Sorry, I forgot you were supposed to instinctively know how to play it.

If you went through with getting the trial, installing, downloading updates, and playing, without even searching for a noobie guide, you might as well just install the game now. You won't make it past level 5. FFXI is one of the hardest MMOs to start, due to having no tutorial. Probably the only harder would be EVE, because it's more complex.

    Go back to WoW.

Ok, first of all read the manual that came with the game. It explains the basic commands you will use plus some that can be useful. Secondly your starting city has a lot of NPC's that explain  some of the concepts of the game, think of it like any other single player FF you have played and you would do ok.

Lastly visit pages like http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/ and http://ffxi.somepage.com/ to get some guides about some of the aspects of the game.

FF is one of those games that are a bit tough to start but they get better as you figure it out how it works.

FFXI is completely diffrent to your standard mmo, so yes, you kind of started off on a bad step.

Definently read the manual..maybe even buy the FFXI strategy guide, it helped, and continues to help me alot.

It will take time getting use to, and the first 10 levels will seem lacking, but more options open up as you progress, so don't feel discouraged feeling totally new to everything. Read alot of guides..google them if you have to, theirs alot to learn on the way of things in this game.

FFXI, imo, is a great game.  it's old school rpg.  if you are a hardcore ffxi fan, i say stick with it.

I think it's easier to use with a controller.  If you have one plug it into your PC and try using that.  I found the keyboard and mouse very difficult to use in this game due to it being designed for the playstation2 controller.

The game has the archaic group only style of play.  It requires large quantities of time to play.  You can't really solo past ten with the starting classes.  Well I've heard Black Mages have soloed up pretty high, but it's got to be painful considering the XP is horrible without the group chain bonus.

There are lots of controllers for the PC you can buy.  If you want to use a PS2 controller then you have to buy a special adapter.

be aware, if you do decide to buy and subscribe to this game that when you stop subscribing you have to buy the discs again. Its a really silly system in my opinion.

That rule has been removed long ago.

    1)  That was done away with long ago.

    2) It wasn't as bad as you stated. If you cancelled your ACCOUNT, for over 3 months they would wipe it from the system, if you just cancel'd content IDs your characters/account would be there indefinately. There was actually no reason to cancel your account, as soon as you cancelled all your content IDs, you got charged nothing to keep the account open.

    3) Do research before you make stupid broad generalizations about things you don't actually know about.

Are you sure? I've heard recently its still the case.
    Here we go:

"You can become a member again after unsubscribing from PlayOnline. If you return to PlayOnline within three months of unsubscribing, you can restart the same service without having to complete the regular registration process. In this case, use the "For PlayOnline Members Only" when launching PlayOnline after a reinstall to log back in using your existing PlayOnline ID and PlayOnline Password. If you return to PlayOnline three months after unsubscribing, you must register a new PlayOnline account. This means you must purchase a new copy of the software to obtain a new set of registration codes."

You're right I don't actually know about it myself but heard it from FFXI players themselves. Obviously this is wrong.

Yep, controls were big problem  when I logged in for the first time. I had to use the manual, which is thing I don't usually do.

That's what a console port brings.

The UI in FFXI is retarded and it has no place for a mouse.  Sure, stuff can be done with the mouse, but the buttons definitely aren't designed to be clicked easily.  This is 2007 and in this game you still have to pull up a menu and tell the game to sort your inventory every so often to make items stack and fit so loot doesn't get lost.

Ahh the joy of day 1 in sandy :O I pretty much had the same problems as the OP when I first started playing haha. I didnt get out of town for like the first hour and as soon as I did I died to some orcs :P, then another hour wasted finding my way again hehe. Its truly a great game if u decide to play it though.

Although GameFAQs isn't that great for MMO's as everything tends to be hopelessly out of date, they have some newbie guides at

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/555735.html

    that might help you.

Just a small warning, FFXI is very "hardcore".  Although it is possible to solo and some things can be done by yourself, in general you have to do everything in a party and are a helpless little kitten just by yourself.  Everything is designed to suck up amazing amounts of time, and little comes easy.

If this is the sort of thing you are likely to enjoy, go for it, but you've been warned...

I purchase FFXI on launch day years ago, and have cancelled and re-subscribed several times. As long as you don't delete your account with Playonline, you don't have to re-buy anything, you can simply reactivate the account.

FFXI is not a good game to just wander into. After the first few levels it becomes almost impossible to solo, and the scaling XP requirements make it progressively more difficult and time consuming to level.

However, that isn't the worst of it....

Many people think people able to switch classes on one character is a nice perk, to not have to make multiple characters. However, the underlying concept on this is that your character is defined by their active primary and secondary classes. In essence, even if your primary class is maxed out, you're not even remotely as powerful as you should be, due to the necessity of levelling your secondary class.

To do this, you switch to the secondary class (which sets your active level to level 1 when you first get it) -- AND DO EVERYTHING ALL OVER AGAIN. Yes, you must level up from level 1 all ver again, buy equipment, etc. Your secondary class is a max of one-half the level of your primary class, so at level 4 you will finally enjoy having level 2 in your secondary class.

Unless you have a group of friends, an active guild, or are just plain sadistic, I don't recommend jumping into te game lightly.
