You actually play the role of three characters in an actual story line. The game it self is like an action RPG. It's sort of like those old arcade ninja turtle action games, only you play with other people and get better equipment and levels along the way. =P
Yes, unfortunatly you cannot change the looks of your character. At the character selectionscreen you select either a warrior, mage or healer and you can give it a name of your choice. The only changes in looks are armorbased, so as you progress in the game you get more armor and so more ways to customise your looks.
As one of the above posters said, the characters you can choose are the three characters from the mainstoryline, which is being told "cartoonstyle" at the beginning of a stage, during the stage (when you get goals which you need to complete the stage) and at the end of a stage. I think this is very nicely done.

you cant customize your face. you can change ur look by wearing other armor tho.
