The fact that someone would pay money for a character is a symptom of a serious probelm. The games aren't fun until you reach the end and gear has more to do with player success than decision making and skill. The fact that this dood spent $9,700 on a toon proves his ability to make decisions tis totally whacked!!

I just don't know what to say about this.
Other than I'm glad I don't play the game anymore.
But it's not as bad as the guy that sold himself to be eaten alive to someone on ebay.
If you were Bill Gates would you care about spending $9700 on a toon?
This surprises you? Its been going on since Eq1 , today a bot company wil pay anywhere from 200. to 10k an account. In Lineage 2 , on the gustin server they bought out half of a guild for control of a castle long enough to raise taxes and such..
a lawyer friend over at Eq2 builds crafters to sell on the exchange server. Last i heard he was making 2k extra a month after taxes and loses. The guild i use to belong to in Eq2 sellings almost 100 million a week in gold for the exchange server.
Right now you can find people who will buy beta accounts for 12k .. An archlord closed beta account a while back was going for 200.00 , Eve Online I sold my beta account for 75.00 (suck ass game too.)
FF XI bots will take you on BCNM for 400,00 until you get the drop you want.
Even a crackhead would know this was not a good deal...its a rogue!

Except that he has $9,700 dollars to waste. He must make better decision than me, because I wish I had that kinda money to waste.
That is that MMO games are boring grindfest "jobs" until you reach the end game and have the best equipment. Too many MMO games currently aren't much fun in the actual journey. They are all about the end. Which is the exact opposite of Single Player RPGs, which are entirely about the journey through the game. I hope that companies can overcome this. Either through the usage of fun game dynamics like WAR's constant strife and PVP centric game or through traditional single player rpg mentality with strong quests like Bioware says they will be doing.
The reason that someone would pay 9700 dollars for an account and the reason that there is a multimillion dollar industry in Gold/account/powerleveling sales is because the basic design of these games is flawed. When there is an endgame that is super fun then no one is going to want to just enjoy the ride there. The vast majority of players do not enjoy the current design of MMO games. This is proven through the rampant usage of bot programs, powerleveling, and gold purchases. There wouldn't be a multimillion dollar industry selling these services if they were fun to aquire in the first place.
So in reality the game developers are at fault. Because if the game was fun to play throughout the whole game and not just a job to get to the end, then even people like Bill Gates would play instead of buying a character.

Actually the journey in WoW is a lot of fun for many and the endgame is really boring. It's the people who don't enjoy the journey that are wasting their money. The thing is if you enjoy the endgame there are a lot of games around where you don't have to level up and get equipment where you can PvP. They just aren't pay to play games.
I dont know whats more sad the fact that some guy spent all that time getting all that gear in the first place, or the guy who goes and wastes so much money on a bloody game character.
Shows Blizzard doesnt give a shit about thier own rules though, that account should be banned all the character details etc are there with proof, and its against their terms of use, so back up your rules or don't have them in the first place and they wonder why they have so many cheaters in that game when people admit to cheating and they do nothing about it.
Not everyone is worried about whether it feels right to have "worked hard" to earn their stuff. (I always thought it was funny when people say that they worked hard for their characters and stuff. It is a game after all why should it be work?) Most people want to play a GAME to have FUN. WORKING isn't fun when it is in your game. The first company that can provide a fun environment without the work will have a huge hit on their hands. The market is ripe with new MMO blood and the reigning game is going on 3 years old. This is the time to strike with a totally fun game that will hit the market and become huge.

Hell, if i wanted a t6 rogue i'd rather pay a visit to the test realms...sure he DW's legendar weps but it's still not his original char
What we are seeing here is somewhat of a moral issue. I would debate anyone that basically is blind to this and says, well anyone has a right to decide how to spend their money. Well, let me ask those that feel this way, why don't you ask a devoloper/designer of the games in question whether playing the game is a right or a privelege to begin with.
This kind of story really sickens me.

okay first of all why would u pay that much for anything in gaming, i mean seriously u could buy about 3-4 uber computers with that money, and why would u buy out a completely leveled character, i mean that totally takes away from the purpose of the game. i mean really all the fun lies within building ur character, and the endgame is alright but not as fun as building ur own character to use in the endgame instances and PvP and what not, if u wanna play a PvP game minimal leveling try gild wars(yuck)
May the force be with you
I don't know which is funnier, the price... or because of the publicity the account has already been banned...

This type of thing has been going on a looong time in EQI especially. I was once offered a large sum for a toon when she was only Elementaly equipped.
Personally I couldn't see selling a character that i invested sooo much time and effort into. I've also heard people argue why shouldn't they get paid for the time and dedication. My real problem with sold toons is the false advertising aspect. When you invite a Uber equipped character to you're group you also expect someone highly skilled at the helm.
However I've found out more than once that's not always the case.

HAHAHAHA, someone paid 10k to get a character in the most boring endgame ever. I bet he's tearing his hair out. He'll log in, realize there is nothing to do, and log out.

sad really.
what will the new owner do now? such a waste of money.
You have nothing left to get in the current game, you'd have to find 24 other players just as good on your server that were at Black Temple/Mt. Hyjal in order to actually do the raid. You can't solo it.
He'd probably suck at PVP because all that great PVE gear has zero Resilience and low HP so it's really bad for PVP.
So he has to wait until the next expansion comes out, but all the gear will be made obsolete when that happens so he just completely and totally wasted 9,000 euro
hahhahahhahahahahahhahahhahahha
The best part about all this is the guy will need to replace all his great gear with green trash drops as soon as the Lich King is released. GG Blizzard!
Sad part is, now that the name of the guy is public, his account will most likely get banned....

I think there are a few MMO players who just can't stand the journey, unlike the majority, and will pay to avoid the journey to get to what they like, which is the endgame.
I don't think that designers or developers can afford to cater to this relatively small group of people at the expense of the rest of their playerbase, who have no problem with the journey itself.
Besides, why pay a hefty sum for an endgame toon when all you're going to do is embarass yourself in the raid when it's obvious you haven't learned to play the toon through the journey?
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I agree to an extent, but to counter point it's obvious lots of people do have fun during the leveling process. Personally I love the leveling process and small group content of MMOs. That is my favorite part of the games. I always quit at endgame when it becomes about raiding and PvP only. Some people love that stuff. Unfortunately you can't satisfy everyone. There are different parts of the game and if you don't like one part you either grind through it unhappily or quit. There are plenty of games out there that offer what endgame content MMOs offer and there are also lots of games that offer the leveling process. It's my opinion that raiding and PvP should never have been added to endgames of MMO. WoW was fun before the it became a raiding endgame. EQ was also fun before it starting adding in raiding. I guess thats why gold farming will always exist. There is a vast contrast in play style and many people want many different things.
What would be interesting is if we knew how many hours /played this sold character had. Then we could easily calculate how much money he made per hour playing it.
I would assume this rogue had totally amazing gear and was maxed out in pretty much every way, else $9700 is even more excessive than it already sounds (it already sounds hoaxed, to be honest). How many hours would that take? 2400 hours (100 days)? If so, he made around $4/hr just playing WoW, less his subscription fee and box fees.
At any rate, I cannot imagine it working out to less than $2/hr (4800 hours or 200 days, which is a full 20% of the time the game has been released for), which is not bad considering he ended up getting paid for (hopefully) having fun.
Now who wants to bet the guy who bought it burns out within a month and realizes having a maxed char is less fun than making one? I'd laugh really hard if he tries to sell it and cannot even get $1000.
First I want to say that I don't advocate the buying and selling of accounts or items within online games. That being said, if a person has the money to spend who are we to say how they should or shouldn't spend it, personally I'd love to have $9700 laying around that I could just waste it on something like this. I have freinds that spend more than this on their hobbies which bring in nothing in return other than the enjoyment they get from participating.
For some video gaming is just such a hobby, spending thousands on electronic equipment to get the most cutting edge computer possible to have that boost in performance. Most of us know that the risks involved in making a purchase like this don't equate and I'm sure this individual is looking for another account as we speak that isn't as flashy that he can get away with it this time. I still don't think its a smart move but I actually have to balance my checkbook each month.
