my group of friends and i decided to try the LotRO trial over this weekend and we reached level 13 in 2 days of play. so far the only problem that i have with the game is that its too *easy*. when we group together and run around and quest, it seems like most of the stuff are ridiciously easy, and nobody really has a specific role in the group.
maybe its just me since i play a burglar, but most of the time i'm just mashing buttons as soon as they refresh and CC every now and then when we need it. i guess what i'm looking for is more like the instances WoW has, where everyone has a role and its actually a challenge to run through the lowbie dungeons for the first few times.
im considering getting the game, but i can't help but feel that half the time i'm like playing titan quest or something >_< just a whole lot of button mashing.

As a burgler, you will become a major crowd controller later.
You'll also have your hands full with Conjunctions.
http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=33307 <-- check that out
You'll also be doing a little bit of DPS, although that is not our main function.
It gets more challenging around 20 and more so around 30.
Suddenly you'll be having to control and focus and lead groups through conjunctions. It's certainly not boring once you get into your 30's
The first 15 lvls are basically soloable. There are a few quests that require a small fellowship to complete but not many. At 13 you haven't even gotten into the barrow downs yet and let me tell you the great barrows is no cake walk. You will need a good group. This will be around lvl 20 when you start this instance.
It does get more defined when you get higher lvls. When you group up to do soloable quests it makes the game way to easy cause that content isn't ment to be done that way. I can tell you the roles do get more defined later on in the game at higher lvls.
Have fun in Book 5 Chapter 8. Everyone here who has done this quest knows exactly what I am talking about.

Yeah i did the same thing in the begining with a group of friends and then we started doing the books and getting up in lvls and hit a brick wall. Also crafting can make a big diference as you get into higher lvls. I did do any crafting with my main and now at 50 I am almost always broke. So take your time and it will pay off in the end.
Bah... so what if most of the mobs in there are Elites... :-p
Actually just had a brief run in there last night - very brief. Someone in my kin decided to give a quest in there (Purging the Dead) even though he's about 4 levels lower than the recommended level; he figured he wanted to give it a try anyway, even if it ended with some death.. 4 of us went in; I was the only one over the recommended level; the others were under it. We got past the first epic spider and, coming up on the second, which was a level 19 epic "queen", apparently standing there by itself. Having not been in there before outside of Book 1 Chaper 11, I went ahead and pulled. Suddenly two others come around the corner that were well hidden until I fired; both level 18 elites. So now I'm being beaten on by 3 elite spiders; we all ended up having to evacuate - though two died because they didn't make it out in time.
What got me is that the person who wanted to "give it a try, even if there's death" ended up blaming me for a "bad pull" - that somehow we could have aggro'd the queen without having to deal with the other two, waiting right next to her. He said "they could have been stunned first, so we'd only have the queen on us" - we had two LM's in the group, including him, so he figured they could have done that. Problem with that, I noted, is they're hiding out of line-of-sight, which means you have to get close enough to actually *see* them, which puts you right in aggro range of the queen before you even get to them. And.. of course, what if the stun misses, which, given the level difference and that they're epics was a good likelihood... Well you get the idea. Essentially, they shouldn't have been in there in the first place at that level. Basically he didn't know what he was talking about, and didn't want to admit it.
But anyway.. yeah, the Barrows are not a picnic - assuming you're in there at the ideal level.

To finish the Great Barrows, you need a FULL party of 22+, preferably 24+ people. Even with that, death sometimes occurs.
Being 4 levels lower and trying to go in, is just plain stupid.

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
Yeah, so I'd heard several times, and relayed that to the person who wanted to try it anyway. He was fine with it, as was everyone else. If we died, hey at least we gave it a shot, more or less. No one went in thinking they wouldn't be at risk of dying. I'm fine with that; heck I'm known for running off into areas way higher than me to explore. I was running around in Evendim at level 20 or so to see what it was like.
That's what made him coming back and, indirectly as it was, blaming my pulling for us dying, saying "we should be more careful pulling" annoying to me. A: he was making an issue over something he'd said he didn't really care about prior to going in, despite being told how rough the area is B: He was criticizing and talking as though what he was saying would have made a difference. Well, perhaps we'd have lasted a little longer before having to run and/or dying... but still.
I know I learned something from it, next time he says "well, let's give it a try, even if we do die" - I'm staying out of it.

The difficulty level ramps up considerably in the higher level quests and instances. It's funny how people who have never played the game or have only played the lower levels dismiss it as being too easy or whatever. In the early levels you can pretty much throw a fellowship of people together and get the quest done if you don't have a healer, tank, DPS... or even if you have people who don't know how to play their classes. In the higher level quests if you don't have the right mix of classes or you have people who don't know their role, you'll certainly wipe.
Also do retake weathertop. That was a blast.

Tbh I've done book 5 ch 8 and retake weathertop and didnt find anything particularly hard about either. Fornost is really tough (went in with a level 42+group and our minstrel kept getting toasted) and Thieftakers bane took numerous attempts to complete considering its only a mini instance. I would reinforce what others have said about the classes though - I found that the group make up wasnt too important till you started doing some of these instances but when you actually did them you needed certain classes to complete them. As i've got higher and higher through the levels Burglars have become more and more important to FS as conjuctions become more invaluable while questing.

And that's just the start of the game. It's also an instance. It does get much easier if you got a level 30 tank, but then again I had a level 41 Ministrel with me.
Even just the mobs in random places can get hard. If you're heading to the Trollshaws at the recommended level you'll be overwhelmed by all the vicious bears etc.
So yeah. Don't judge LotRO on the first few levels of the game, because it does significantly ramp up the difficulty.
I think LotRO has an easier learning curve than most others because it's a casual MMO.
