As I write this I have the free 14 day-trial downloading in the background. Chances are regardless of the negatives that may be going on in this game, I'm gonna be resubscribing. DAoC was the second online game I ever played (after Age of Empires) and my first MMORPG. I got the game for my birthday back in 02' or around there. Its easily among my favorite games of all time, and I'm afraid I'll never again get the feeling I had the first week I played this game. I was absolutely taken with it and it led me down into that dark pit known as online gaming =(. I still remember reading the back box of the game waiting for it too install, dreaming up how this "RvR would work" and possibly wondering what class I would choose. I remember specifically reading the Shadowblade description about scaling castle walls and thinking how awesome it would be to do that. I finally got it up and running and chose a Elf Ranger (who would have thought?) and going into battle against a giant worm-slug thing in Mag Mell.
From that point on I've never been quite the same. I played the game for some three months or so before my computer (which simply wasnt built for gaming, I mean this thing was ancient it would shut down because of overheating after a few hours play) simply gave up trying to run the game. I've come back to the game since that point in many stints and fling's making and leveling various characters in all the realms to 50. The last time was when Gareth came out, where I played a Blademaster, for some 2 or 3 months. I've moved on to smaller and lesser things since then, and I've finally got that craving returning, so now I'm looking for some news on the current state of the game. I'm sorry I know this has been askings bajillions of times, but I'd like to hear.
I left shortly before Darkness Rising came out, and know nothing of what happened after that point. I'm pretty well versed in everything before that point, and understand most of the old classes and the mechanics of the game. I'm planning on starting anew on the classic cluster, and leveling up to the big time. I'd like to hear about any changes since catacombs has come out. Are people still playing in the lower levels? One of my favorite things in DAoC was the social aspect, grouping up with strangers to do great deeds and level, which sometimes would end up growing into friendships or leading to guilds. I have a lot of fond memories, and still remember many of the people I played with. How difficult will it be to level up nowadays, is it still mostly task dungeons, and instances in the catacombs place? Are the battlegrounds still active?
How is RvR, dominated by 8 man or are zergs and keep taking still going on? (I Remember duing the classic servers a new landmass in NF was added between the three realms.) Theirs a million more questions I have I just cant think of, but I'd appreciate very much just how the game has changed since Darkness Risings introduction. Thanks in advance, if you can manage this wall of text.

DR added "champion quests" which starts at level 30. These have some good rewards with them and a good storyline. The first part can be done solo, but the later parts require a group. You now get "Champion levels" which are easy to get because once you are level 50 anything that gives XP will give CLXP. You get to "sublcass" which means you get to pick up very minor spells from another base class. For example a tank could pick up a minor heal spell.
Horses were added with DR. You can get an ugly slow horse without having to have DR. If you want a faster pretty horse you need to have DR.
LotM added one race/class. It raised the Champion Level from 5 to 10 and added some more horses/quests. It also added a new RvR dungeon. There are now mino-relics which you can take out of the dungeon and use in RvR. These provide different benefits for each one. They must stay in NF and they make you a target because people can see you on the map. It also added a new type og gem slot for a stone that drops in the Lab. These provide minor bonuses and you have to be a certain Champion level to use them.
They just redid the keeps in NF. They added some changes to siegecraft as well. For example you can construct siege towers to be able to scale a wall.
People still do TD on the classic server, if it is to the extent as before I do not know. There is a bonus for XP in the original game zones that makes it so that not doing a TD is best for XP. However, if you have a good 8 man group a TD will provides the best bonus. On the other clusters no one really does TD because of the boredom and slower XP.
Grouping at low levels is the same to slightly worse than when you left.
They have made changes to many classes.
In place of expnasions they are offering free content every 4-6 months in terms of a storyline campaign. The first one just ended that involved the dragons attacking the world. Cities were destroyed and other cities were being invaded. There were some nice rewards with these quests and at least towards the end of the campaigns many people were doing the quests. A new one is about to begin.
ToA has been nerfed to hell. Everything can be done by a group of less. You no longer need to wait for an artifact to drop all you need is the encounter. Scrolls drop easily. You can purchase ToA credits in exhange for bounty points.
And clusters now have all of the zones shared except for housing. This makes each cluster less confusing and makes it feel like it is just one server now.
That's a pretty cool change....glad to see they did that....

I stopped playing in early June. Was playing on the classic cluster. Mythic upped the exp gained to 150% in all the mainland areas such as the standard zones and SI. They upped exp in any PVP zone to 200%. This includes Darkness Falls, the new baby DF for levels 1-5 and 6-10 as well as all the battlegrounds and rvr zones.
Leveling nowadays I found pretty easy and enjoyable simply due to the fact that there are bg's starting at lvl 1. I'd just run in there and start killing mobs for the 200% exp, then as soon as I see an enemy realm I just off them and get another huge chunk of exp. 1-5 can be done in about 5-10 minutes, 15 in about 30 minutes given the optimal pvp opponents. Like someone above me said, they overhauled the rvr keeps, bridges and towers in the last patch. It should add a few new ways of taking keeps and that kind of stuff...
Saddly, I no longer play the game. I quit due to lack of interest on my part mostly because I feel the community is no longer what it was when I started a long time ago and thus doesen't compel me to play but other then that, it's relatively still a good game.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
I'll have to say that DAoC is the only game that has changed for the better since the game has released. The most recent patch re-vamped NF and the BG's and they are look amazing.
TOA is a ton easier then when that hellish expansion came out and it's alot of fun killing the effrits that drop ML boss mob ROG drops. MLs (did ML1 and 2 is a few hours with a FG )can be done sometimes with as little as a FG and don't take near as long as they use to.
I've left DAoC off and on, but not for the lack of things to do, but from just burning out from being on so much. So, I'd step away to take a break and hopefully find that new game that would replace DAoC, haven't found it yet and I've tried every new MMO that's come out since and nothing touches DAoC in my opinion.
Come back and take in the new Camelot, I bet you'll like it.
Is the majority of PvP located around level 25 and everyone is twinked with a buffbot standing right behind 'em? If so, I'd rather not bother with that nonsense again. I loved DAoC so much, me and my friends had so many awesome epic moments. There were so many battles that we still remember it felt like historic some of those battles. Encountering different types of enemies you couldn't speak to but dealt with peacefully at times while wandering and other times tracking down an enemy that got you earlier through the woods of Midgard. When I PvP'd a lot I was a scout (best archer because of the cloaked sniper shot crap and the shield stun) but Midgard had the most interesting classes in my opinion. Spears and wolves man, what could be better (nothing!). I played a long time ago and didn't get very high level because after the 25 BG ended, PvP went with it and I wasn't happy about that.
There are those who have bots and are twinked out. Not going to lie to you about that. There are those who have the uber elite gank sqaud and will frustrate you beyond all means.
BUT, these guys got to where they are by starting at level 1 and got to 50. Leveling in DAoC nowdays is alot different from a few months ago. I just started new toons on Mid and already have 3 of them to lvl 50. There are so many new easy quests, task dungeons and places to farm it's crazy.
All you have to do is find the right set of friends or a guild and your good to go. It's not that hard to find a good group of players so get out there and have some fun.
DAOC Is still one of the best games out there. UNfortnuatly, its just not one of the newest. However, if you think about all the anticipation and hype for Mythic's next game, its a good reflection as to how well the first one was.
Very Cool Game, then and now.

Age doesn't bother me. The graphics are plenty good. I just fear trying to dive into such an aged MMO because of the level of experience of most players. They won't want to deal with stupid basic noob questions to help you get up to speed. Or.. am I wrong? I played DAoC back when it first came out but haven't really since.
don't be concerned with noob questions.
the /advice option goes realm wide and you'd be amazed at how many people respond to them.
I thought in the last update they did away with the /advice or changed it to a petition system, etc.?
The adviser system was removed a couple of patches ago and it was replaced with an advice channel since no one was using the old system. However, when submitting a bug report, it still had "advice" listed as one of the options you could submit your bug as. This should no longer have been there and that was removed with the last patch.
I agree, dont be concerned about noob questions.
Politeness goes along way, and i found the community to be quite helpful when creating a new toon/class for the 1st time. While on my main or once created my new toon i often did a /who <class name> and ask a high lvl of that specific class, spec questions and so forth...or later in lvls ask about what artifacts (if on toa server) /items etc would be good for my certain class.... i found most ppl would take the time to help out if they weren't too busy.
Just a thought... but of course there is the advice channel as mentioned above if you would prefer that option.
The best idea for lvl'ing is to find out where the xp bonuses are and head out and grind...getting to lvl 50 can be done quite quickly these days. (Of course you can do quests but i preffer to grind on mobs, so i'll leave that for someone else to comment on).
I often jump back in to see how things are going w/ DAoC (usually after a new patch) and consider returning.... if my guildmates were still playing chances are i would come back. Its only downfall is the lack of people playing for me, but theres always the option of changing guilds...
This i just my opinion, but of all the mmo's ive played DAoC is still one of the better.... if not best, that have appealed to my style of gameplay and taste as a mmorpg'er, and im still looking for a game that can give me the same thrill i got from DAoC. I just cant go past the pvp system... none better imho.

Aye!!! Still love this game. And the community is still very helpful. If you wanna come play just look me up if ya like albs If not just get on run around for a while check the Camelot Herald to see what Guilds are active. Join a guild have some fun. I have some chars that run around in epic gear which is free from doing quest and they do great in RvR. So you don't need to have the most UBER gear to have fun. Look me up on Isuelt Albion / Gamdriel or just do a /who Brocolation Guard and say hi. If yer new i'll drop some gold on ya to get ya started
im looking at the website now and thinking of playing. only question i have is how do you move? is it based around wasd since its older or can u make it mouse driven ? Mxo put me off because i could not get used to the mouse in 3rd person. thanx in advance
If noob question is not offensive, I need a bit of help with very noob thing.
I started DAoC 2 days ago, only spent 7 hours so far and only lvl 6. Yes I am very slow, I dunno how to lvl fast. I got lost in tutorial, lost inside Camelot city, and got lost when someone showed me to the frontier and logged off. I dunno how to get back to the Camelot (I found it eventually by clicking on everything I see).
I have been reading a lot on builds, and came across a lot of things I never know heads from tails. Dragon-armor, dragon-loot, Bow40+shield37+whatever, epic, ML, so many terms I only recently realise these are not place names. For a while I thought ML is a dungeon.
Are there some "overall" guides on what these are, and up-to-date. I printed a guide off the web and go home to work along the advice loyally, only to find that the skills it mentioned at lvl 5 were not available to me when I picked the class. Then I go back to the web to find out that the guide is written in 2003. Maybe its correct, maybe I got the wrong class, I really feel at a loss.
/Advice is great, but asking over the channel continuously will make me look like a troll. A better solution will be some relatively comprehensive guide. The message boards are good but they are legible to the lvl 50s. Me with no idea on how to finish the tutorial (for 2 hours) will find the message board threads written in Martian language.
1. Read the DAOC FAQ up top.
2. /map will pull up your map
3. Albion and Midgard have larger more confusing capital cites. Try rolling a toon in Hib. People do learn their way around in Mid/Alb, but before there were maps I found Hib to be so much easier to get around.
4. After you do the tutorial do not bother with any of the quests in the starter zones. Instead go in the capital city and then go into the catacombs zone to do those quests.
5. You can leave the starter guild and then flag yourself as looking for a guild. Joining a guild should help you out a lot.
6. Not sure there are really any good guides, but these might help you:

DAoc is awesome , my 2nd favorite mmorpg by far. I still think EQ1 is the best pve game and Daoc best pvp game. Try EQ1 if you like Pve/adventure tradeskills. daoc if you love pvp.
