I think you should have designed this poll differently. I had to say no; not because EQ2 will blow it out of the water... simply because it could never live up to hype and be anywhere past middling-good. All the "No's" here will probably be seen by some idiots as constituting a "EQ2 will kick WoW's ass!" when really, I think alot of people think they're both going fall below expectations.
The fans of EQ2 and WoW are very sad. To say one game is better than another is ridiculous. Sure each has their own pros and cons but both should be good games (who knows until release and broad group of people play the game). Both target a different market and gamer. Both offer different features which appeal to different consumers. EQ2 is geared to grouping and PvE style of play. I would also suggest more geared to hard core players. The graphics in EQ2 are different then WoW and, to some, this is important. WoW gives some variety to the PvE by including FvF on regular servers. WoW appears to be more solo friendly and appears to cater more the casual gamer.
The two both have interesting features but neither will be the nirvana of MMORPG.
To each their own. Dont run down the other person's choice because you dont like it.
I personally will likely try WoW and not EQ2. WoW appears to be solo friendly, allows a break from PvE with FvF, and appears to suit a casual gamer. These are the features that are important to me. I dont think EQ2 will meet my needs.
1. you think it will be great because blizzard made it is a little strange because WoW is a totaly different game than other Blizzard titles, dont be suprised if its to different from the games u know and love.
2. You have no proof that its gonnabe the best game... u just think that cause either your a Blizzard fan or you just looked at pictures and think the game looks cool
3. The developers at SOE have experience making MMORPGs. They learned alot of new thing from past games and packed it into EQ2.
4. I hate to say it but WoW will be bringing in a lot more who havent played MMORPGs before so if it doesnt catch at the begining alot of people could leave.
5. EQ2 will most likely attract more seriouse MMORPG fans because its a sequal to one of the greatest MMORPGs of all time.
6. If people that are saying that it will be the greatest game of all time will be playing it the community will suck. The game cant be the best, nothing can... somthing better will come out after it and so on.
No. Why? No Bump Mapping. I just bought a 6800 GT and I want something thats going to push this card to the limit when I set a waterblock on it. I'm going to end up playing EQII to test it out, which isn't a bad thing. I just need more eye candy!
that has some non-scripted combat/gameplay videos.
No. Major fansites like those script their combat and gameplay. The juniorx videos are from a beta tester (pretty much a newb, although he does make these nice videos).
2. Haven't seen EQ2's combat yet. It's better, much better
It only looks better graphically. Graphics !- gameplay.
3. Pretty sure you can do all that in WoW except that lame ruler of city crap. EQ2's guilds have much more depth
Neither game is released, how can you assume that?
6. You can have houses in WoW, not sure how in-depth it will be at the moment. EQ2's houses are MUCH different than WoW's. With thousands of furnishings, you can place things ANYWHERE in the house. Also decorate using wallpaper, add rooms, ect.
The Sims had that. Is it a good game? No.
7. Most of them will have many similarities..., Nope
Erm... just about every class to ever exist falls under the class of warrior, mage, priest, rouge, and artisian. That applies to each and every MMORPG, no matter what you name the class. Besides, WoW is going to have hero classes - that branches out the original classes later on.
9. Yeah, that's cool and all, but I could care less about the faces. 'Omg, isn't XXX's face so awesome?' Don't care. You will when you walk into a room and see 7 of yourself. Character customization is HUGE in MMORPG's.
WoW has great customization when it comes to equipment. The only thing I'll miss about WoW customization is no height/weight customization.
11. I said this once, big fucking deal. Just a waste of my time listening to them talk. Your oppinion. Have fun reading text for 3 hours.
While each NPC having a voice is a nice feature, it's not always the best choice. I watched an EQ video with a monster making a speech, and I could barely understand it - the voice was doctored so much to sound in character, that it was incomprehensable.
12. Dumbest thing ever. It gives tradeskills MUCH more depth.
But not when you ruin your "uber sword of etc." made from an expensive and rare ore due to a lag spike that happened during a critical spot in the "smithing minigame."
17. Realistic graphics are nice and all, but I don't feel like spending $500 on a new video card. WoW's graphics are just fine. Your oppinion.
You couldn't buy a video card powerful enough to run EQ2 decent enough in any type of 10+ model situation.
WoW is *already* a wonderful game world without the promises. It has *already* succeeded in many, many aspects compared with what the market has offered till now (and believe me when I say that EQ2 and MEO will turn out to be extremely disappointing). WoW isn't a timid hope doomed to die or shrink. It isn't overestimated. WoW isn't about *promises*, it's about *delivering.
WoW feels already huge and it's completely a special case. I realized, by playing, that you cannot compare the scope of WoW with current mmorpgs on the market. I think there's no competition. This is the first time I felt the "immersion" in a mmorpg.
- An Insanely Long Review - Friday, April 02
Yeah, I agree that WoW is really nothing *revolutionary* to advance the genre. Nor would it be the greatest game ever. Then again, I'll still wait till its final release. Who knows?

With a solid and steady base to work on (aka, the game in its current form), I'm sure blizzard could come up with some semi-revolutionary ideas via patches or an expansion pack.
And besides, the market of ideas is pretty much saturated - I've never read about anything particularly revolutionary about any modern MMORPG. At the very least, WoW will be a decent MMORPG with a great company behind it - even for their free games, their customer support is fairly fast and reliable.
Well i voted yes simply because all mmorpgs have the potential to become great games thats what makes them so exciting to play and so anticipated before release. I know this thread has already become a WoW vs EQ2 monkey fest but let me say this EQ2 has no pvp and for me that makes all the difference pvp is very important to me and i cant stand games without it. Also the great EQ2 graphics everyone is drooling over are TOO GOOD. There is no way they will run on my machine not looking that good anyway and they wont be running that good on the majority of everyone elses machines either. Not to mention graphics mean shit compared to gameplay and if eq2 plays a lot like eq1 i will hate it. Hopefully WoW wont be an eq clone and you wont have to play 6 hours a day doing raids to have anything resembling fun in it.
One other thing be wary of these people starting poll posts that only have 3 posts in their history. Theyre just pulling strings and probably only posting so they can fanboy hype their favourite game.

You're sure? Really? All the main stuff like combat and the world building seems done. What are they going to add that really makes it significantly different? And what do you mean "At the very least", this thread is about how WoW will or will not be the best mmorpg ever.
And to say the market of ideas is saturated is to be shallow and in denial. UXO had very original ideas that were never done before. So does Tabula Rasa, and even Wish, and Dark and Light are deviating more than WoW is.
Go check out Tabula Rasa; and by check out, i don't mean read the mmorpg.com description and look at screenshots; download the e3 trailer and interview, then tell me no mmorpg's are trying to break the mold.
Oh good another bickering session between EQ mob killers and Blizzard fans that are following WoW like hungry animals. I hope one of the sides is making some headway despite the fact that both sides are too headstrong to even consider eachothers opinions or read deeply into the debate. Have fun!
Sure. Why not? But will it ever be? We will have to watch.
You have to understand that we often say: "graphic doesn't make a good game, gameplay does" True.
In MMOG, this notion is further pushed to...
"gameplay alone doesn't make a good game, the human factor does"
Now what is human factor?
It's really not simple to explain. There is a nuance in here. It's a bit of everything. You can really not generate this "human factor" mechanically by the gameplay itself. Only the player can.
Gameplay mechanic can contribute to create certain atmosphere within the game, but large portion of this "human factor" are direct product of human interaction of its own.
If I break down, it might look something like this.
10% : Graphics, Music, etc... (Highly measurable)
20% : Gameplay, etc.... (largely dependant on taste, but given a reference point that everyone agree upon, definitely measurable. The problem is there is no such thing as an absolute reference point)
70% : Everything that can spawn from human interaction. (Not measurable. It's something beyond the scope of the game itself) Such as Emotion, level of competition, hardcore/casualness, play style.
It depends on how you define "the greatest MMORPG ever of alltime". If you define it by number of sales of the game and number of people that play(or will be playing it), then "yes" WoW has that potential. Keep in mind so does EQ2 and Middle Earth Online. You can't count out Guild Wars, D-n-L, Wish and Ulitima X: Odyssey. All these titles will have a chance to try and be #1 in sales and people playing online.
If you define "the greatest MMORPG ever of alltime" by what you or I think that would be, it really is just a matter of collective opinions. Whichever group has the most number of people with like opinions, (which does translate to sales numbers and online statistics) will decide the "greatest of all time."
Practically, an mmorpg is in danger of loosing that title about every year or two when the next best mmorpg is released. Have you stopped to ponder if there might be an EQ3 or WoW 2 in the future? There are many mmorpgs in developement slated to hit the shelves next year. To decide which mmorpg is the greatest of all time, I think you can only ask that question about mmorpgs that have already been out and played for at least a couple of years. In addition, you have to be able to compare the game to other mmorpgs. As it is, the mmorpg genre is still quite young.
In my opinion, this year's number one mmorpg will be a battle between EQ2 and WoW. I believe both will be very good mmorpgs compared to what we have currently available and what we have played. Yes, WoW does have the potential.

*sigh* I actually didnt expect this to turn out into a WoW vs EQ2 fest in the first place (which I am really getting tired with). I was expecting ppl to suggest other MMORPGs out there, hmm maybe even underdogs. Wonder why you guys never mentioned about Guild Wars, eh? Other examples, CoH and Ryzom, maybe?

I couldn't agree more with your point. Player interaction is key to MMOs, and this is precisely why WOW will never turn out on top. Blizzard has designed and crafted WOW like a single-player game and not much has been done to encourage player interaction they way EQ2 or Lineage2 has done.
IMHO Everything to do with Warcraft has been overhyped from WOW to the original games. They were "very" good and stable games but "not" great.
IMHO WOW looks a bit too much like a cartoon for me but I'm VERY glad it is coming out at the same time as EQ2 so maybe all the "cool" dewds and kiddies will play WOW with the cute graphics and let the adults play EQ2
P.S. There are entire groups of idiots out there that have pledged their support and undying love for a game they have never playes (on both sides).
P.P.S. ANY game can suck - look at SWG.... the worst POS ever made so just because they poured lots of $$$ into a game and have a great license does not mean that it will be a winner.

No, WoW has no potential for being even remotely great. Its made from blizzard for christ sake
I think this statement officially makes you a very ignorant and biased person. Therefore your opinions are not taken seriously from now on. gg ~

Guild War has most potential of all.
However globally and numberwise Lineage 2 will still dwarf the rest.
You can't beat Asian's hardcore obsession with this game.
They are very emotional about it just like a lot of Americans are with Warcraft, EQ franchise.

Funny stuff looking through the old posts. Back in 2004 people were still bitching about EA and loving WoW.
