Just how far should a publisher go to stay true to the license?. This discussion makes me wonder how female characters will work in Age of Conan. The books are the second-most sexist fantasy I've read, only beaten by the Gor books
All throughout history males have been the dominant force in each culture. Howard wrote hyboria to mimic our history in a way while still fabricating a fantasy world of his own. In his eyes he was sortof filling in the gaps in our history where we have insufficient historical facts. Nevertheless, only until recently in this century, women have been seen as objects for the most part. Even today sexism bleeds through everywhere we go. In my opinion it is only part of human nature, which is one of the main undertones in howards writing; the fact that barbarism is the most natural state of human beings and every civilization was a barbaric tribe warring against another at some point in its heritage.
I think staying true to this is crucial for the lore and setting of Conan. Is it sexist? Why yes it is. However it is necessary to the story and historically accurate.
As for how this will play out in Age of conan, we can only wait and see.
Well all i know is that in every single one of the Conan short stories written by howard there is a naked or scantily clad woman in it. So just as long as people dont overdo it, i like the idea of toplessness because it sticks to the lore. However im sure people will over do it and create a female guild that requires no top or something ridiculous and then name themselves something stupid. That will destroy the conan "feel" for me.
I don't think creating a guild with all women would be horrible. I've read (not Conan lore but elsewhere) about tibes of scantily clad Amazon women wreaking havoc. I don't see why this should destroy the conan feel for you. It all really depends how it was done. Naming them something stupid is another issue. Hopefully GMs wouldn't allow L33T and stupid names to exist. You would think since this is an "adult" game that everyone should be mature... but I've definetely seen 30 years old with the mentality of a 16 year old.

Well i never said a female only guild would be bad. I was just trying to say that someone could ruin the it by making a mockery of one. Yes it really all depends how its done.

-snip lots of big pics-
I can only approve of such a dresscode, along with the bad-porn-like dialogue. I can only hope that the NPC's have a similar way of "convincing" players to sheathe their twohanders in the NPC's dirty bits.
That would even make me consider getting the german translation
Seriously though, it's about time we got something like this. Blood, guts and wenches! Finally we can *really* spend our reward on ale and whores- THAT's roleplaying!
ALE AND WHORES GALORE!
Now playing: City of Heroes/Villains, Age of Conan
