Next Generation ?

judgebeojudgebeo Member Posts: 419

This game is announched as "next generation" game:

What do you mean by next generation?

By ?Next Generation? we mean that while Darkfall was inspired by the pioneers of online role-playing games, such as Ultima Online, Everquest and Asheron?s Call, it has advanced features and technology never before seen in online games. We are confident that Darkfall will help to advance the genre further.

so "technology never before seen, andadvanced features":

First of all: Where is the "technology never before seen"? in graphics, I dont see how good graphics are, this is not the most important thing of a mmorpg game for me, but, just want to know where this "technology" is.

What kind of advanced features does Darkfall have?

Darkfall has most of the features one would associate with fantasy based MMORPGs, but also contains elements found in real-time strategy and action games. In Darkfall it?s the players and their actions that shape the world. We provide you with the platform and the tools to engage in grand activities such as kingdom building, politics, strategy, diplomacy, combat, warfare, conquest, and racial wars. We also offer you the freedom and the option to not get involved in any of that if you don?t want to, and to follow a path of your own.

Do you have skill caps?

Yes, skills start at one and cap at 100.

I think the skill system could be great, but, also, could be a crap, if you they put a cap on it, will be the same that leveling, if they dont put it, players will get overpowered characters with skills in sword, magic, armor etc.. what I mean? is that everyone will be the same, will have the same "build", cause you can have it all. So "skill cap" = "levels"?

Racial wars?

Yes. Darkfall has six different main character races: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Mahirim, Orks and Alfar. Each race has different political standings with the other races. The Elves are at peace with Dwarves and Humans, but are wary of Mahirim, and are at war with the Orks. Everyone hates the Alfar, and the Alfar hate everyone. In effect this means that Elven players may travel to Dwarven and Human cities without having any problems with the city guards, and may buy and sell in stores. If an Elven player traveled to an Orkish city, he would be killed on sight, both by city guards and other players. In Alfar cities, any other race is attacked.

Think this is nothing new... and about conquer.

Can you walk through other players in Darkfall?

No, so blocking entrances will be a viable combat tactic. It is possible to push players and monsters out of the way though, so this tactic can be countered.

famous Guild Wars Body Block.

So "WHAT are next generation games like this"? What are the features no other game will have? conquer ciies (like conan or Shadowbane) RvR (like daoc, war etc...) gvg (like Gw) fully pvp zones with npc and players (like cox)? I cant found where is the "new things", or is just a mix? will be the combat system point & click or something new like Chronicles or Aoc?

Dont give me wrong, perhaps is a very pesimist view of the game, but Im seeing lot of people excited about it and dunno why, I will join it if is a good game, like war, aoc, chronicles, etc... but, Seems that graphic engine is very old, and the features are nothing about "new" or "next gen", so perhaps you can explain me what it is.

Ask yourself what is better, good graphics or the possibility to have hundreds vs. hundreds battels?

I have played games there that was possible and even if the game was crap, those battles were more epic and fun (<-important) then any of the popular games "pvp" are.

How "next generation" can a 5 year old project be?

From what they said that having a skill in 100 isnt going to make you signifigantly better. This isnt roma victor.

Name one game that has features that are completely new and original.
Can you walk through other players in Darkfall?

No, so blocking entrances will be a viable combat tactic. It is possible to push players and monsters out of the way though, so this tactic can be countered.

From this post it shows that you know very little about the game.
http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=16052- this would be a good place to start.

To me, the idea of a good mmorpg is not that it has good graphics true gamers know that graphics comes at the bottom of the list when it comes to online gaming. It's all about the content, so mainly when i judge a game by its cover i base my decision the content it contains and the quality of the PvP and finally, of course whether or not the game has interactive guild play and player cities and possibly player economy(games that have player economies usually turn out to be more popular for example, Star wars galaxies ruled the online gamingworld  in  its prime, and there rly isn't another game out there that could contend with a game like SWG in its prime.) So in my opinion graphics DONT MAKE A NEXT GEN GAME PEOPLE!!!!

May the force be with you

i think you miss the point Judge.

DF is the next gen MMOs because it let the player be in the center, and do not  hold the hand during play.

The second thing is that it have all features from all other MMOs. Then some FFA PvP full loot to hold the world together.

Thats what makes it next gen, not graphics or conquer ability.

Setting up a system for 10.000 of gamers with 100v100 battles "ain't easy"...you are pretty much "livin' on the edge" server and applikation wise. EvE has 35k players online on the same "server" now but not as many features. It will stretch the technology.

In DF you train your skills by using them. As you ie usually cannot craft and fight at the same time you will have to make a choice what you want your character to be good at. You can throw both fireballs and use a sword but everytime you hack your sword you will not increase your fireballskill. That said, there is a limit on how good you can be (skill cap) so that there will be possible for younger toons to "catch up" to older toons if specialized enough in an area where the older toon is vulnerable. And older toon may have had time to train both to max you say ? Yes that is right, and older toon have more knowledge and can be more flexible but could be vulnerable frome icebolts or acid rain. in conclusion because of the number of skills, the amount of work it will take to train it and the skill cap, you will have dangerous flexible toons out there but no super toons.

Well, imaigine this in a 100v100 battle and it is getting pretty damned impressive. You may use the tacktics of old where the the disiplined will be victoriuos over the undisiplined. Guild Wars have nothing on DF.

Most of the games you decribe have some kind of limits/zoning. In DF you can fight everywhere. There will be consequenes (loss of faction) but no one is stopping you to try to take over the orc's city but to be realistic you better bring hundreds of your best friends :)
Dont give me wrong, perhaps is a very pesimist view of the game, but Im seeing lot of people excited about it and dunno why, I will join it if is a good game, like war, aoc, chronicles, etc...
For me it is the sandboxfeatures and the freedom that comes with it that is exiting. Try out EvE to see what I am talking about...

You must be joking ????!!!!! I was s short time in beta of DD online when it was heavily instanced with no PvP. Hell, you couldn't even leave the city. Things may have changed though.

What does that have to do with FPS style combat? In DDo you actually have to tumble around with your keys, dodge in and out of combat, block with right click with your shields or perrying or whatever. You mainly still can't leave the city (You can't leave the city either in city of X...),

Lot of you are talking, and justifying, the graphics engine in fron 100vs100 battle... but... ey! rfonline already have it and have a good graphic engine!!

About the fps and the fighting engine, you think that you can have a FPS in a 100vs100? with no lag? you sure the technology of our lines permit to do this? I think 200 people firing together and getting "no lag"... and "aiming" in real time is not possible.

For they that says: What other game got this fighting system or similar - Tabula rasa, neocron2 etc... (and neocron 2 is old enought)

as I said, Im not flaming the game, I was very interested but cant found why is really ... "special", I took a look to the oficial webpage, and still the same one year ago... dunno if people talk about vaporware or whatever, but perhaps the features and the engine was thought 2 years ago and now got old?

Sure they'll be lag but since this game was built to handle massive battles such as that one the lag wont be as bad.

From what ive heard about TR that the fighting system is nothing like what DF is supposed to be like. As for neocron2 idk. I'm not sure what you mean by putting "aiming" in quotes but you actually do have to aim. Not a dice roll that says if you hit or not.

Read the faq's and go through the dev quotes on df.warcry.com and look at some of its aspects.
