never get it to work properly, and give up.
The player community is, (generally), very supportive and willing to help; both in-game and on the forums.
There is a sense of shared adversity that makes the community a little more tolerant and helpful than other games I have played. As the population creeps up, (thanks to free-to-play), you do see some issues break out, but nothing like other games.
DnL is not for the impatient. DnL is not for anyone looking for 'front-line' MMO. It is a diamond in the rough, with the players having to fill the role of diamond cutters.
It's free, give it a try; but don't expect it to be smooth sailing all the way. If you can get through the 'white-water', you may like it; but many decide it's not worth the effort.
I play it. I like it; but my taste is not necessarily your taste.
Good Luck!
Wellll.....as even agh50(finnigan at DNL boards) gave you the answer............ false hype, suspect actions, etc etc on the part of the devs, including LOTR as a backdrop to their own game is well....par for the course with them. The rest of the game is pretty much the same concept....lie, mislead, and generally condone sleazy actions. You would think they would think long and hard about anything they do, in the slightest way, and its effect of the general consensus of their own company..but alas, 'tis not the way with Farlan.

Wow! I missed alot obviously! I thought this game wouldv'e bit the dust long ago! What's keeping this POS alive???
Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.
pfft! Arrogance, greed (farlans perceived final outcome), inexperience, bad management and a complete loss of common sense.
If you actually downloaded this game believing it would be good, AND posted here to tell us about it, then you deserve everything you have coming to you.
Strange... But those r normally the things that kill a project. I was thinking more along the lines of a "pact with the devil" or some such.

Dark and Light the largest barren land simulator you ever seen.
