The movie license has nothing to do with turbines license. As a matter of fact turbine is restricted from using anything from the movies.
So much so that they use images as stated above, and such from the movies. Including the Eye of Sauron, the nazjul look and the Witch king of Angmar all look just as they did in the movies. As you said above however as a matter of fact Turbine is restriced from useing anything in the movies. I guess you werent there when the license was bought after all, and agreement signed.

I never claimed to be there. Nice of you to think i think so highly of myself. I was going off of what the devs said about not being able to use anything from the movies. And the nazguls and wich king look the way the do in the art from the artist who originally drew pictures based on middle earth. The movies used these drawings just as turbine did. That is why there are such similarities. So naturally since both the game and the movie used this previous art as a reference point there would be similarities between the two. That does not meed that turbine used the movies as inspiration.

Tell me what other look would the nazgul have. They are wraiths draped in black robes. They can only look one way. The way the do in the game and movies. I conceded that the eye of sauron was probably influenced more by the movies since there was no real art of it. Along those lines show me were the eye is used in the game. The only time i have seen it is in  the opening movie trailer for the game. That is not in the game. Anyway i still stand by the fact that the movies are not the huge influence on the game that is thought to be.

As i stated before i know that it has some influence on the game wich is natrural. Being human nature to draw upon that wich we know and the movies are well known.

Well the Eye of Sauron does show up in place of your compass/mini-map when you're in an encounter with one of the main "villains" (e.g. the nazgul). However the description of the eye as used in the game and in the movie can be traced back to the books... And I believe it's what's flashed on the screen very quickly when something gives your character dread - like when you approach Frodo/the ring in Rivendell, or some of the mobs in the Barrow Downs, etc.

    Specifically, in this sentence:

"The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing."

That's how Frodo sees it in the mirror Galadriel has him look into, as described in the book.

Soo... basically, similar to the Nazgul, both the movie and the game appear to have gotten its look from the same source.

I think the over-arching theme here is this:

Both the movie and the game are derived from the books. Thus, there are going to be similarities. One appearing the same as in the other is not "proof" of anything more than that.

As for the similarities in appearance between movie characters and in the cinematics.. I'm sorry but Gandalf does not look like Ian McKellan, the Hobbit does not remind me at all of Elijah Wood. In-game, they look *nothing* alike. Aside from the brown hair, Aragorn looks nothing like Viggo Mortensen. Elrond looks nothing like Hugo Weaving. Bilbo looks nothing like Ian Holm. Boromir looks nothing like Sean Bean, and so forth.

I am finding it more and more entertaining how some people are so driven to discredit this game and/or Turbine in any way they can. There's some serious straw grasping going on in this thread alone.

Nice catch on the eye of sauron. It has been awhile since i read the books and i wasn unable to recall the part were the eye was talked about. You are right the movies used the same base source the game did so naturally there will be similarities. That is all. Cause they both come from the same source. Also due to our culture we live in movies and other entertainment have a influence on things. I admit the movies will be in the minds of the devs that is natural. But rivendell in the game looks nothing like the movie nor does weathertop or bree. The shire is probably the only place that can be close in game to how it looks in the movies.

If you think in any way I'm trying to discredit Turbine or this game, you are so damn wrong it's not even funny. Not when I think Turbine has created one of the greatest MMOs in existence. It doesn't bother me whether they derived from the books or movies or not; it's fantastic in its own right regardless.

And now it seems to be your turn to sit high on that pedestal and watch the gladiators duke it out for their petty lives from your luxury throne. Find it amusing? LIke you said before: get over yourself. Being more subtle doesn't make it any better mate.

I didn't have to go to Peter Jackson's biography to show you the mistake he made. It's right there on Wikipedia mate, if you looked further down the sentence you quoted, you would have seen:

"In the book, there are many other instances where Sauron is referred to as the "Red Eye" - which have led some, such as filmmaker Peter Jackson, to assume that it was his physical form. However, a closer reading shows that the "Eye" was a metaphysical reflection of his piercing will."

If we all read the books before Jackson's movies I'm sure we all thought of him alot in his physical form as well. That's why I would credit Tolkien for that 'badass antagonist' look seemingly given to every amateur or professional high fantasy story.

However, I'll admit that doesn't prove why Turbine has used the Eye of Sauron moreso than his physical form. But I would've expected them to use both images (both physical and the Eye) if they weren't under the influence of the films. It seems they chose one all-purpose image for their marketing. Curious, indeed.

But once again, you guys are readily thinking I believe the movies are the genesis of all that's LOTRO. That's just stupid. The style of the movies were influenced by the other movies before it, as well as the art by Alan Lee and John Howe (and many other lesser artists), which were in turn inspired by the original novels. The film trilogy then, is nothing more than a big melting pot of everything that inspired it. But it's had the most impact on our current generation, and perhaps the second greatest impact of all that's LOTR for all time (the first being the books). It's hard not to believe they had taken a leaf out of what New Line had produced.

But then again, if you guys want to believe Michael Jackson has no influence on today's hip hop generation, skip him and instead credit it to Stevie Wonder and James Brown, I have no control over it. But when the facts are there, it just seems absurd.

Ummm... Wow, way to make a wild assumption and then fly off the handle about it. Pullin' out the ol' guillotine before the verdict's even been read.

Did I name you specifically? No. Are you the only person in this thread debating this? No.

I don't put myself on any throne or high-horse. I made an observation. Nothing more. If you feel it hit home in some way, and took it personally, well.. nothing I can do about how you interpret what I say.

That said, if you took what I said as aimed directly at you... well... again, get over yourself :-)

As for the eye being the metaphysical reflection, and so on... Well, it's described in there nonetheless and is available as a resource to draw from, is it not? As a viewer, I certainly find the vision of that eye alot more menacing and powerful than I would a big dude in an armor suit . As it stands, the game is quite consistent with the "metaphyiscal" manifestation of it as described in the book, as you only see it when Sauron's "presence" is strongly felt and it effects your character. It's not like there's a flaming red/yellow eye hopping around Middle Earth in LoTRO.

Could you get anymore predictable mate? Really, could you?

We can talk about semantics all day mate. We can argue it so much and so forth it will probably get to the point where you will weasel me out of the original target you were aiming for. Yeah -- you're not the first one to have said it. Not the first one at all.

Considering I've made the wildest statements from page one which has seemingly continued to this very page, yeah, I can make a pretty damn good assumption it's mostly targeted towards me. Only one other person that's done anything as outrageous as I have, and even so, Raven's remained largely ambigous (or confusing, I'm not sure).

No one has tried to discredit Turbine in this thread, not even I. But apparently someone has according to you. I really want to know who's outright tried to diss this developer.

And should I get over myself? Nah... don't think so. Considering I know Peter Jackson (who is not as great as makes him out to be persona-wise), working on a tv series that's he damn looking forward to, working with makeup artists from King Kong, working with the fight choreographer from the Lord of the Rings, working with an actor I shall not name anytime soon from the Matrix movies (You know him). as well as being bombarded with requests to make music videos for artists(which I refuse to because NZ made music suck, and the videos are budget), I won't be getting over myself anytime soon. Yep, I'm extremely arrogant .

I'll probably get a lot of crap too, despite what I do in the future, so I better get use to it. You can be my first .

As for the Eye, I alluded to that. For all we know the physical manifestation of Sauron is in Mordor, which we will see in Book 666.

As for caffeine, I don't drink coffee or coke, despite working in the film industry. Rots your teeth. I get by on the joy and luff for what i do

I have no prejudice against you personally mate. You're probably a nice guy that's met a bastard on the internet that needs a beating

Or... you could just be a little kid in your mom's basement that likes to talk big.   Now, which one am I going to go with?  It's a real toss-up.  Little spoiled brat... or movie mogul that's on the cusp of another mega-hit... hmm...

See that's the thing about posting on an internet forum.  There is absolutely zero proof that you can offer that will prove who you say you are.  So... most of us have learned that it does no good to brag about your social standing, net worth, or personal friends... because none of it can be proven.  So, since none of it can be proven, the only ones who usually bring it up are those that think it actually means something to the rest of us.

Heh, it doesn't.  Sorry to burst your bubble.

Ok you know what, you got me.

I'm living in my mother's basement, and all I do is stuff like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q98xo5HsdCM -- All five parts are online if you so wish to view the whole thing.

    Or this:

In all honesty gentlemen, I really don't care what you think. I know who I am, and I know where I'm at, and it doesn't matter what other people think. I'm not stupid enough to think that my previous reply would make people believe anything. In fact, it would make me look like a stupid little brat. But I'll stress again: I don't care, because I know who I am, and I know where I'm at.

If you saw the context of which it was posted, it was purely a pisstake reply. And now you've gone all serious with it.

Yeah, out of the thousands of idiots on forums the world over, there's just got to be one that's the real deal.

Ah well. Liquid47, remember my alias. You'll hear it on the radio or see it on E! Channel sometime. Only to smite the nonbelievers everywhere

Heh, I can post links to youtube as well if you like... still doesn't alter the fact that anyone can claim to be anyone.

And, let's just suppose that you are really who you say you are... so what?  Are we supposed to be all proud of you?  Heh, just the opposite for me.  All the more reason you should act your age and try and be a somewhat decent member of society.

In the end it still boils down to this: On an internet forum you've got to earn respect... you're not there yet.

As I said dude, I really don't care if you don't believe me. Likewise, the same goes with you. Although may I just say out of the hundreds of millions of Youtube videos I could have chosen right there and then, I chose a NZ production, with NZ accents (or NZers trying to do other accents ) and everything. Extremely coincidental considering I'm a NZer....

Okay, so what should I do if someone is subtly trying to impose their superiority and intellect over you (which you are doing as well. Yeah you are merely stating what's happening, you might retort, but the manner in which you do so is imposing. I would do the same if I was talking to someone that's acting like me right now). Should I just do the same and try to flex my superiority back with a hint of subtlety? Is it any more worse to use blatant sarcasm, that's perhaps rooted in truth to get across a message?

And I thought I was acting my age. I'm 17 years old, and I'm forever called a kid. Yeah... 17, and you probably assumed I was 30 with those two projects I showed under my belt. So I got less than a year to change my attitude and become an "adult", or perhaps four years for other cultures. I like to think I'm mature, as if you check my post history, very rarely do I post like this. Just seems I've been built up to do it this way here. Kinda hoping this thread would die though. Also, if I was acting purely like this in the industry I'm working in, I'd get no job whatsoever. The only reason I'm in the industry at such a young age is that everyone thought I was at least 21.

And um...... who says I want to earn respect on an internet forum?..........

Yeah thanks, but no thanks. I don't even command respect on a bloody film set so why should I do it here?

I'm no better than any of you. In fact, I'm probably worse. As I said, I'm only young. You guys have way more experience than me.

Anyway, I'm gonna go back to mum's basement and go to sleep.

LOL!  For someone who doesn't "care" what we think you've given us quite the story of your "so-called" life there.  Heck, if I believed half of what you've written it would be more information than most people give on a job interview.

I guess a typical response from someone who "doesn't care" would be:  " Yeah, whatever dude"  But yeah, glad to see you "don't care" so much.

"Yeah, whatever dude" is for hack directors and extras who also run coffee whilst on set lol. Check the IMDb Pro boards. 14 day trial pass if you don't have one. Omg that was so bang on that was hilarious. Damn!

    Anyway,

It was just one paragraph in my previous post where I said anything significant about what I do. Perhaps a few lines more. Other than that you totally disregarded the rest of my post, including something relevant to this thread.

In regards to the job interview remark, I would not know how much to give really; I haven't been to those regular ones in a long time. In any case, looking at what advice is offered on the internet, not only have I given next to nothing, they probably wouldn't accept me because I'm acting like an arrogant prick.

Second, don't talk about "us" like the rest of the posters care. Only you seem to have the need to provoke my personal life to the spotlight.

Yes, your epeen is bigger than mine. You got mass respect from me and everyone else. Word.

The leprechauns in the fairytale world I live in ask that I linger no more.

Now have your last quip and be done with it.

From what the developers have said in the past they will more than likely stick with the books. The books really cover more than the movie did and if they were to use  both some things just wouldn't make sense in the stories. Still, they have a ton of Middle-earth to work with still. A lot of people don't know just how much of it there really was. :)
